Subject: RE: Female Folk Vocalists of Distinction From: GUEST,SylviaN Date: 01 Apr 10 - 08:21 AM Greg, absolutely agree with you about False Hare. Helen and Katie are two very delightful young women, who are working their socks off at the Kit and Cutter club to spread the news about our wonderful music to people of their own age. They are going to be booked at the Derby Gaol (DHTMC) next year. Cheers Sylvia |
Subject: RE: Female Folk Vocalists of Distinction From: GUEST,Shimrod Date: 01 Apr 10 - 07:24 AM The list I provided on your last thread, CS. But here are some recorded examples: Alison McMorland: 'Cloudberry Day' (The Tradition Bearers Series, LTCD 1003, 2000). Ellen Mitchell: 'On Yonder Lea' (The Tradition Bearers Series, LTCD 1008, 2002). Frankie Armstrong: 'Lovely on the Water' (Fellside FECD 151, 2000). Julie Murphy's contribution to the the Mellstock Band's CD, 'Songs of Thomas Hardy's Wessex' (Saydisc CD-SDL 410, 1995). Mary Humphreys, on the CD which she recorded with Anahata, 'Fenlandia' (Wild Goose Records, WGS 340 CD, 2006). Shan Graebe, on the CD she which recorded with Martin Graebe, 'Dusty Diamonds' (Wildgoose, WGS359CD, 2008). To which I would like to add Annie Dearman's contribution to the CD which she recorded with Vic Gammon and Steve Harrison, 'Black Crow White Crow' (EFDSS CD11, 2005). I also enjoy Shirley Collin's work - but I'm assuming that you're familiar with her extensive recordings? |
Subject: RE: Female Folk Vocalists of Distinction From: greg stephens Date: 01 Apr 10 - 07:19 AM I won't bother listing my old classic favourites, which would be pretty predictable anyway. But here is the best of the bunch of the new folkies I have heard in the last year or three. A rather rough recording of False Hare at Glastonbury 09 rough, but you'll get the idea. False Hare are Helen Morris(on the left) and Katie Weatherall on the right. |
Subject: RE: Female Folk Vocalists of Distinction From: Richard Bridge Date: 01 Apr 10 - 06:47 AM Do my eyes deceive me? NO mention yet of the late English goddess of blues, JO-Ann Kelly? As her record sleeve blurb has it - "the voice of Memphis Minnie, the guitar playing of Mississippi Fred McDowell and the appearance of a shy English primary school teacher". I was listening yesterday to the compilation "Black Rat Swing" of her stuff that Castle put out and I had remembered that she was good but forgotten just how great she truly was. |

Subject: RE: Female Folk Vocalists of Distinction From: catspaw49 Date: 01 Apr 10 - 06:29 AM Geeziz......Has no one mentioned Emmylou? I'm not getting into any "folk" discussion here but if I have a choice as to who I hear do Carter Family stuff and the like that is the voice I want to hear. And in country she brought back the original music almost single handededly. Emmylou Spaw |

Subject: RE: Female Folk Vocalists of Distinction From: Kevin Sexton Date: 01 Apr 10 - 05:32 AM Well, somebody has to put a word in for Margaret Barry !!! Once you fight your way past the Cork accent, a most distinctive voice and stirring singing. 'My Lagan Love' still makes my spine tingle after nearly 40 years. But if you like your 'folk' Kate-Rusby-style, then pass on to the next suggestion. |

Subject: RE: Female Folk Vocalists of Distinction From: Betsy Date: 01 Apr 10 - 03:44 AM I'm a great lover of the voices of June Tabor and Maddy Prior , but how Barbara Dickson and Isla St Clare have been missed from this thread is completely beyond me.I think there should also be room for Rosie Hardman. To hear Barbara Dickson or Maddy sing - without PA /microphones have been the most musically pleasurable in my life. For those who migh associate these ladies with main stream entertainment I would remind or remark that all four ladies are wonderful exponents of British Traditional Song and music. Cheers Betsy |
Subject: RE: Female Folk Vocalists of Distinction From: theleveller Date: 01 Apr 10 - 03:27 AM Here's Lucy Ward singing Mike Waterson's A stitch in Time, lucy ward Lucy has an amazing voice that brought me out in goose bumps the first time I heard her and, for an 18-year old, a brilliant stage presence that has the audience eating out of her hand. Lucy was a finalist in last year's Young Folk Musician awards and, in my opinion, should have won. |
Subject: RE: Female Folk Vocalists of Distinction From: VirginiaTam Date: 01 Apr 10 - 03:18 AM Can't believe no one has mentioned my heroine! Odetta - singing a Negro "field blues" Odetta - Gallows Pole Odetta - Timber, Jerry the Mule Odetta - She Moved Through the Fair Odetta - Carry It Home To Rosie I know some of them are blues but she was considered a folk artist. |
Subject: RE: Female Folk Vocalists of Distinction From: GUEST Date: 01 Apr 10 - 01:27 AM There was an Irish band called Deanta, now defunct I believe. Their lead singer, Mary Dillon, could make you weak at the knees. Her rendition of "Lone Shanakyle" captured the desolation and fury of the great Irish famine, with "bodies lying pile upon pile"..unforgettable voice. |
Subject: RE: Female Folk Vocalists of Distinction From: Suzy T. Date: 01 Apr 10 - 01:07 AM Some of these have already been named, but not all: Frankie Armstrong; Jane Voss; Kate Brislin; Alice Gerrard; Jeanie McLerie (formerly Darlington); Hazel Dickens; Sally Rogers; Jean Ritchie; Claudia Schmidt; Laurel Bliss; Norma Waterson. |
Subject: RE: Female Folk Vocalists of Distinction From: Janie Date: 31 Mar 10 - 10:30 PM And then there is Alice Gerrard (she and Hazel, as many of you know, were fine together,) and Alice has done a lot of other wonderful music since then. Click on the top link on this google page to hear "Agate Hill", one of my favorite of her more recent songs. Her website offers a sample of one song from each of the many albums she has recorded, solo and with many others. |
Subject: RE: Female Folk Vocalists of Distinction From: Don Firth Date: 31 Mar 10 - 08:47 PM No breathy, little girl voice here. Alice Stuart. I've known this gal since she first came into one of Seattle's coffeehouses back around 1961, fresh out of high school. So nervous she was a blur, but when she sang her half-dozens songs, the crowd loved her. She sang a variety of songs, including some things from Joan Baez's records early on, and I gave her some guitar lessons, but I sure didn't teach her what she wound up doing later on! (Not that I don't like blues, it's just that I stink at it!) Here she is (CLICKY), looking very much like when I first met her (this is the cover of her first record, 1964). She ran into Mississippi John Hurt at the 1964 Berkeley Folk Festival and had a chance to pick up some guitar licks from him. She discovered blues, and she went NUTS! And the rest is history! Bonnie Raitt credits Alice Stuart with breaking the "glass ceiling" for women musicians by being one of the first women to front her own band. Alice has been on national television, national concert tours, and has been invited to multiple folk festival. She's constantly working. She resides around Seattle. She's a "take no prisoners" kind of singer! She's all over YouTube. Here's a start: Fasten your seat belt! Don Firth P. S. Here's Alice's MySpace page: CLICKY. |

Subject: RE: Female Folk Vocalists of Distinction From: Allan C. Date: 31 Mar 10 - 07:10 PM A new favorite of mine is Kathy Mattea. You can see her here singing Billy Edd Wheeler's "Redwinged Blackbird". She has a remarkable reserved power in her voice - the sort that lets you know she could rumble the rafters if she chose to do so. By the way, she will be one of the featured artists at The Common Ground on the Hill 2010 Festival in Westminster, Maryland. (Follow the link at the bottom of the page to a PDF of the festival poster. |
Subject: RE: Female Folk Vocalists of Distinction From: Janie Date: 31 Mar 10 - 07:08 PM Crowsister, While those who are often posting to the same threads as you may know that CS=Crowsister, I did not until Joe posted. I am a frequent poster to Mudcat, and read both above and below the line daily. However, I do not often follow the threads that a quick read reveals it is something that seems to be pretty exclusively about the ins and outs of the UK traditional/folk scene. This thread is of broader interest, however. Mudcat is a large community. I seriously doubt I am the only person on Mudcat that did not understand that "Guest:CS" = Crowsister. Thanks for this thread, btw, I am greatly enjoying following the links. |

Subject: RE: Female Folk Vocalists of Distinction From: Joe Offer Date: 31 Mar 10 - 05:46 PM I've had a major crush on Janet Russell since I saw her at Whitby several years ago. I could also develop major crushes on Debra Cowan and Judy Cook, but don't tell them... I really love the singing of Geordeanna McCullough, and I really ought to mention Jean Redpath. And yes, Ray Fisher is absolutely wonderful. As for American folksingers who actually make many, I'd be remiss if I don't mention Iris Dement and Michelle Shocked. Oh, and Tish Hinojosa and Nanci Griffith. But for me, the Holy Trinity of American folksinging women are Anne Hills, Cindy Mangsen, and Priscilla Herdman. But then, how could I forget Sally Rogers and Carla Sciaky? And she may be 95, but Faith Petric can still belt out a song - and I have always enjoyed the singing of Jean Ritchie. Come to think of it, there are lots and lots of others. I could be typing this list all day. I tried to avoid mentioning singers that had already been named, but I see that some people posted some of my favorites while I was typing my list. -Joe- |
