Actually the Tipster got her name from cow tipping while in college. This sport ended abruptly for her when another student approached from behind and tipped HER, claiming he thought she was a Holstein.

Rick, in answer to your question the banjo in the picture is a Kingston. The resonator has been removed so that I can use it in our Civil War reenacting activities. I have another one that is steel strung with a resonator. It is a Ridgeland. Also in the collection is the homemade lap dulcimer, a Harmony six string, a Kay six string, and a Guild six string electric, all dating from the late fifties to early sixties. My guitar playing is non existent, and the banjo playing is 'coming along'.

Speaking of tiple, it is a little-known piece of trivia that Tiples was the name chosen by George Washington for one of his dogs.

Kat and Mick----in many ways you were there....'cause we talked about your ass!!....real nasty stuff too...heh,heh,heh,heh.

And Knockers.......yeah,you're right..Rick is a piece of work alright........Whose or what kind, I have no idea.

And Father Joe....Rick has only brought that up 19 times and apologized for being ill..........Well he brought it up literally about 5 times at the concert and 14 on the threads. Are you having a relapse their Joebro? If you strum a bit on that tiple you got at the Center, additional treatment may not be required!

And sorry, but Rick has blown up the possums bung friends. Pictures will be forthcoming.

The one thing I don't like about this is that we were going to use the possum as bait to draw Rick to the FSGW Getaway. Why don't you come anyway, Rick? After all, you were, er.... "indisposed" when you were supposed to be visiting with people during your last trip to Washington. Gee, I hardly got a chance to say "boo" to you and Heather, and then you disappeared. It wasn't until this thread that I found out what happened....

Well speaking for Daddy Duckboots I can catagorically refute that any of us were appalled when we met Rick for the first time 3 days before the Wedding. Confused no but amused well maybe, but delighted that she had found such a man as this, such a piece of work etc . Not everyone can be so fortunate as to hit payload, diamonds are certainly a girls best friend. I would love to have met The Spaw and Karen maybe they could come to Blackpool for comparison purposes.

Well, this really sucks!!!!!! Go away for a few days to a wonderful wedding for the daughter of the banjo player in my band and find that these two maniacs have gotten together and I wasn't there..............probably better that I wasn't cause Canada wouldn't be the same.........come to think of it, it probably never will anyway...............I am envious as hell. Glad you two had a good time......I still wish Rick could come along for the FSGW gathering with us, Spaw.

Dear paddy,

This is the 'Cat and math too is traditional here. Therefore a "couple" often equals 1, or possibly three. To put it in mathematical terms:

If 2=1 and is F, then 4=1 and is P....the domain is 6-1 times F divided by P with the subsets of 7 being 4.96397, 1.59356. and 1.39268. If we then take a constant of pi with a value of 3.14159 added to the value of (FxP) to the 11th power and divide by the square root of Joe Offer (he has one I'm told) and then cross multiply the number of posts in the condom thread by the miles from Bremen, Ohio to Niagra we can set up an equation and differentiate under the equal sign and yield an answer of either <42 or >42 with an error factor of 97.815%. Unless of course the value of pi is 2.75 which is what I paid for a piece of it at Cracker Barrel...then we must recalculate.

I hope this has been helpful and enlightening.

Sounds like a great awakening, but I'm curious. Just how does one go about having a "singular displeasure" when meeting "two of the dimest and least entertaining dimbulbs"? Is that part of the new math, or is that now passe?

1) Thank you Joe or whomever for fixing the posting problem.

2)Karen's Mom (mawinlaw) asked me what I meant by similar family views. Well, probably a lot of things, but I think both families are confused/amused/apalled that their child would marry someone like Rick or myself, for example.

Hey....Would you want your kid to marry someone like me???

Wahdda' pair of goofs! Drive 800 miles, can't find a damn motel going either direction (reservations would have been useful, but I'm catspaw and, uh....), spend a minor fortune on the tackiest strip on this continent........and for what??? To be bored to death by two of the dullest and least entertaining dimbulbs I have ever had the singular displeasure of having met!!! Now I'm dog tired, broke, the mileage is getting high on my van.........AND........ we're here at home with big smiles and a sense of happiness, warmth, and friendship that makes life not only worth living, but worth treasuring and hording away in that secret little room in your heart.

Rick did a fine job describing the day and an even better job in describing a feeling of "valued friends...just met." The feeling is mutual. I think Rick and I were pretty much what we expected each other to be and the same guys you all know here on the 'Cat. For those of you who expected something different from either of us....Sorry. But THERE IS one that's worth mentioning here that is a bit entertaining.

Rick and I have a lot of similarities in childhoods, interests, general demeanor, etc. This probably shocks no one. We have had differing career paths, but at this stage in our lives, we see the world (and it probably sees us) in very similar ways. BUT...I think we married the same spouse!!!

Heather and Karen could not be more unalike in physical appearance......and that's about where the differences end. Both are intelligent, quietly humorous, of similar family background (specifically as to how they were/are viewed by their respective families), excellent conversationalists, but very shy! The fact that both of them married and tolerate completely eccentric assholes is a given. We left them in a souveneir joint to grab a seat in a beer garden and basically neither bought a thing! When they were with us, both were wonderful and talkative, but alone they were too shy to think of what to say to each other. Let me know if I'm wrong Heather and Rick, but that's what I saw (and heard afterward......"Gee, I really liked Heather! I just never know what to say until I've been around someone for awhile. I get kind of embarrassed, you know?"...). Perhaps that shyness is a necessary feature when married to a ....uh,hmm.....well, whatever we are. I do know that Karen looks forward to knowing and seeing Heather more but "hates to be pushy and blah....blah....blah..."

We talked of the'Cat, plans, homes, futures, and all the normal things and the air was filled with conversation and I have hundreds more questions for them. But one other point, and I'll shut up.....well, at least in this post. Many years ago I read some truism (it struck me) about a companionship of silence that only good friends can enjoy. Believe it or not 'Catters, there were times when verbage did NOT fill the air....and they too were comfortable times for me. I guess I judge friendships on that basis too. From the first hug til the parting one, it was a lovely, fun, memorable day.......and we'll get together again...and again...and again.....I believe this one is set up for years.

Thanks Heather and Rick for a fine time in a "foreign land.".....I get to a Cracker Barrel at 9:30 for supper and when I reach for change, I find my pocket full of funny money!!!! Maybe I'll throw it in the Monopoly game.......

Thanks for your report, Rick. I was dying to hear about the historic meeting between two of my favorite people (neither of whom I've had the privilege of meeting yet! It's really neat that we are having opportunities to see in the flesh those we are coming to love in the spirit.

best to all four,

Subject: Duckboots & Karen too!
From: Rick Fielding
Date: 08 Aug 99 - 11:54 AM

Meeting Mudcatters has turned 1999 into a memorable one for Heather and I. It started of course with a gang of "Cats" in Washington, and were I not throwing up and inspecting the porcelain at close range, I'd have gotten a chance to sing a few chorus songs with 'em. Well, maybe next time. Since then we've met Steve Latimer, Bill Sables, and Mike Strobel, as well as doing some hanging out with locals like Peter T, Tony Burns, Michael Miland, Jeremiah McCaw, Rana, and Paul Mills. Well, yesterday we met "THE 'SPAW"!

I tried to pick a meeting place that would be appropriate to Catspaw's style and sense of humour, so outside the "House of Frankenstein Wax Museum and Cotton Candy Emporium" it was. This is situated on possibly the tackiest street in North America - Clifton Hill, in Niagara Falls Canada. Heather said it reminded her of vacations in Blackpool England, with all the souvenir stores, rides, restaurants and general chaos!

In a nutshell, we had a great time, "Paw" and Karen are wonderful, caring and humourous people. Do you know the kind of folks that feel like they've been your valued friends for years - and you've just met 'em? That's them. We had a great meal at "Mama Somebody's" restaurant. (It seems that every Italian restaurant in the Falls has somebody's "Mama" in the kitchen doing the cooking!) We took a LONG walk along the side of the Falls (got soaked) and I carried Karen's heavy purse (proving that I'm a "new man" comfortable with my feminine side!!) and Catspaw carried the small musical instrument of questionable taste that I presented to him. (he can tell you about it if he wants - I always called it "Freud's Marracca".) Oh and by the way.. he brought his ceramic possum to show us (great job Barbara Blessings) and now it is truly international.

I even broke down and joined the others in a couple of astonishingly over-priced beers (that's 12 for me this year - a record). An American, in the beer line ahead of us was yelling SHEEEIT! $7.50 for two little glasses of beer? SHEEEEIT!! The pleasant bar maid said right back "and that'll be a $10 deposit on the glasses!" He got the joke and smiled. It's a rip-off, but that's what tourist towns are supposed to be.

We had a wonderful afternoon. The Pattersons are great people. Thanks again Mudcat.

Rick (and Duckboots)
