Subject: Songs for a Wedding From: Marie27 Date: 05 Apr 10 - 04:55 PM Hi Folks I am looking for some suggestions for two songs we can sing at my wedding in four weeks time in a woodland ceremony. The first song will be sung by an ancient oak tree, and the second after we have said some words to each other. We are looking for something loving / suitable, easy to sing (for non-folkies), with a chorus or repeating line, with a 'cheery' tune. So any suggestions would be brilliant. Thanks Marie (Titch) mhlum@hotmail.com sheilalumchina@gmail.com (Mum's!) |
Subject: RE: Songs for a Wedding From: GUEST,JB3 Date: 06 Apr 10 - 12:31 AM Hi Marie27, You are probably aware that there are many more sad love-songs in traditional music than there are happy ones. ("Sorry the Day I was Married", comes to mind!) "Eileen A-Roon" is pretty, but most appropriate if you're of Irish descent. And it doesn't have a refrain that repeats. "Roseville Fair" would be more appropriate for the reception. ("Here's a glass to all true lovers...") In reading over your post again, I see that you probably meant "beside" an oak tree, not that the oak tree would be singing! (interesting image!) Best Wishes to You Both! |
Subject: RE: Songs for a Wedding From: GUEST,Ana Date: 06 Apr 10 - 01:54 AM I put up almost exactly the same query 2 days ago, and....sob....only got one reply. Thanks Steve. Funny how the mind can just go to mush when faced with having to choose something so important. I have a sterling repertoire of 'wrist-slitters' all of which I think very beautiful but not appropriate! Wondering about 'the Snows they Melt the Soonest'? If you help Marie, you can help us both - two for the price of one! Cheers Ana |
Subject: RE: Songs for a Wedding From: Suegorgeous Date: 06 Apr 10 - 07:52 PM But plenty of suggestions on a third thread on the same topic..... http://mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=119602&messages=32 |
Subject: RE: Songs for a Wedding From: SylviaN Date: 07 Apr 10 - 03:28 AM Certainly were a lot of suggestions on Suegorgeous's thread above. In case you don't want to look at it, this is the one I made. "At my neice's wedding, Keith and I sang the song both the Copper's Wedding song and the one that he and Lynne Heraud recorded - A Passionate Shepherd to his love, or otherwise known as "Come live with me and be my love" (from their "Stars in my crown" CD - words by Christopher Marlowe and tune by Lynne)." What I missed out on that occasion was that, when I started singing "Come live with me and be my love", I burst into tears about half a verse in - and someone was videoing the whole thing. Well, it's an Aunt's perogative to cry at her Niece's wedding! Cheers Sylvia |

Subject: RE: Songs for a Wedding From: Nigel Parsons Date: 07 Apr 10 - 12:19 PM Here's to the couple Translation by JPete Seeger. I've heard it done by the Spinners, and quite effective, also totally non-denominational (suitable for secular joinings) (search for the title as 'find on page') Cheers Nigel |
Subject: RE: Songs for a Wedding From: GUEST,Andrew Date: 07 Apr 10 - 12:21 PM Wedding Song - Bob Dylan from Planet Waves |
Subject: RE: Songs for a Wedding From: GUEST,Two of a Hind Date: 08 Apr 10 - 06:23 AM May I suggest New Seasons Love by Dave Webber, he wrote this song as a gift for a friends wedding |
Subject: RE: Songs for a Wedding From: Herga Kitty Date: 08 Apr 10 - 06:06 PM IIRC, New Season's Love was written for Tom McConville's wedding. The Wedding Song (Come Write Me Down)definitely meets Marie's spec for something loving / suitable, easy to sing (for non-folkies), with a chorus or repeating line, with a 'cheery' tune. Kitty |
Subject: RE: Songs for a Wedding From: GUEST Date: 09 Apr 10 - 04:07 PM Cheers Kitty - any idea how/where I can get to listen to New Season's Love? The title is lovely! |
Subject: RE: Songs for a Wedding From: Sheila China Date: 13 Apr 10 - 06:33 PM well actually from Sheila her daughter - I searched under 'come write me down' and found 2 offered 0.7967 this was the traditional one I knew. I haven't searched for a long time and now there was a window on the right where you could hear snippets of the Copper Family singing part of the track and also In the Harmony way singing a similar clip. then you can pay in dollars and download the full MP3 track. oh the wonders of the modern internet. At the bottom of the words there is still the old style notes to get the basic tune Anyway thank you Kitty |
Subject: RE: Songs for a Wedding From: Herga Kitty Date: 13 Apr 10 - 06:46 PM Guest - New Season's Love is on Dave and Anni's "Away from it all" CD, as listed here Kitty |
Subject: RE: Songs for a Wedding From: GUEST Date: 13 Apr 10 - 06:51 PM John Denver recorded one that starts"Today as the blossoms still cling to the vine". I think it might be just called "Today". Worth looking for, it a great Wedding song |
Subject: RE: Songs for a Wedding From: Genie Date: 14 Apr 10 - 03:38 PM Actually, I don't think some of the lyrics of "Today" really suit a wedding. (I think Randy Sparks wrote it, didn't he, BTW.) Tom Paxton's "Outward Bound" is a great wedding song. (He may have even written it for a wedding.) Outward Bound (cover) The lyrics and chords are shown too. Nana Mouskouri does a wonderful job on this song too, but all I can find at YT is her recording of "En Partant" (the French version of the lyrics) Here's another excellent wedding song: "(I'd Be Me) Just Loving You". (The video is blurry because it's from a thumbnail, but the audio is fine. This is a cover of a song by a group whose name I'm blanking on at the moment. It's something like "The Kanes.") And Tom Paxton has another very good song for weddings: Home To Me Is Anywhere You Are I'll post the lyrics in a separate thread. Genie |

Subject: Lyr Add: SWEET BRIDE (Kate Rusby) From: Commander Crabbe Date: 22 Apr 10 - 05:13 PM We walked up the isle to this one SWEET BRIDE : (Kate Rusby) A lady was walking on a midsummer's day The birds they were whistling so merrily and gay When along came a white steed in the finest array And it carried a young man these words he did say Chorus Come live by the great moon That rules the strong tide Climb up on my horse love And be my sweet bride I bid you good morning, this young man did say And where might you be going on such a nice day I'm walking to view sir the bonny blue sea For it's all I have left now that means much to me Chorus If that's all you love now, come riding with me You'll live in my castle deep under the sea You'll sleep in my gold bed, my fine silken sheets And have gifts of great beauty from all that you meet Chorus She's up in the saddle and away they did ride The horse skipped and danced over waves on the tide Now she's only remembered by this story I tell From an old man on horseback who once knew her well CC /thread.cfm?threadid=38087 |
Subject: RE: Songs for a Wedding From: topical tom Date: 23 Apr 10 - 09:36 AM Though not technically wedding songs, I would recommend Tom Paxton's "I Want to Dance a Slow Dance With You" or "Waltz in the Kitchen With You"?I'm not sure of the title. Another great song is his "Home is Anywhere You Are". |

Subject: Lyr Add: EDGE OF THE WHITE ROCK / BRUACH NA CARRAI From: mg Date: 27 Apr 10 - 12:07 AM http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3nWbIXz6u4s Not easy but very beautiful. From the Blasket Islands of Ireland..where I am suspecting my ggm might have come from. mg The Edge of The White Rock (Bruach na Carraige Baine) (Brook nah kar-ig-aah bawn- ah) This beautiful love song originates from the Blasket Islands off the coast of Corca Dhuibhne in southwest Kerry. A great deal of music has come to us from these six small islands during the last century, much of it is believed to be rooted in much older traditions of this close knit community.

Subject: Lyr Add: I'LL SAIL NO MORE (Bryan Bedford) From: Black belt caterpillar wrestler Date: 27 Apr 10 - 07:24 AM Anne and I sing this one occasionally: I'LL SAIL NO MORE by Bryan Bedford Moored to this ring I will not drift Anchored here I'll stay Within the shelter of your arms Watch the ebb-tide drift away The tide may wait for no man But this man sails no more I've found what I was seeking on this shore. chorus: I'll sail no more, though breezes blow I'll stay becalmed within these waters, I won't go away I'll sail no more, my search is through For the wonder that I found I found was you. Moored to this ring I will not drift Here I'll make my bed Within the shelter of your arms Bound by the words we've said The light that shines within your eyes To guide me safely safely here The harbor light of blinding white, I will be near. chorus: I'll sail no more, though breezes blow I'll stay becalmed within these waters, I won't go away I'll sail no more, my search is through For the wonder that I found I found was you. Moored to this ring I will not drift I'll step onto this quay I'll hold the hand that rules this land Your landsman I will be And though the skies may darken When storm clouds hide your face Know that I am with you, I've found my place. chorus: I'll sail no more, though breezes blow I'll stay becalmed within these waters, I won't go away I'll sail no more, my search is through For the wonder that I found I found was you. |
