On Youtube, Deep dark Woods perform a song, I think it's called Hang Me, it's about hanging anyway. Anyone know where this song is from, are there any more verses, any info would be helpful. Sorry don't know how to link. Thanks.

Know nothing about the song. But what a good group of musicians. And what a stupid vid. Or maybe I'm just too old ... ?

This reminds me of a version I learned from a friend in BC. He learned it from a group on Vancouver Island but I can't remember who, and he's gone now so I can't ask him:

Hang me, oh hang me, I'll be dead and gone
Hang me, oh hang me, I'll be dead and gone
I don't mind the hangin', boys, but I been in the jail so long,
Lord I've been all around this world.

Mama and papa and little sister makes three
Mama and papa and little sister makes three
They've all come to see me hangin' from a gallows tree
Lord I've been all around this world.

Apparently the Grateful Dead did a version of this but I've never heard it. There are quite a few more lyrics on Mudcat, just search for "hang me I'll be dead and gone." You could probably adapt some of the lyrics you find for their version.

By the way I really like Deep Dark Woods version.

It's so deliciously macabre.

Dave Van Ronk does a similar song (Hang Me, Oh Hang Me) on Inside Dave Van Ronk.

That video put me in mind of Tom Petty and Mudcrutch (Shady Grove, etc.) Good sounding group. Thanks!

I think the Dead's version was titled "Been All Around This World."

This song has been recorded by virtually everybody; but it doesn't have fixed lyrics, just a whole lot of "zipper verses" that people arrange more or less as they please; so there's no "definitive" version.

P.
