Wahdda' pair of goofs! Drive 800 miles, can't find a damn motel going either direction (reservations would have been useful, but I'm catspaw and, uh....), spend a minor fortune on the tackiest strip on this continent........and for what??? To be bored to death by two of the dullest and least entertaining dimbulbs I have ever had the singular displeasure of having met!!! Now I'm dog tired, broke, the mileage is getting high on my van.........AND........ we're here at home with big smiles and a sense of happiness, warmth, and friendship that makes life not only worth living, but worth treasuring and hording away in that secret little room in your heart.
Rick did a fine job describing the day and an even better job in describing a feeling of "valued friends...just met." The feeling is mutual. I think Rick and I were pretty much what we expected each other to be and the same guys you all know here on the 'Cat. For those of you who expected something different from either of us....Sorry. But THERE IS one that's worth mentioning here that is a bit entertaining.
Rick and I have a lot of similarities in childhoods, interests, general demeanor, etc. This probably shocks no one. We have had differing career paths, but at this stage in our lives, we see the world (and it probably sees us) in very similar ways. BUT...I think we married the same spouse!!!
Heather and Karen could not be more unalike in physical appearance......and that's about where the differences end. Both are intelligent, quietly humorous, of similar family background (specifically as to how they were/are viewed by their respective families), excellent conversationalists, but very shy! The fact that both of them married and tolerate completely eccentric assholes is a given. We left them in a souveneir joint to grab a seat in a beer garden and basically neither bought a thing! When they were with us, both were wonderful and talkative, but alone they were too shy to think of what to say to each other. Let me know if I'm wrong Heather and Rick, but that's what I saw (and heard afterward......"Gee, I really liked Heather! I just never know what to say until I've been around someone for awhile. I get kind of embarrassed, you know?"...). Perhaps that shyness is a necessary feature when married to a ....uh,hmm.....well, whatever we are. I do know that Karen looks forward to knowing and seeing Heather more but "hates to be pushy and blah....blah....blah..."
We talked of the'Cat, plans, homes, futures, and all the normal things and the air was filled with conversation and I have hundreds more questions for them. But one other point, and I'll shut up.....well, at least in this post. Many years ago I read some truism (it struck me) about a companionship of silence that only good friends can enjoy. Believe it or not 'Catters, there were times when verbage did NOT fill the air....and they too were comfortable times for me. I guess I judge friendships on that basis too. From the first hug til the parting one, it was a lovely, fun, memorable day.......and we'll get together again...and again...and again.....I believe this one is set up for years.
Thanks Heather and Rick for a fine time in a "foreign land.".....I get to a Cracker Barrel at 9:30 for supper and when I reach for change, I find my pocket full of funny money!!!! Maybe I'll throw it in the Monopoly game.......
