According to Clarice Shelor the piano player on the Blackard/Shelor Family recording it was an instrumental but the A&R man wanted lyrics so Dad Blackard I believe it was came up with the words you see in Padre's posting.

I've just come across these words from Cecil Sharp's Appalachian collection, sung to the second part of the tune (the high part). Singer Lucy Cannady, Endicott, VA, 22/8/1918:

Sandy River bells keep jingling, jingling [x3]
I've got no use for Sandy River Bells
