Subject: Maine House Conc't Martyn Wyndam-Read From: SINSULL Date: 26 Mar 10 - 11:12 AM Saturday, April 17 6PM Buffet and Concert $15 to performer Reservation Required Who needs a bed???? Martyn Wyndham-Read has been involved with folk music for over forty years. In his late teens he left his mother's farm in Sussex and headed off, with his guitar, to Australia where he worked on a sheep station Emu Springs in South Australia. It was while he was there that he heard, first hand, the old songs sung by some of the station hands at Emu Springs and he became captivated by these songs and the need to know more of them and where they came from grew. He headed off to Melbourne and became part of the folk song revival there and throughout Australia during the early1960's.. Back to England in 1967 where he met up with the renowned singer and song collector Bert Lloyd, who himself had spent time in Australia. Martyn was asked by Bert Lloyd to be part of the album 'Leviathan' on the Topic label and soon after he started recording for Bill Leader and touring extensively worldwide. In the early 1970's Martyn started the 'Maypoles to Mistletoe' concerts which portray the seasons of the year through song, music, dance and verse and illustration. Martyn is also the instigator of the well known Song Links Project, Martyn is currently working with Shirley Collins on a production called 'Down the Lawson Track' featuring stories, poems/songs of the great Australian Poet of the People, Henry Lawson with Pip Barnes, Iris Bishop, Gary Holder and Jackie Oates. His CD Jackeroo portrays his life so far through songs both old and new. |

Subject: RE: Maine House Conc't Martyn Wyndam-Read From: Callitfolk Date: 27 Mar 10 - 10:23 PM I had a chance to see Martyn about ten years ago in Pennsylvania. I think he is vastly underappreciated. His Fellside recording, Mussels on a Tree is a classic by me. His voice does not have the widest range, but most of his songs fit quite well and ring authentic. Call it Folk |

Subject: RE: Maine House Conc't Martyn Wyndam-Read From: Zany Mouse Date: 29 Mar 10 - 04:48 PM I wish we could be there. You'll all have a brilliant time. Martyn has been my main folk hero for decades now and I get to see him whenever possible. Not only an excellent performer but an all-round good egg too. Get him to sing Sailor's Return. One of my proudest folk moments ever was singing in his house concert out in France. I sang Sailor's Return to Martyn's guiltar and Bill Whaley on squeezebox and Dave Fletcher on low D whistle. The memory will live on forever. Rhiannon |

Subject: RE: Maine House Conc't Martyn Wyndam-Read -April From: maeve Date: 13 Apr 10 - 10:31 AM Still working on it here. Very highly recommended by one who has seen his performance twice this spring, thanks to Jacqui. maeve |

Subject: RE: Maine House Concert Martyn Wyndam-Read -April 17 From: jacqui.c Date: 18 Apr 10 - 07:42 AM This was an unbelievably great evening. Martyn is an entertainer of the highest calibre and we were so lucky to have been there last evening. Even after being on the road all day and started his performance very shortly after that long drive this man kept all of us, and we did end up with a respectable number, absolutely enthralled for the whole evening. I have a suspicion that, if he and his wife Dani hadn't had to leave to keep up with their schedule, he might have carried on a lot longer - he certainly seemed to be enjoying himself as much as we were enjoying listening to him. No CDs for sale - he had run out - so I'm glad that I got mine when I saw him in Camden a couple of weeks ago. I think he website may take a few hits from our crowd. I think that Maeve may have got a list of the songs that he sang. His storytelling and humour are superb and he even had Kendall laughing at some of his humourous poetry and stories. His obvious love of Australia comes across in a lot of the songs and stories he tells and gave a real glimpse of a fascinating country and its people. I only wish that they could have spent a bit longer with us, so that we could show them some real Maine hospitality. I'm hoping that we might entice Martyn and Dani back for another concert next time he's over and, given enough notice, maybe we'll get some Mudcatters to come visit for the concert - this man is well worth travelling to see! |
Subject: RE: Maine House Concert Martyn Wyndam-Read -April 17 From: kendall Date: 18 Apr 10 - 08:27 AM Top quality entertainer; loved everything he did, and I've never heard Carrying Nelson Home done better. |
Subject: RE: Maine House Concert Martyn Wyndam-Read -April 17 From: SINSULL Date: 18 Apr 10 - 11:13 AM What an amazing evening. Martyn and Dani are so gracious. He could have gone on until the wee hours of the morn and no one would have moved. Where Ravens Feed and Carrying Nelson Home, Reade River, The Snake and the Frog, The Shearer's Lament, The Cat Story, The Dog Song with Seamus draped over Martyn's feet. So many beautiful songs and stories. Martyn loves and respects his music. His performance is all about the song. Just brilliant. AAAAND the man is partial to nodding headed pets. I was relieved of the lobster he admired. Couldn't convince Dani to take the hideous peacock or the singing dancing lobster. Someone who appreciates kitsch. Just brilliant. |
Subject: RE: Maine House Concert Martyn Wyndam-Read -April 17 From: ranger1 Date: 18 Apr 10 - 01:07 PM Martyn was fantastic. And a good introduction to Mary and Jacqui's house concert series for my in-laws and my friend Michael. I have a feeling all three of them will be back again... |
Subject: RE: Maine House Concert Martyn Wyndam-Read -April 17 From: Jeri Date: 18 Apr 10 - 01:26 PM I wish I'd had my camera. Seamus planted himself at Martyn's feet (more like ON Martyn's feet) and inspired him to do the song about a man and his old dog. I asked for Where Ravens Feed because of this thread, but Jacqui asked for it too. It's always good to see old friends, and it was great to meet some new folks. It was a room full of a perfect mix of audience (or would have been perfect if some of the Press Room peeps had made it up!). ...and some day, FAR down the road, Martyn will go up to the Pearly Gates--which old Saint Pete will open AND close--and enter into that place where all sickness is banished, scars erased, and everyone is made whole again and exquisite, and when he sings for the angels, he will sound not one bit different than he does now. Thank you, Mary; thank you, Jacqui; thank you, Martyn. |
Subject: RE: Maine House Concert Martyn Wyndam-Read -April 17 From: maeve Date: 18 Apr 10 - 04:25 PM It was an evening full of pure pleasure.
