"Mary's Boy Child" is recorded on "To Wish You A Merry Christmas" by Harry Belafonte (1962 RCA, I'm pretty sure it has been reissued on CD). I do not have the lyrics at hand, but will try to transcribe them if no one else comes up with them.

The lyrics to Stille Nacht are below.

rich r

Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht
Melodie - Franz Xaver Gruber, 1818
Joseph Mohr, 1816

Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht!
Alles schläft, einsam wacht
Nur das traute hochheilige paar.
Holder Knabe im lockigen Haar,
: Schlaf in himmlischer Ruh! :

2. Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht!
Hirten erst kundgemacht
Durch der Engel Halleluja,
Tönt es laut von fern und nah:
: Christ, der Retter ist da! :

3. Stille Nacht, Heilige Nacht!
Gottes Sohn, oh, wie lacht
Lieb' aus deinem göttlichen Mund,
Da uns schlägt die rettende Stund,
: Christ, in deiner Geburt! :

4. Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht!
Die der Welt Heil gebracht
Aus des Himmels goldenen Höh'n
Uns der Gnade Fülle läßt seh'n:
: Jesus in Menschengestalt. :

5. Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht!
Wo sich heut alle Macht
Jener Liebe huldvoll ergoß,
Die uns arme Menschen umschloß:
: Jesus, der Heiland der Welt. :

6. Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht!
Lange schon uns bedacht,
Als der Herr, vom Zorne befreit,
In der Väter urgrauen Zeit
: Aller Welt Schonung verhieß. :
^^

A nice "English Friendly" site with German Folksongs may be found at: http://ingeb.org/home.html

This link will take you to their "Stille Nacht" with a parallel, literal translation.

Stille Nacht

Back to "Stille Nacht" for a sec. Due to my lack of knowledge of German, I'd always misheard the first line as:

"Stille Nacht, Heineken Nacht"

...and wondered what beer had to do with the first Christmas (maybe the innkeeper was serving it?).

That's the folk process for ya! Anyway, thanks, Mudcat, for clearing that up for me!!

Hey, Sharon, that's probably an appropriate version of the line for the way some folks celebrate Christmas!

Ya gotta add that to one of the "mondegreen" threads. LOL
