Today listening to Frank, and Art, and Kendall and Jerry and my list goes on and on today ... It dawned on me how priceless these recordings are ... There will be a time for all of us that we will have to put down our instruments and then what is left ... recordings that are priceless to those around us like our kids grand kids , friends and so on ... Now there is not a computer today that doesn't have a sound card ... most have built in mikes ... Who cares what the quality of any recording you make .. it is for yourself, your family, your friends and for you ...

Take some time and record ... time passes, it moves on and is moving faster everyday as we get older ... these are things we can leave behind ... just something to think about. It doesn't have to be music, it can be stories, it can be anything but please do it ...

I agree with you Old Dude that artists please record yourselves properly.
I am just finishing off the third International compilation and many fine artists are only represented by poor quality recordings,which include, people coughing,doors slamming, talking and dogs barking.
Their playing is remembered by many as outstanding and a must for a compilation that includes archives, but I can do nothing with what they leave behind.

Al - remind me, the next time we record, to add a few grunts, sneezes, belches and farts to the recording - you know, like when we play live... What will our descendants think of us then, I wonder?

Dan, one of the reasons for my videoing stuff is to, hopefully, preserve something of my music - good or bad - for my grandchildren to see when I've gone. I often take a DVD camcorder to club nights to record the performance of a performer I like - with their permission, of course - and I just wish I'd been able to do the same for the wonderful people I've seen over 40 years or so.

Scattered here and there are videos, DVD's, countless minidisk recordings, (mostly from The Adventure,) and various other recordings in a variety of formats. I suppose most of them are still listenable if someone wanted to take the time to find them and play them. I suppose I should compile them into some sort of sensible form for posterity, shouldn't I?

Meanwhile, I have finally accumulated the stuff necessary to outfit a home studio and have begun the tedious, frustrating, and exasperating task of learning how to use said equipment to its best advantage in order to create some sort of idea of what Carmen and I might sound like if we were heard at our best.

So, yes, I completely agree that such endeavors are very important. But while you're at it, take a bit of time to record your own narrative of your family's history - complete with favorite family stories, anecdotes, etc., including perhaps some of the lesser known facts about you and things you have accomplished. There are some great websites around where you can discover lists of questions to answer about family history. Just do it! Later may be too late.

And the great thing is everyone can cause every PC is capable. You are so absolutely right. I could not play the guitar for over 15 years after I lost feeling in my hands ... 15 years .. I was so lost and wished -prayed I had recorded something for my kids and grand kids someday. I thought that my kids would only remember I used to play ... well I am playing again and I am not making that mistake again ... I got a second chance .. but trust me it sucks when you wished you could have or should have ... PLEASE RECORD ... ANYTHING ... JUST RECORD!! It doesn't matter how you sound, there is only a few people who are pro's who have a following ... we play for us, for our friends, for our family and to them, it is priceless ... so don't worry about it just record ...

There should be quite a bit of me in the School of Scottish Studies. Ailie Munroe did a bit of recording in Sandy Bell's, and the Edgar Ashton Collection should include recordings of everything performed at Edinburgh University Folk Song Society over a fairly long period including the years I was involved.
