Well I was there with my rapper team (Smutt) and we had a top time. The cricket club on Saturday night until the early hours was totally brilliant. Songs songs and more bawdy songs! ...and beer, oh my yes. Beer.

Chris we gave the session the name that George asked us to give it.
As to the pubs shutting early.
Maybe the staff had had enough or thought their customers had. If you can't get enough to drink from breakfast until 2.00 am then you haven't tried hard enough!
Also the late closure of another establishment caused problems in areas which I'm not prepared to go into in a public forum

Tyke was indeed there, in full song and on very good form, when I and some others went over to the Elephant at about 10.00pm ish and it were grand to see 'im.

We had a brill sesh and the whole pub seemed to join in and really enloyed it. Turfing out time from the pub was indeed about 2.00am and then we headed to The Old Bridge only to find it shut up.
So me and a few other rascals headed to The Nook for a night cap.

There is no need to question Tyke's account or diss him because what he says is true.

And don't worry Tyke we are all up for it to provide a little more help for you to 'drink the pub dry' next year.

P.S Why did The Old Bridge Hotel close so early this year compared to previous festivals? It did displease many good and loyal festival goers. We lost the tradition of Ray's wibberly wobberly walk back to the campsite from there!

Tyke's 'drink the bar dry' session in The Elephant was posted on the website but not in the printed programme so many folks looking for a singaround would not have been aware of it.

Although it was colour-coded on the website as a free singaround/musician/open session etc ( I forget the true description)why was it promoted as a 'drink the bar dry' session? This just sounds like one big piss up and is very misleading and could have put people off from attending.
Why not just call it 'a singaround with George Clarke' which describes what it was and is far less confusing?

I apologise big time Cath if you think I am nit-picking, being pedantic or criticising you personally. I am not. I am just offering what I hope is some constructive, and hopefully practical advice, for next year's festival. Please accept it in good spirit in the manner in which it is intended.

I have to confess I looked into the Elephant and Friday to find him not there but he did appear on Sunday afternoon at the Old Bridge.
However his account of closing times on Saturday night/Sunday morning concurs with what I was told. I wouldn't know personally as i was in my bed shortly after the witching hour to be ready for Church on Sunday!

Well I've just about recovered from trying to drink the Pub Dry Sessions in the Elephant. The Friday Night Session in the Elephant was absolutely heaving with plenty of Singers and Musicians. In past years it has been a few friends and myself on the Friday Night then heaving on the Saturday Night.

The Elephant and Castle is just on the Western Edge of Holmfirth and overlooked by Nora Batties House. It's a very well run pub clean and friendly to the Festival and the Folkies have the support of the Landlady and the regulars of the Pub.

When I arrived on the Saturday Night around 8.30 (food is served during the day) there were a couple of people with instruments still in their cases sat about. The music was playing loudly through the Pub Music System. It was obviously stopping the Musicians from starting a session. Once I caught the eye of the Landlady I only had to point to the speaker in the room and the Music was turned down and then off immediately.

Now I the kind of person who enjoys a challenge and that gets a lot of personal satisfaction getting the audience on side and joining in. This I did with my first song and by my third I had the whole bar singing and joining in. Other Musicians by this time had appeared and The Drink the Pub Dry session was in full swing. Time for my second pint and guess what they had run out of Speckled Hen!

My thanks to Rum Doodle, Muppet, Harry Wilson, and Soldier Boy and quiet a few others whose names have escaped me for supporting the session on Saturday that went on till 2am. I then reported to the Bridge for Barnsley's Wibberly Wobberly Walking workshop to find it shut. This forced me to have to Wibble Wobble back to the Campsite on my own whilst the rest headed to the Nook (open till 5am). Before reaching my bed I found the Barnsley Crowd in the Cricket Club and The Sheffield Ensemble of String Pluckers and Strummers. They had obviously been seduced into a night at the Cricket Club with a real ale bar and a more child friendly venue.

I found out later that one or two people had opted for an open mike session. But my favourite occupation is still playing to a mainly none Folk Audience and having got their attention sneaking in something with a little meat in it. I will defiantly need a little more help next year if we are going to drink the Pub Dry so let me know if you are up for it. It has to be said that as usual Holmfirth Festival of Folk has something for everyone.

Well I had a very enjoyable afternoon in the PostCard on Sunday afternoon though it was pretty packed and hard to get a seat. Friends told me it was cold in Stamps. And whoever the banjo-playing Chelsea supporter was who didn't know the score he must have had a pleasant surprise when he found out.

We just fancied a singaround rather than a concert so we limited our choice it has to be admitted - the time we were looking for something was around 4 - 5 on Sat and there was't much going on at that time. I thought there was an all day singing session planned at the Elephant & Castle so expected a number of people in there

Not a reflection on the organisers who did right to move the Sunday event from Stamps.
Stamps the venue for the singaround had a long list of "faults":-
Cold room, not only at he end by the very draughty doors, but also at the bar end,
flaking paint on underground walls due to damp,
gent's loo out of commission, one cubicle in female loo had a light which was not working.
poor selection of drinks, certainly did not match the selection in the Postcard above,
tables of the trestle variety, some seemed a little wobbly
lighting 4 long strip lights, so little atmosphere.
Given the fact that on the two occasions I was in there(Stamps) all seats were taken and the pub upstairs (Postcard) was packed (I was in the session) I think the festival organisers and goers have a right to expect decent accommodation standards from pubs etc.
I wounder how much that particular landlord's takings were up as a result of the festival, I don't know many folkies who abstain from the nectar on such occasions!

Those were with us to the end will know that we moved from Stamps for the Sunday afternoon Folk Club, much to the disgruntlement (!) of the Landlord but the comfort of the audience was more important than him having to rearrange his staffing rota.

Not sure which venue you mean MC Fat. The Bridge on Saturday night was so warm I was down to a T-shirt within moments of arriving. The Nook was cosy and I bet the Picturedrome was positively sweaty.

The weather was cold for the time of year, though the sun made occasional appearances. I gave one of the last caravanners a hand while walking the dog this morning and he said the festival had been 'marvellous'.

I wasn't there but I listened to what my friends said and their view was that the venue was cold and the toilets were if you pardon the expression crap. The singing may have been good but the fact that the venue was pepared to take cash over the bar and not invest in basic facilities is not good for festival goers.

Lovely festival, cold weather, warm welcome. This is one of the great festivals in UK. Its all about the locality and driven by local people. We looked in Stamps on Sat afternoon but it seemed very uninviting and also went to Elephant & Castle a couple of times but nothing happening there. Bit disappointing as we had spent an hour on a bus stuck at Bailiff Bridge on the way there!

Had an enjoyable day yesterday with Ray Hearne doing a really nice hour of talking about his songs and writing process with some really good stuff sung. Ray is really one of the tops. Plus a nice little sesh in the Nook afterwards. I understand that the the 'Stamps' was awfull on Saturday. It was pretty shabby last year and it seems even less has been done to make it comfortable. I think t'committee need to kick the veue into touch for next year.

The Yorkshire songs workshop I felt went very well and thanks to all who stayed!

Stamps was a bit problematic and 0 degrees C was nearly achieved!

I enjoyed the Friday and Sunday concerts I went to and thanks also to Will for the Holmfirth Anthem finish

Great festival and hope Hff continues with its find of great singers

Big, big thanks to Cath, all the organisers and the small army of volunteers, who all worked tirelessly all weekend to produce yet another brilliant, friendly and very well organised festival.

My own enjoyment of the weekend was affected by a domestic medical drama at my parents and by a very drunken and violent youth on Saturday night. But that takes nothing away from what was truly a superb weekend.

It was so good to meet up again with the 'extended family' of all my folkie friends for the first time this year and I look forward to the next opportunity for us all to get together again.

The ticket said 7.30 in fact they came on at 9.30.The singer song writer was very good.Here comes the bad bit.For people like me who have followed show of hands for years standing venues for 3/4 hours don`t put you in the best mood for a good night.I do except in your younger years great I was lucky I arrived early,but I did see quite a few older fans who I bet went home inspired but with sore feet and backs.Moaning over.Still the best around.Captain Farrell.

I'm gonna bring a flipping 'Flip Chart' and an easel and a long stick to point out the words Muppett, will that do?
My poor eye sight needs BIG lettering nowadays - and that way everyone else can join in too - Result!! Can't believe nobody's thought of it before!

I'm going to see Show of Hands at the Picturedrome Fri night with a bunch of friends so won't be joining you guys in The Elephant and Castle till after midnight.

And I am sure I will be part of Ray's wibberly wobberly walking parade back to the campsite from The Old Bridge Hotel's late session once again - and I want to see how dirty Tyke presents his Barnsley Chop to some female back on the campsite. The mind boggles!

I Hope some of you can come along to my mate Ray Bower's stories and song session in Sid's cafe on Saturday from 6-8.00pm.

The weather forecast for the weekend unfortunately is "Cold, Wet and Windy" so bring yer wellies and macs and wrap up warm folks with lots of extra bedding.

Finished assembling folders of the specially selected songs for the Sunday morning UkeThrash last night. Bring your ukes, enthusiasm and hang-overs to Stamps at 10.30 and we'll have a blast!

No tricky songs - many two-chord and three-chord songs, but all great songs (naturally!)

And if you don't already have a uke, the music shop behind The Old Bridge Hotel has a fine range of budget and mid-priced ukes: and they've been alerted that there might be a little extra interest this coming weekend, so they should have plenty in.

I know that you work very hard to make this festival successful and that you are a true grafter but it would seem that you take everything far too personally and are easily upset.

The thing that annoyed me the most is that I was the one in receipt of all your criticism when I am not actually responsible for the delays. I am the one who comes on here to help answer questions and try to let people know what is going on.
Chris you have ways of making your concerns known without having to do it in the way you did - you could have done like Ray did and email any member of the committee personally. You could have directed your concerns to the Chair of the committee and I'm going to suggest that a contact email be set up for him.
As to having an interim timetable the answer is no. I've tried that before and you end up with so many problems with people who think it is the real one and then get really miffed when things change. It is always a work in progress until it goes to the printer and actually it was still a work in progress this year as our programme maker sent the wrong version (not my fault!) so that was something else that James had to sort out.
But I hope you enjoy the festival - you will be able to relax and join in all the fun that you know will be there - some of us will still be working all weekend to ensure that happens for you.

To Cath, Duggs,all the other organisers and the many volunteers involved with this festival, I wish to apologise for coming across as so critical and negative about some aspects of the festival on this thread.

I have the balls - albeit briefly; 'cos I am about to lose one this friday!(could be part of the reason for getting so uptight!) to hold my hands up and confess that I have gone too far and that my comments have done a disservice to this wonderful festival.

I regret that initially I took umbrage against Cath when she posted that comment saying they (the organizers) might have to take a year off and consider moving to a bigger site because the festival was getting bigger every year.
I still think that she was out of order in saying this but I do appreciate how she might have been tempted to say it in the first place but it kind of poisoned the atmosphere between us.

At the end of the day I started this thread in the first place to promote this excellent friendly festival and champion it, so of course, what I should not do then is to start to find problems and become very critical about certain aspects of it's organization.
So I do sincerely apologise for going off on one and finding fault like I have done.

The main gist for my angst was that I became cross and frustrated because of the delay in putting up the timetable of events for the festival on the website and felt genuinely concerned that every day of delay, so close to the actual festival weekend itself, could mean substantial loss of potential customers and therefore loss of income generated for the festival. So YOUR interests were at the very heart of my concern.

Could the actual timetable be a sort of 'work in progress' on the website and be updated and filled in on a almost daily basis with the main known and committed events appearing first and the minutia of detail then added stage by stage as they are confirmed and then fitted into the bill - rather than wait and wait until the very final,final,finalized timetable can be revealed with so little time left for people to decide? A kind of 'watch this space' to keep people interested and engaged. Especially if they are only coming to the festival for one day etc.

I am not being critical here I am just offering, hopefully, some constructive ideas/advice.

Anyway folks, I actually really love this very very special festival and am really looking forward to it and regret it if I have at all 'dissed' it in anyway. Sorry to Cath especially!

This festival is entirely run by a great team of enthusiastic and very committed volunteers who work very hard indeed to make it all work and do the very best they can. They are always the un-sung heros and deserve every praise and not criticism.
God bless all the volunteer organizers and everyone involved in this festival and let's look forward with glad hearts to a wonderful festival. Let's put any problems behind us and have a damn good do. Enjoy, because I know you will!

After Mr Fox has performed (approx 9pm Methodist Church Car Park) you will be accosted by several foxes (me included) rattling buckets into which we would prefer you to place coin and paper of the realm voluntarily. Excuses that you have previously done so during the day are NOT acceptable! You would not wish the wrath of the Fox to descend on you - beware, we have long memories.

On a lighter note can I recommend watching out at noon for a team of small people dancing in orange and yellow? Well worth seeing.

I'm happy to receive constructive comments and answer questions so here goes.
As it says on the opening page of the web site most events are free. The only ones you need tickets for are at the Old Bridge Hotel in the function room, the ceilidh on Saturday night and those events on Friday and Saturday nights at the Picturedrome. Contact details for tickets are on the web site.
As far as I am aware the only things yet to go on the web site are details of most of the artists - many of whom are pretty well known - and workshops and special events. The info on what is happening in the various venues is there so sort out what you want to dip into and see you there.

The timetable comes up on my screen in a perfectly acceptable size and is readable even for my old tired eyes. There is a link to it on the home page and on the news page. I think the reason for it being on the news page is that when it was put there it was 'news'.

Sessions will happen in the Nook over the weekend but are likely to be very crowded.
Market Hall Friday night, Postcard Saturday afternoon and Sunday afternoon (Irish) are the official ones and anyone is welcome at the Vic a little way out of the town at any time.
Things tend to happen spontaneously and people are welcome in the Shoulder and there are notices on the windows of the White Hart saying that folk are welcome there!

Compared to last year The Holmfirth Festival of Folk web site is much less user friendly, boring in appearance and layout, and it is less easy to find the information everyone wants.

The MINUTE "Timetable Finalised" of all events on Fri/Sat/Sunday now appears under the 'News' link rather than the 'Events' link which is the most obvious place where you would think it should be.

SO why make it so difficult for punters to get information?

The web site this year has no comparison to last years web site which was much clearer and well laid out and informative and had the brilliant artistry of the bloke that does all the pictures in The Nook and on their new Headboard/Nook brewery beer pumps and beer mats etc. So why spoil a good recipe. If it's not broke, why try to fix it?

Sorry to be so negative AGAIN but I give up, I really do!

For best singaround doncatterall on Friday head for 'The Nook', if that is overflowing with people and too noisy/cramped, head for 'The Elephant and Castle' and if you wish to sing your heart out into the extended hours of the morning head for 'The Old Bridge Hotel' where most singers/concert goers end up late in the night/morning.

It's only a fairly small compact village so it is only a short stroll between each pub/hotel; just ask anyone out and about for directions to the venues I have mentioned above and you will soon be there.

If you take a look at the web site it will tell you that for most things you do not need a ticket. Even though James hasn't had chance to enter all the artists information that isn't what most people come to Holmfirth for. The info on venues is there and the timetable is there and the programmes (printed) will be out at the beginning of this week.
There isn't an official singaround organised for Friday as we haven't found a need to do that in the past. There is an Open Mic session at Smythes if that is the kind of thing you like. Tyke will be in the Elephant and Castle attempting to drink it dry from Friday onwards I believe! I In past years there has been a singaround in the bar of the Old Bridge after the concert has finished. I'm not sure what time it has ended because I've usually been in my bed well before in order to be bright eyed and bushy tailed and ready for Saturday. Head for any pub and you'll find something happening.

It's been very tight this year! Very tight indeed!

You must learn and understand that many punters will not commit to coming to festivals and put them in their diaries untill they know the full timetable and know what is going on in terms of who is on and where and when, so they can plan their weekend ahead.

Usual practice is at least two months before the festival; otherwise punters will begin to think that if you can't make the effort they won't make the effort too and will stay away.

And the festival now is only 16 days away. That's very poor!
Sorry to be so critical but, please make sure next year that the timetable is posted much earlier. It does count and is very important to the success of this festival.

Sorry for delay but I've been busy with other things - yes there are other things in life!
I know that James has been up to his neck in sorting out the fringe events, open stage and pa requirements so not all the stuff has gone on the new web site.
The timetable hasn't gone on yet as it isn't quite finalised but that should be happening this afternoon and then agreed at tonight's meeting.
Also James is going to show me how to put things on the web site so I can add all the stuff that I have as soon as I get chance.
So all will become clear.

Can anyone help us out by letting us know when the Holmfirth Festival of Folk website will be fully updated to include details of all events occuring over the weekend with a full schedule of times, artists/events and locations each day.
I've just checked the website and found no detail of an events schedule so far.

My new songbook is filling up nicely with more songs and will be on its best behaviour sitting next to me pint all weekend.
My last songbook died of rot and staining due to exposure to spilt beer, rain and curry.
Think I'll get me new songbook a rain mate!

The Nook Brewery beer is indeed very good Cath.
It only brewed it's first batch in July 2009 and has already won a best beer award from CAMRA (the Campaign for Real Ale) for it's 'Nook Blond' ale.

Whe I first tried Nook Blond it Wow'd me with it's pure quality and moorishly refreshing flavour - so moorish in fact that I had to keep trying it again and again! So it, and all the other growing number of Nook Brewery creattions, deserve to be recognised and win awards; and I'm sure that more awards will follow.

And guess what! The Nook is holding it's "Spring Beer Festival" THIS VERY WEEKEND !! (Fri 26 - Sun 28 March).
So no prizes for guessing where I, and a bunch of my mates, will be tonight!

Anyone else coming?

The guest list and programme are well on the way but as we have had a complete revamp of the web site it's taking a little time to get all the information on. The news bit gives you the latest Press Release which tells you quite a bit.
