Subject: RE: Album artwork From: theleveller Date: 18 Mar 10 - 07:12 AM Some of the best album covers ever were created by Hipgnosis http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hipgnosis Although probably my favourite cover was It's a Beautiful Day http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/It%27s_a_Beautiful_Day_(album) |
Subject: RE: Album artwork From: Will Fly Date: 18 Mar 10 - 06:58 AM I used to have Roger Dean posters hanging on the walls of my first flat! Well, I suppose I was bit more hippy and wild-haired in those days, but they were very distinctive at the time. I love vinyl album art - nothing on a CD can compare, even if they replicate a re-mastered album on CD. As for mp3 downloads... |
Subject: Album artwork From: Dave the Gnome Date: 18 Mar 10 - 06:01 AM BS or not? I'll let the elves decide:-) Talking to one of the daughters last night about Album artwork. It all started when we were in the car and 'Wonderous Stories' by Yes came on. Pretentious prog-rock but I still enjoy it now that I am no longer told it is more artistic than x, y or z:-) Anyhow - Back to the point. She mentioned that the album artwork was done by Rodney Matthews - One of her favourites. I looked it up and as an aside looked up some of my favourite covers - Those by Osibisa. Found that the Osibisa artwork was by Roger Dean and then on further investigation spotted this on the Rodney Matthews site - He was also getting commissions from David Howells at MCA Records in the early 70s, but for black & white caricature and cartoon work for Stackridge rather than the Osibisa (and later Yes) covers that fell to another designer and illustrator from Howells. So I would guess that the 'other designer' was Roger Dean and both of them were doing commisions from David Howells. Now, here is where I made a Mudcat connection. Stackridge were often mentioned in the '70s rock band' thread and then, lo and befold, I found an Album cover, by Matthews, for Tiger Moth , who were featured in the Bracknell Folk Festival links provided in yet another thread. Funny how most things in the music industry seem somehow linked! Mind you, it's the same in computing I suppose. Roger Dean site. Rodney Matthews site. We definitely lost something when we went to CD. Will these wonderful covers disappear altogether when we go wholey digital? Enjoy the art as well as the music:-) Cheers DeG |
