Adler? Oh yes. I was an Adlerite for probably most of its existence. Maybe 1975 through 1995.

I have all sorts of video from Adler House..... the concerts at the house itself and the birthday (and other) concerts at the Legion Hall. In fact, the very first video I ever shot was up at Adler. We set up an AC powered home VCR and my cumbersome two piece camera and recorded Big Al and the City Slickers. After the concert, as I recall we all sat in the coat closet in the back of the listening room where the VCR was and watched the whole thing. The concept of recording a concert at Adler was new back then and everyone was fascinated to see the playback. I even have one of me and Jim Tibenski up there that I'll probably decide to post.

I'm gonna bury YouTube ;) But it will take a while so be patient.

The painting you are talking about was one of several by NED BRODERICK that were exhibited at the No Exit during those years. I recall an amazing one he did of a fellow with a needle in his arm and a nuclear explosion being detonated in his brain. Back then, all of Ned's work was absolutely striking and vivid. I seem to remember that he got famous for his work. Ned's Viet Nam experiences were being dealt with in many of his paintings then.

I've not heard of Ned since the 1980s. But I'm sure Google would find him...

Great to see Anne too - in their cd, the mix just about dropped Jan out, nice to hear their harmonies on your vids.
We lived in OP back then, but tried to keep up with the just-as-great post '60's scene. Any vids of Redhead or Mike Dunbar?

That would be interesting. I have one from the GBSDF also and have not looked at it yet so I don't know what is on it. Probably a big surprise ;)

I've just finished capturing the 1983 Adler Birthday concert so those will be up in the coming days. Vintage Phil and Margaret stuff (pre-Paul), along with Thomas and Deline and Rob Strom among others. The yellow footlights gave it an unearthly ghostly look......

LOL. My kid lives in Toledo. We go there all the time. (Annually.)Of course if we ever get up your way that will prob. turn out to be the weekend you go back to visit Chi "one more time." But we did think we might vacay MI next summer.

Just to let you know, watching the videos is going to have to wait, for me (aaaaarggghhh!). The LR puder has a nasty, dark old monitor that needs to be replaced, but decent speakers. The home office one upstairs has no speakers but a good small flat panel for eye candy, but it distorts (narrows) the screen view. The old laptop may or may not handle Youtube, and I gotta unpack it and set it up, but now we're into the weekend of services (our band plays for the one tonight)....

So please don't take my hesitation as lack of interest!

On another hand-- site usage here. The mods get nervous when they see posts without a name in the "From" box. According to the FAQ, a consistent name is appreciated. I should add that that frame grab was from one of the two videos of Stu Halliday I just uploaded. You might want to watch them and see if there are any fleeting glimpses of the painting behind him that might reveal it better. And sometimes seeing it in motion helps to make things out.

So the consensus is that this isn't the picture? Is 1981 perhaps too late? I do remember it, but not where it hung..... although I have a faint memory of it over by the "regulars table" but I may be confusing it with the photo of "The night Joe sold the No Exit to Peter".... it was around there too.

As for never leaving Chicago, I felt that way all my life but ya know..... I like it here in Michigan. We don't have that 70s folk culture here but Michigan is the world dulcimer capitol and since dulcimer is my main instrument these days I do have a community. And Michigan is a beautiful state all in all... we have everything here except mountains and fire ants.

Fred Campeau? Sure. Known him for years and played with him and Mitch in our Christmas band "The More The Merrier" (with Phil Cooper and Margaret Nelson) up until I moved to MI. Matter of fact, I have a No Exit set of his in the wings ready to edit and render and one of TMTM too. Stay tuned again.....

Paul, first-- I'm just stunned that you would even try that for me. Thank you so much.

Second, I think the result shows more than you might have thought. I lightened it up and fooled around with the contrast, and got a bit more detail-- certainly more flavor of the colors. The resulting image I looked at was kinda like a police sketch artist conversation, LOL. It made me remember more details from all those years ago, that I just could not see going along with what did show in that picture. I wanted my sketch artist to make it more gold/orange, more like a halo of light pointing at the central figure..... unless the crowd hazily seen behind the boy was actually more detailed and prominent than I can make myself remember.

So I think this picture is not it, but it made the one in my mind all the clearer, and that's a good thing right there!

Then, I cracked myself up. Most people cannot believe I am 56 because I neither look it nor act it. But I gotta say (imagine a crabby old voice), "Sonny, I think it was before your time!"

?!?!?!?!? So now I'm the geezer! But by God I am still here, and that's not only a good thing right there, too-- it's a downright shock to my senses! Ah is still kickin'!

I tried processing and de-noising the snot out of it but there is so little information to work with that most processing I tried simply wiped out any information in the painting. This is about as good as it is going to get. It was so dark back there that there just isn't enough information there to bring out. This was shot with my very first color camera and it was barely happy in broad daylight. I am simply amazed it got this much in the Exit. After processing, the video doesn't look too bad.

I'm also surprised I had the guts to bring that stuff in there. In 1981, my setup was a two piece camera.... camera and control box.... with a separate video recorder. No batteries either. It all plugged into AC power. I probably only did it because Stu was a friend of mine and I knew he wouldn't mind the intrusion.

Well, it isn't behind the performers in my 1982 video. But there is a largish painting behind the performers in the video from 1981 that I am capturing tonight (Stu Halliday). It is VERY dark and murky because it is in the shadow of the lamp shade and just looking at the video I can't make out much. But with processing I might be able to get to the point that you can at least see enough to decide if it is "your" painting. It is a couple feet square and directly behind the stage at head height.... sound right? Don't hold your breath. But stay tuned.

Do you remember where "your" picture was? Any chance it might be in my line of sight on one of these recordings? I remember it but not where it hung. If it is in any of my videos I can do a frame capture and you might be able to see perhaps a ghostly reminder of it.

I'll have to ponder your words about becoming what we already were. In my case I have always figured it was the opposite. But I guess either is possible.

Paul, I live in a life immersed in ministry very much as you describe.

I have a theory that as we get older, we become more and more the person we always really were-- that all the surface crap gets burnished off until all that is visible is that real person (for good or ill). A bit like Dorian Grey meets the Velveteen Rabbit. Anyway, I say this as my "credential" to assure you that NONE of these people you savor, now, have actually passed out of your life. Trust me-- they're all in there.

At church some folks see empty pews. I see graduations. I see not a building that lacks arrivals. I see a people being teachers.

We get to choose our own viewpoints on all these matters. Look forward to graduating, yourself, knowing how much of YOU is still present in the silly, callow people you know now as the "youngsters." When they get their burnishing, trust me, what will be visible will be, partly, yourself. You see, a good number of them will hang onto those good things as much as I cling to my little cockfighter, and those are the things they will count on and embody as they live their lives.

I see all of this on a weekly basis. It's worth a lot of good-doing to choose to see it that way.


So gogogogoGO! Never mind the details! Just pass on what you have been holding. Set it loose in this world, as quick as you reasonably can.

Memory road is a funny road. I found myself getting sad for a while as I started going through my tapes. Something about all the people that have touched my life and how most of them from back then have gone out of my life. But not all. The older I get them more I think about how I have touched other lives and the ripples that will hopefully continue after I'm done here.

Me, I could tell ya mine, but you would not know it-- I was no one. Just a pudgy, introverted kid behind a big ole mug of cappuccino, trying so hard to be an adult. My big sister lived around the corner, then, and I stayed with her when I went broke and homeless. One night on the way back from work, coming off the El, the music drew me in. A new world, to me. I do not think I had ever gone anywhere socially before in my life, after the usual HS pack activities (McDonald's parking lots in suburbia). I was VERY shy in those years. But I had my first adult crush there.

I followed the music to the Barbarossa, and damn if I didn't make some actual friends there! My next housing foray included a roomie I'd met at the Barbarossa-- who tried to kill me and burn up my dog, one night. She had.... issues. :~) (You could take those risks back then, and mostly get away with them in the folk world at least.)

I'm still looking for a painting I saw behind the No Exit performers that I wish I had been able to buy, then. A large canvas, with an intense boy about to thrust his bird into a cockfight. I still can't afford to BUY it, but I would sure love to SEE it again, even if only via JPEG. The tension, the color, the execution, the loveliness in that setting of all settings-- it made quite an impression. Those eyes!

Aw, Memory Lane is a sweet road to amble on a rainy night. Almost like I could turn the corner, right here up in these PA mountains, and the No Exit door would still be invitingly, musically open. (You really DO never exit.)

:~) Will the Youtube videos open with a coffee hiss racket? Man, I miss that just as much.

Oh, don't worry, I'm go-go-going ;) The pace may slow a bit but I intend to get a large number of these videos up so others can see them. YouTube seems to be the best way until I can run a server at home and stream directly.

Yeah, it seems like a nice friendly place here. Only glitcx is the current tendency for everyone to use screen names. When you are reminiscing with like minded people it is more fun if you can place the people you are talking to. It is the same on a cello BBS I read.... very few people use their real names so you have no idea you are talking to. Maybe I'm just old fashioned..... ;)

Me, I'm Paul Goelz. I lived in Rogers Park from about 1972 through 1976 I think, and frequented the Exit as well as the Lackey's Steak House jams. And lived in Evanston until 1996 when I moved to Michigan. Back then I played banjo, dulcimer and autoharp. Today it is dulcimer and cello. Probably knew a lot of you.....

The Austrians think they invented it! According to our local expert Paul Gifford, that might actually be the case even though many believe it originated in Persia.

Note that there are two different Hackbretts. The more common one has two side bridges and the strings cross in the middle. Each course up each side is a whole step, which makes alternate strings half steps. The Austrian diatonic Hackbrett is arranged like an American hammered dulcimer, although the one I played when I was in Austria was a sixth from treble bridge to bass bridge instead of a fifth or an octave.

Note the difference between that music and the more "oompah" stuff from Germany. I love Austrian music..... it is very delicate.

As for my "impressive set of online videos", you ain't seen nuthin' yet. They have been sitting un-viewed for upwards of 30 years because it was not practical to make them available to anyone. But with the advent of digital video, the internet and affordable equipment to digitize and clean up old VHS recordings, I am embarking on a long term project to capture all of what I have, catalog it and make at least a part of it available on YouTube. I have 40 VHS tapes, each one of which is an average of 2 hours long. The way I am capturing, each hour is 13GB. That is roughly one terabyte of video! Good thing BIG hard drives are affordable, eh?

In those tapes I have at least 8 hours from the No Exit and those were mostly recordings of things like a couple Christmas parties so there were many different performers in a short time span. I have a lot more than that from Adler House up in Libertyville, recorded through the 80s. I have several from the big dulcimer festival in Evart, stuff from Wheatland and one tape from Winfield (might even be the year that Art was there). Somewhere, I have most of a Red Clay Ramblers set at Somebody Else's Troubles (and I have a signed non-commercial release for that one too).

This is going to be a retirement project spanning a couple years, but I'm getting started even though I have not actually retired yet ;) I'm glad to have been able to preserve some of that marvelous culture back when folk was more prevalent than it currently is in the USA.

Paul Goelz here. Just a heads up to anyone interested that I am in the process of digitizing and cleaning up a LOT of VHS videos I shot in the early 1980s in the Chicago area. I am currently working on video from the 2nd No Exit (at the N/E corner of Lunt and Glenwood) and have uploaded some already. If you search YouTube for my username "paulgoelz" you will come up with them as they are uploaded. The particular tape I am working on at present is from the 1981 Christmas party, and has a bunch of familiar faces. Jan and Anne Hills-Burda are processed and waiting to upload tonight. Anyone heard from Dave Porter lately? I have a great version of "What I Need Is A Crisis In My Life" in the processing que. I'd forgotten what a great songwriter he is.

Considering the fact that by 1981 camera standards there was next to no light in there, it is a tribute to modern processing that you can see ANYTHING. But it also slows things to a crawl..... by the time I add de-noising, level correction and mild sharpening, it takes about 15-20 minutes per minute of playing time to process these videos on a dual core 3GHz machine ;)
