In case anybody else wants to learn it, here's the version I know.

Sold my rock and sold my reel (things needed to spin yarn)
likewise sold my spinning wheel
t'buy my love a sword of steel -
Daddy has gone for a soldier.

Oh my baby, oh my dove
gone the rainbow, gone the dove.
Y'r father was my own true love -
Ddaddy has gone for a soldier.

I play this on my dulcimer. Instead of the nonsense syllables, I improvise on the tune between verses. Otherwise it's just too short for me.

Yep Allan, I reckon that's the way I used to play it too - many moons ago.

Thank you very much Allan. It's greatly appreciated. I do have the lyrics. It was more the chords that I needed.

Mudcat comes up trumps again.

First I want to strongly suggest you check out some of the many discussion threads we have had about this song which speak to its various permutations and origins – most especially the American versions with the phonic gibberish that came to replace the original Gaelic. The version PP&M sang was reasonably close to a version that became popular during the American Civil War.

Here are the chords I use:

Here(Em) I sit(D) on Butter(C)milk Hill;(Em)

Who(D) could blame me, cry(Em)my fill;

(G)Every tear(D) would turn(C) a mill,(Em)

(G)Johnny's gone(D) for a soldier.(Em)

(G)Shule, shule,(D) shule(Em)-a-roo,

Shule(D)-a-rak-shak, shule(Em)-a-ba-ba-coo.

(G)When I saw(D) my Sally(C) Babby Beal,(Em)

come bibble(D) in the boo(Bm) shy Lorey.(Em)

With added use of the baby finger here and there, the melody notes can be picked fairly easily using these chords. It also works well in A minor, using: Am, G, C, F and Em.

You can find PP&M lyrics at
their website.

Hi Greg and thanks for your response.

The problem is, that I used to sing PP&M's version to my autistic daughter (badly :-) ) before she went to sleep at night (when she was young). She is having guitar lessons and wants to learn this song, but will only do it the way PP&M do it.

I am aware of the other versions.

I just organise folk concerts, but do not have any musical ability. So as such I am a listener.

Cheers
les

You're looking for 'Shul Aroon/Arun' (Gaelic Transliteration)

Here are the lyrics:

http://lyricsplayground.com/alpha/songs/b/buttermilkhill.shtml

It's a pretty basic minor-key song.

Can I suggest though, that you can do much better, as PPM, god
love 'em, were quite awkward in their interpretation of the
Gaelic chorus, as was common for Americans trying to get 'round
Gaelic in the early 60's.

There are plenty of interpretations of "Johnny's Gone for a Soldier"
that are much sounder and more worth-while than doing a cover of the PPM classic.

I am not a musician, but I am after the chords with lyrics for guitar for my daughter, who wants to learn it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
