Subject: RE: Folklore: Pace Egging From: Dave the Gnome Date: 02 Apr 10 - 03:12 PM I have a copy from the esteemed Dr Cass himself - A splendid chap with a mine of information at his figertips. A wonderful tome. Buy it now. (Send me the advertising fees later, Eddie) Unfortunately one of the listed plays (Abram) is not going ahead this year due to lack of venues, performers and enthusiasm:-( If any young (or not so young) men of Wigan or thereabouts want to ensure it is resurected next year get in touch. BTW - Manchester St Georges day event is looking for traditional acts if anyone want to put a put the play on in Albert Square. Not got the details to hand but they are easily found on t'interweb. Cheers DeG |

Subject: Folklore: Pace Egging From: Les in Chorlton Date: 02 Apr 10 - 07:00 AM This is always worth a visit: Northwestfolk UK How do we feel about: "I recommend that you read Eddie Cass's The Lancashire Pace–Egg Play: a social history (FLS Publications, 2001). Dr Cass finds that the pace (or peace) egg play, featuring such combative characters as St George, Bold Slasher, Hector, Beelzebub and (perhaps most obscurely) The King of Egypt, arose in the county's cotton towns in the 1840s" Best wishes L in C |
