I finally heard from my friend in Richmond, Virginia,
whom I had asked (e-mail) about the outcome of that storm.

They had freezing rain that fell for a long time, which froze ...
they are measuring the ice in inches of thickness.
As in, three to four inches of solid ice on a typical driveway.
One gentleman cleared his driveway using a pickaxe, a sledgehammer, and finally a snow shovel, or so I am told.

I think ice storms are the worst.

It's quiet and very very cold in my part of Southern New England.
Farther south it is not so quiet.
A storm is battering the southern maritime states/coasts.
That storm is getting ready to move out to sea.
But it will still kick up winds, which will move north into my area.
Bonechilling cold plus increased winds make it dangerous to be outside.

A catastrophic raw sewerage spill into DC's Potomac River dumped 300 million gallons of poo into DC at the start of the snow. E coli is 12,000 times higher than normal. The problem is just now starting to be addressed because of the cold. Insert joke here.

And think of Max at State College, PA -- he must be in the path of it as well.

The snow we have on the ground ought to stay put for some time now.

New England got a few inches of snow overnight, and it's going to continue snowing today.
It's the dry powdery kind, which is good for clearing and plowing and so on.
Everything looks picture-pretty with the new snow outlining every branch on the bare trees.
The roads are plowed and salted; the parking lots, still getting there.

It's been below freezing for days (and nights) in southern New England.
This coming week it's supposed to get above freezing,
but I will believe that when I see it.
Right now we still have several inches of snow on the ground.
It's been good weather for thermal underwear.
I just went and bought some new pairs of warm socks.

Up to 70 here on New Year's Day. I'll take the dogs for a walk and see who else is home and out in their yards for a quick hello. Next week there is a better chance of rain. We got nothing from all of the weather than hit California, it must have drifted way to the NE.

But it's going to stay cold all week, as in below freezing.
And there's a wind advisory at this moment.

I was misinformed. The snow starts this evening and could last for a while. Then there is to be more snow next week. Could accumulate somewhat.
We didn't have a white Christmas, but we may have a white New Year's Eve
in this part of the Northeast.

SNowing again, and that means, oddly, that things are a little warmer.
Shouldn't be too much snow in this part of New England;
Buffalo, NY, however, always gets clobbered with snow. (I have a friend over there.)

Bushfire season has started

Mention has been made of the flooding in Washington State,
which is a national story at this point, I have heard of it in New England.

Some areas inland in the US have received a foot of snow or more.
My part of New England, close to New York,
escaped with little more than six inches of snow.
Now it is really cold, so the snow will stay for a while.

It's cold enough for snow, and we got snow on Friday night.
Just enough to brush off the windshields, light powdery stuff.
THe cold is to stay with us for a while, and get colder,
so any precip that falls is likely to be snow or ice.
But today is dry and sunny, albeit cold.

Look out for the atmospheric river bomb cyclone whiteout blizzard, followed by the 3rd one hundred year flood in 10 years. Rest assured that climate change is a democrat hoax. Anything else is FEMA's fault or you are of a certain age when the world no longer works for you because all previous agencies and policies no longer exist.

It's nice to look back at the top of the thread and see our friend gnu noting the "selfless sacrifice" of the neighbors to the south. Lets hope the border is currently hardened enough to keep the bad winds from blowing across and causing upset.

Our weather is lovely and last night is the first in which I realized I could use the light blanket with the sheet on my bed, and maybe I don't need the ceiling fan going now. Daytime highs in the low 90s, but for North Texas in September, that is excellent, especially when complemented by nights down to the low 60s.

But the smells in the air are the scent of autumn, of dead leaves.

It didn't fall; it blew sideways. The most recent winter storm was a high-wind event no matter where you were; it was the precipitation that was variable from spot to spot. But now the bone-dry blue sky is back, a fresh layer of snow covers lawns and roofs, and every paved surface that was not treated and cleared in time, is iced over, with or without snow in the ice.

Bee-dubya-ell disclosed on another thread that the naming of winter storms was a marketing ploy by the Weather Channel, or, as original poster Gnu calls them, the Weather Terrorists. That was news to me as well.

In southern New England, the weather is toying with us. One extreme to the other and back. Like sucker punches. The weather is not bad today, but the coldest day of the entire winter season was the day before. So you wear multiple layers and do laundry frequently.
