Subject: Lyr Req: The Felt Hat song
From: GUEST,Chris Muriel

Trying to get hold of ths oldie that I originally heard in a folk club in Colchester around 1975 and even used to perform myself.
I'm pretty sure I have the chorus correct.

What I recall is :

My granny died the other day, it filled my heart with care
'Cos grannies are quite hard to get - and she's 1 of a matching pair.
The awful pain that my heart felt.... (don't remember rest of verse)

CHORUS

And I've never felt an old felt hat like that felt hat felt.
Never felt an old felt hat like that.
I've felt some good felt hats and I've felt some bad felt hats
But I've never felt an old felt hat like that felt hat.

While riding my bike the other day.

Thanks for any additions....
Chris Muriel, Sale, Chesire.

I thought this was going to be:

Ave you ever had your ole? have you ever had your ole?
Have you ever had your old man's 'at on?
Ever had your ole felt? ever had your ole felt?
Ever had your old felt 'at on?

But that's just me!

Totally different song, although based around some similar constructions.

In the bike riding verse I recall that the singer's hat fell or blew off , possibly landing in a sewage farm.
(just hoping this might jog someone's memory).

Probably not the song you want, but an interesting bit of trivia:

Hoagy Carmichael wrote (or perhaps started to write and never finished) a song called I LOVE YOU LIKE MY OLD FELT HAT.

An incomplete bit of sheet music, apparently in Hoagy's own handwriting, can be seen here, in the Hoagy Carmichael collection at Indiana University. It's the one crossed out at the top of the page. There are no lyrics.

It's listed at The Official Hoagy Carmichael official web site with no publication data, so I suppose that means it was never published (and perhaps never completed).

*

I found this in several collections of tongue-twisters:

Of all the felt I ever felt,
I never felt a piece of felt
Which felt as fine as that felt felt,
When first I felt that felt hat's felt.

*

Other than that, I'm stumped.

Thanks for that titbit, Jim.

Here's an update (might jog somebody's memory) - got 2 verses now.....

My granny died the other day, it filled my heart with care
'Cos grannies are quite hard to get - and she's 1 of a matching pair.
The awful pain that my heart felt it made me feel quite flat
Until I found that in her will she'd left me her old felt hat.

CHORUS

And I've never felt an old felt hat like that felt hat felt.
Never felt an old felt hat like that.
I've felt some good felt hats and I've felt some bad felt hats
But I've never felt an old felt hat like that felt hat.

While riding my bike the other day downhill to the sewage farm
An accident befell me but my hat saved me from harm.
I hit a stone, sailed o'er the bridge and might well have been drowned
But my felt hat showed rescuers the spot where I went down.

CHORUS

There's at least 1 or perhaps 2 more verses missing.
