One of the first yodellers I remember hearing was Darlene Gillespie, a contemporary of Annette Funicello's on the original Mickey Mouse Club TV show in the US in the 50s. I liked Darlene more than Annette, but I guess most viewers and Walt Disney preferred Annette. I never heard Annette yodel.

This thread made me think of the Country Music in Australia set I haven't listened to in years. Just put on disc 1 and there's a LOT of yodeling on it. Swiss Sweetheart by Joan Ridgeway. Home Way out Back & Bushland Sweetheart by Reg Lindsay. Shearin' Time by Arthur Blanch. Lots of others. Good stuff.

I've always enjoyed the Jimmie Rodgers "blue yodels," and have learned to emulate that very limited kind of yodeling fairly well.

A few years ago, I started a Mudcat thread and titled it "Dare to Yodel." I encouraged one and all not to be intimidated and to go ahead and try yodeling. It ain't all that difficult, I said, just do it!

(Incidentally: I was proud, and humbled, to have Joe Offer make a comment to the effect of "best thread title ever," or words to that effect.)

Not long afterwards, I had occasion to hear some REAL high-speed non-stop yodeling, whole songs consisting of constrant ullulation, and realized that I *CAN'T* produce vocalization anything like that, and that most other folks are quite correct in realizing that they can't do it either.

So, I hereby apologize and retract anything I've said in the past abut how easy it is to yodel, and how skilled I myself might be as a yodeler. That real yodeling is way beyond my capabilities...

THERE ARE MANY WHO YODEL THESE DAYS..one is Wylie Gustafson...his claim to fame (one of them) is that he has recorded the
"THEME SONG" for YAHOO and he gives yodelling lessons and contests for Yahoo..http://www.wylieww.com/...his band is called Wild West.

Don Gibson, Doug Green (of Rider in the Sky) and Roy Rogers are/were very good yodellers.

Slim Whitman went far away from "country music" sometimes. His version of Indian Love Call must be heard (at least once).

Guess I should turn myself in as guilty of enjoying yodelers. I have no idea where I first heard someone yodel but have enjoyed it forever. Made a special effort to bring Patsy Montana, Kenny Roberts, David Bradley, Kerry Christensen, Van Williams, and Marge and Debby Rhodes to the Folk Center and also have enjoyed the fine singing and yodeling of Lou Stebner.

Way back I remember my parents having some old Ronnie Ronalde 78s and at 3 years old I was enthralled at the yodelling he did. They also had an old 78 of the Kiwi yodeller Tex Morton singing "Big Rock Candy Mountain". I broke 2 78s my dad had of Slim Whitman and only heard them years later when I found them in a junk sale and bought them for him. Slim's voice won me over to country music and yodelling.

Through the years I have heard many more yodellers and whilst my taste in music spreads from classical to blues and jazz, country remains my first love and I still always love to hear a yodeller.

In recent years I have compiled many albums for the UK Jasmine label. They discovered there is a lot of interest in this kind of music and wanted someone that could help them compile CDs. So now I am able to share that interest I built all those years ago.

Who else likes to hear a yodeller? How did you discover the art? Who are your favourites? I now have too many to mention.
