One Row Melodeon enthusiasts might like to check out this new site, which is dedicated to promoting the One Row, its Music & Players.

Did you spend any time at all working out whether it was actually necessary?

Why not just a permathread here? Is there such a frenzy of postings about one-row melodeons that the rest of Mudcat is clamouring for them all to bugger off to their own site?

"POST MP3s of your own One Row Melodeon Music
POST VIDEOS of you playing your own One Row Melodeon Music
POST PHOTOS of your musical One Row Melodeon experiences and instruments."

... a facility currently beyond the capability of Mudcat...

Aye exactly Foolestroupe & I'm sure if Jack had actually bothered to check out the new site, he would have noticed those extra facilities for himself. ;-)
Cheers

I think Jack's criticism was just a little unkind.

If you are interested, it's worth a try. If there is demand the forum will fly, if there is not the demand it will die of its own accord.

What's wrong with melodeon.net ?
There's plenty of discussion of 1-rows there.

You can't post videos and MP3s directly, but everybody there uses YouTube and similar for that.

Anahata, there is of course absolutely nothing wrong with melodeon.net ..... it will of course, always be the first port of call for all Melodeon enthusiasts! I can assure you that Theo has absolutely nothing to fear, from this little colourful addition to the scene!

All this new site is doing, is hopefully helping to raise the profile of the One Row Melodeon itself, just a little, by providing a colourful & friendly setting for members photos, mp3s & videos.

There is a growing interest in the One Row, certainly here in Ireland, especially with the news that the first ever One Row classes are coming to Willie Week this year!
However, there are of course strong musical traditions of its use in various other parts of Europe & North America too, so I feel confident that there is plenty of scope for this new site.

Personally speaking, I know a little about the Irish tradition, but very little about the English one & even less than that about its use in French, Quebecois & Cajun music, so I'm hoping the site's members will help me learn lots more & I'm sure I'll find the development of this site very interesting ........ & my guess is, I'm not alone.

However, as Tootler says, if there is an interest for this site it will grow, if not .... it won't.

No harm in trying though ... eh?

Cheers
Dick

Fair enough. Good luck with it. I might even sign up...
We have 4 of them in the house, 5 if you count the £20 Chinese toy, so I think I qualify...

Thanks, I'm hoping the site will be especially useful for beginners ..... like meself!

Does that £20 one make your collection a ...... 'Chinese' half dozen then? :-)

Cheers
Dick

Ah - the old Chinese toys. Mine was useful when I was learning - bought in the Suq in Dubai, 1978, very cheap, but it died long ago. (I couldn't get my hands on a real one until I came home on leave)

If not whats the diff? And can I gain any insite into these two instruments from your site?

You want melodeon.net for that discussion, and the one-row site for ... well, one row stuff only.

Yes, in the UK they are both melodeons. When they get fully chromatic some people call them accordions, but some other people call a 1 row an accordion. Everyone draws the line in different places.

Can melodeons make any other row?

Is my one row Key of C Hohner Viennese button box a Melodeon?

As Anahata says, it depends on where you are. In Oz, only the single-row button boxes tend to be called melodeons and, even then, many people will think the name refers only to the ones with the 'cotton reel' variably-voiced versions; the others are often regarded as button accordeons. Diatonic button boxes with more than one row are (in Oz) routinely called button accordeons, as are the Continental system chromatic versions.

Cheers, Rowan

Yes, it's been down for a wahile. The owner gave up on it, despite the appearance of it being a thriving site.

melodeon.net is still the online place to be for diatonic squeezers of all persuasions. One row, two row, two and a half row, three row chromatic (J.Shand etc.) all welcome. Steirische button boxes even get the occasional mention.
