What I personally like about it, is the cock-sure male youth trying to convince himself (or is it her?) that she'll be back, oh yes! From discussion on other threads, some (Malcolm Douglas I believe) have said that it was Anne Briggs who put the lament-like spin on the song (which endures to this day), while the original was much more jaunty. |

As for women, and for that matter, men singers I enjoy listening to, I haven't much time for gentle, arty technically correct vocals. I like singers with passion, and singers who can convince me that the song they're singing is real, and that if they haven't actually lived the subject matter, they damned well sound as if they have. I'm not sure I can furnish many links. You have to remember that a good many of the singers I listed are now dead and never got the recognition they deserved when they were alive. However, a small number were included in Topic's Voice of the People, and more will doubtless appear on the new VOTP, which uses material from Peter Kennedy's collection, and is I believe due for release in September. One or two of the other singers can be found on Smithsonian Folkways http://www.folkways.si.edu/ , while most of the Gaelic singers are on Cló Iar Chonnachta http://www.cic.ie/ . Both of these sites offer soundclips. Finally, as Matthew Edwards pointed out, most of the singers I've listed have appeared on my Worlds of Trad Interent Radio station in the past and will again in the future. http://www.live365.com/stations/oneworldmusic And Matthew is quite right. I should have included Emma Vickers in that top-of-my-head summary. Equally, I should have mentioned Chris Miles from Fife, Karin Edvards Johannson from Dalarna, Sweden, Pastore Pavan (La Nina de los Pienes) from Andalucia, Spain, Sheila Stewart, Sarah and Rita Keane, plus a whole lot more I'll think of directly I press the GO button. Plu, there's a whole lot of great women singers whose names I don't know because they appear on field anthologies and the collectors and/or producers couldn't be bothered to say who they were. |

Subject: RE: Female Folk Vocalists of Distinction From: Matthew Edwards Date: 03 Apr 10 - 11:30 AM I expect Fred is too modest to mention that most of the women cited in his "long old list" can be heard by regular listeners to his internet radio broadcast Worlds of Trad. The current playlist for March actually doesn't feature as many female performers as usual, but it does include Emma Vickers singing the Pace Egg Song, and Emma certainly belongs in any list of 'Female Folk Vocalists of Distinction' as does Ola Belle Reed who also features in the playlist. Fred and others have mentioned Jean Ritchie (Kytrad); to me she embodies so much of what I find to treasure in the folk tradition so here are three YouTube performances posted by George Pickow. The first shows the Ritchie Family gathering at Christmas 1955 where you can see just how Jean's songs are firmly embedded in the tradition of her family. The second shows Jean singing her own composition Still I Love Him at a more recent 2009 family gathering, which shows clearly how the tradition is being passed down. Finally here is Jean with her sister Edna singing The Four Marys, a song which Jean was instrumental in reviving in the British tradition through sharing it with other singers. Enjoy! Matthew |

I always enjoyed Shirley Collins when I lived in London. Someone mentioned Judith Durham in a previous thread.She had a crystal clear wonderful voice.Great for the sort of pop The Seekers did but I doubt if Ewan Mac Coll ever have sent her an invitation to The Singers' Club!.Compare Dusty when she was with The Springfields. I don't think Mary Black has had a mention.Her early stuff was good but she's gone MOR for some time now. |

I've known this gal since she first came into one of Seattle's coffeehouses back around 1961, fresh out of high school. So nervous she was a blur, but when she sang her half-dozens songs, the crowd loved her. She sang a variety of songs, including some things from Joan Baez's records early on, and I gave her some guitar lessons, but I sure didn't teach her what she wound up doing later on! (Not that I don't like blues, it's just that I stink at it!) Here she is (CLICKY), looking very much like when I first met her (this is the cover of her first record, 1964). She ran into Mississippi John Hurt at the 1964 Berkeley Folk Festival and had a chance to pick up some guitar licks from him. She discovered blues, and she went NUTS! And the rest is history! Bonnie Raitt credits Alice Stuart with breaking the "glass ceiling" for women musicians by being one of the first women to front her own band. Alice has been on national television, national concert tours, and has been invited to multiple folk festival. She's constantly working. She resides around Seattle. This thread is of broader interest, however. Mudcat is a large community. I seriously doubt I am the only person on Mudcat that did not understand that "Guest:CS" = Crowsister. Oh, and Tish Hinojosa and Nanci Griffith. But for me, the Holy Trinity of American folksinging women are Anne Hills, Cindy Mangsen, and Priscilla Herdman. But then, how could I forget Sally Rogers and Carla Sciaky? And she may be 95, but Faith Petric can still belt out a song - and I have always enjoyed the singing of Jean Ritchie. Come to think of it, there are lots and lots of others. I could be typing this list all day.
