From: GUEST,mg
Date: 16 Mar 10 - 04:19 PM

I have been thinking a CD collection would be interesting..although I doubt it would be very profitable..but maybe loving hands at home could be done with people submitting songs in good enough sound quality.

1. When the tide is out table is set..outstanding song by Brian R. of BC
2. The oyster shanty on the Robert Bruce thread
3. I have a couple..oystershell road and oysterman..0h yes, crab shakers and one about crabbing on Christmas Eve.
4. Acres of clams.
5. Oyster girl on some threads.
6. Molly Malone.

Probably lots more...lobstering?

The Scottish dance tune "The Cockle Gatherer"

"The Walrus and the Carpenter"

And there was a song by a Mudcatter about the Chinese shellfish gatherers who died at Morecambe, if I remember right.

One night for my tea I fancied luxury
So I went down to ol' Perriwinkle's
Bought myself a pennyworth of winkles
Put them on the table for my wife to see
She came down with seven young kids
and all the family.

They started ...
Pickin' all the big ones out
Pickin' all the big ones out
You should have seen my pennyworth of winkles
All the big ones gone!

In John Foreman's fine version of The Winkle Song [which he attributes to Trad], he got his pennyworth of winkles at "Mother McShrinkles's". It is on his fine old vinyl LP "The 'Ouses In Between" (Reality Records, Watford; RY 1004; 1966).

{Great Music-Hall record ~~ best version ever heard of The 4-Horse Sharrybang. Don't know if ever re-recorded or where you could get a copy. Don't make an offer for mine: not for sale at any price!}

1. "Billy the Squid," by Tom Chapin and John Forster ("He robbed from the selfish and gave to the shellfish"). Great sing.

2. "The Geoduck Song," as sung by Fred Penner. It's a kind of clam and it's pronounced Gooeyduck and it's a lot of fun to sing.
Dig a duck, dig a duck, dig a gooeyduck
Dig a duck, dig a gooeyduyck, dig a duck a day...

3. "Duck for the Oyster, Dive for the Clam." It's a square dance we used to do in elementary school.

And, of course, any song by Shell Silverstein

Digression with a bit of evolutionary history-

Oysters battled man for supremacy, until, in a period of history, man tasted the oyster!
"The oyster's doom was sealed. His monstrous pretension that he belonged in the van of evolutionary progress was killed forever. He had been tasted and found food. He would never again battle for supremacy. Meekly he yielded to his fate. He is food to this day.

"Parrot Feathers and Probably Arboreal were married after breakfast. On the toes of their first child were ten cunning, diminutive oyster shells. Mankind, up to that time, had sharp toenails like the claws of birds. But the flat, shell-like toenails, the symbols of man's triumph over, and trampling down of the oyster were inherited from the children of this happy couple.

"They persist to this day."

The Revolt of the Oyster, Don Marquis.
Does anyone still read him?

Talking of oysters...

Who on earth discovered that you could get things that look like rocks from the sea bed, prise them open and then suck the snot out? Then decided they were aphrodisiacs? Mind you - the latter makes sense. Why else eat them?

(Only kidding, Oyster lovers!)

Free Walter
by Mike Campbell 1996

Now Walter the King Crab was large as can be,
The king of all King Crab that lived in the sea,
Though his size was enormous, his brain it was not,
Which was probably why he got caught.
OOOOO
Free Walter, Free Walter all the little crabs said,
We love our dear king, though his brain might be dead,
Free Walter, Free Walter they shouted with glee,
Throw him back, throw him back in the sea.
Throw him back in the sea.

Now to Walter's misfortune he happened to be,
Ensnared in a trap in the crab fishery,
When along came a boat and pulled up their crab-pot,
And brought Walter up to the top.
OOOOO
Free Walter, Free Walter all the crewmen did say,
Such a marvelous crab should go back in the bay,
Free Walter, Free Walter they shouted with glee,
Throw him back, throw him back in the sea.
Throw him back in the sea.

Well Captain Sundeen, he was vicious and mean,
He decided that Walter was going to be steamed,
He would eat him for breakfast with orange juice and eggs,
Then munch all day long on his legs.
OOOOO
Free Walter, Free Walter the ship's cook did beg,
Don't smear him with tartar, don't nibble his legs,
Free Walter, Free Walter they shouted with glee,
Throw him back, throw him back in the sea.
Throw him back in the sea.

So the Captain relented and to port they did go,
Where he sold poor old Walter to a circus side show,
They built him a tank so the people could peer,
At the giant sized crab they had here.
OOOOO
Free Walter, Free Walter all the people did say,
If you don't turn him loose we will all go away,
Free Walter, Free Walter they shouted with glee,
Throw him back, throw him back in the sea.
Throw him back in the sea.

So they traded their King Crab for a three headed horse,
And Walter was shipped off to L.A., of course.
Where he starred in a movie of blood, sex and gore,
Made him six million dollars or more.
OOOOO
Free Walter, Free Walter cried the S.P.C.A,
You movie directors can't treat him that way,
Free Walter, Free Walter they shouted with glee,
Throw him back, throw him back in the sea.
Throw him back in the sea.

Then a starlet confessed she was bearing his child,
And lawyers were hired and charges were filed,
And before even one of his weird eyes could blink,
Poor Walter was locked in the clink.
OOOOO
Free Walter, Free Walter the angry mob yelled,
That innocent crab don't belong in that cell,
Free Walter, Free Walter they shouted with glee,
Throw him back, throw him back in the sea.
Throw him back in the sea.

His trial was followed both near and afar,
Followed by the Enquirer and the National Star,
And everyone watched it on cable TV.
To see what Walter's verdict would be.
OOOOO
Free Walter, Free Walter cried a jury of peers,
Then the courtroom went crazy and everyone cheered,
Free Walter, Free Walter they shouted with glee,
Throw him back, throw him back in the sea.
Throw him back in the sea.

He rode to the airport in a black limousine,
His name had been cleared, his record was clean,
And he sipped some champagne as he waved to the crowd,
That cheered him and shouted out loud,
OOOOO
Free Walter, Free Walter all the people did shout,
This crab is our hero, its true, there's no doubt,
Free Walter, Free Walter they shouted with glee,
Throw him back, throw him back in the sea.
Throw him back in the sea.

Then Walter he got on a big DC-10
Which flew him right back to his old home again,
And the Captain and crew were as glad as could be,
To throw Walter back in the sea.
OOOOO
Free Walter, Free Walter sang the whole world with joy,
Every man, every woman, each girl and each boy.
Free Walter, Free Walter they shouted with glee,
Throw him back, throw him back in the sea.
Throw him back in the sea.

I think I put this one verse into a tune-of-John Brown's Body thread:
Mary Ann McCarthy she went out to dig some clams (3x)
But she didn't get a solitary clam.
CHO: All that Mary got was oysters (3x)
But she didn't get a solitary clam (not one).

and a verse to No Bugs on Me that ends
There maybe lobsters on some of you mobsters,
But there aint...

CRABS WALK SIDEWAYS

The Smothers Brothers

Herman met Sally on the beach one night,
The sea was calm and the starfish were bright.
She looked at him and he looked at her it was true love at
first sight.

Well, Herman told his folks about the girl that he found,
They said,
"Herman there must be other girls around. 'Cause crabs walk
sideways,
lobsters walk straight and We won't let you take her for
your mate."

Chorus:

Crabs walk sideways and lobsters welk straight,
And you can't take a crab for your mate.

Well, Herman told his Sally and it broke her heart
She loved that lobster right from the start
He took her in his claws and said "I'll always be yours,
But still, dear, we'll have to part."

Chorus:

She said, "Let me talk to your mom and dad,
I'll show them crabs really aren't that bad."
But they turned her away
"What will the neighbors say."
And they laughted at the funny walk she had.

Chorus:

Then one day on the sandbar what did Herman see,
But his little ol' Sally walking straight as can be.
He said, "Sweetheart now they'll take you in the family!"
She said, "Don't you sweetheart me! Hic!"

Chorus:

I think the best shellfish song was done by Arlo when he made a few changes in an old chantey and changed it to

"The Story of Reuben Clamzo and his Strange Daughter in the Key of A"

You can listen to Arlo do it back in '78 by CLICKING HERE or you can also read it (or read along) by going to Arlonet.

BTW......You'll need a spare 20 minutes or so.......I mean, after all, its Arlo...........................
