Subject: Lyr Add: SHE NEVER BLAMED HIM, NEVER From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 21 Mar 10 - 06:05 PM Lyr. Add: She Never Blamed Him, Never Music by W. Apmadoc. 1877 1 She never blam'd him, never, But received him when he came; With a welcome kind as ever, And she tried to look the same; But vainly she dissembled, For whenever she tried to smile, A tear unbidden trembled In her blue eye all the while, A tear unbidden trembled In her blue eye all the while. 2 b She knew that she was dying, But she dreaded not her doom; She never thought of sighing, O'er her beauty's blighted bloom; She knew her cheeks were alter'd, And she knew her eyes were dim, But her sweet voice only falter'd When she thought of losing him, But her sweet voice only falter'd When she thought of losing him. 3 She sighed when he caress'd her, For she knew that they must part; She spoke not when he press'd her To his young and panting heart; The banners wav'd around her, And she heard the bugle's sound, They pass'd, and strangers found her, Cold and lifeless, on the ground, They pass'd, and strangers found her, Cold and lifeless, on the ground. Sheet music, Ballad for soprano or tenor, music by W. Apmadoc; 1877, John Church & Co., Cincinnati, and Root & Sons Music Co., Chicago. American Memory. This piece was suggested as the source for Florella and Nellie Cropsy, although verses are not similar; thread 73380: Nellie Cropsy Joe may wish to combine it with that thread. |
Subject: Lyr Add: SHE NEVER BLAMED HIM,—NEVER (T. H. Bayly) From: Jim Dixon Date: 22 Mar 10 - 12:38 AM This must have been a very popular ballad; WorldCat.org lists 29 copies of the sheet music in various libraries. The lyrics are by Thomas Haynes Bayly; several composers have set his poem to music. Some copies are marked "Answer to the admired ballad, 'Oh! No—We Never Mention Her.'" From Fifty Lyrical Ballads by [Nathaniel] Thomas Haynes Bayly (Bath [England]: Printed by Mary Meyler, 1829), page 47: SHE NEVER BLAMED HIM,—NEVER. Thomas Haynes Bayly She never blamed him—never, But received him when he came, With a welcome kind as ever, Though she started at his name: But vainly she dissembled, For whene'er she tried to smile A tear unbidden trembled In her blue eye all the while. She knew that she was dying, And she dreaded not her doom; She never thought of sighing O'er her beauty's blighted bloom: She knew her cheek was alter'd, And she knew her eye was dim; But her sweet voice only falter'd When she spoke of leaving him. 'Tis true that He had lured her From the Isle where she was born; 'Tis true He had inured her To the cold world's cruel scorn: But yet she never blamed him, For the anguish she had known, And though she seldom named him— Yet she thought of him alone. She sighed when he caress'd her, For she knew that they must part; She spoke not when He press'd her To his young and panting heart: The banners waved around her, And she heard the bugles sound; They pass'd—and strangers found her Cold and lifeless on the ground. |
