Somebody will probably come along with better chording, but if I was doing it, I think I'd keep the same chord all the way to the 'god is nigh' where I'd switch to a quick 4.

In C, that would mean tossing in a quick G

It's a bugle call, and basically IS a chord.

In C, "God is nigh" falls on G-G-C. A 4 chord, G, (GBD) doesn't work. In the key of C, it's C all the way through.

I find it very hard to imagine why anybody would WANT to put chords to it.

Sure you don't want an arrangement for ukulele and bones as well?

I'm about to make an orchestral arrangement of this for a concert next year. Hopefully the arrangement will add something to the piece.

key of C
The major7 equals changing the bass C down one fret(3ird to 2nd) en route to the A minor. If it can't be done fluently better to leave it out and just use the C major to A minor. The organ would make these chords via bass changes, C note to B note to A note. It IS essentially one chord except the resolution last line via the dominant G through G7 to the Tonic C.
(C)Day is (Am)done
(C)Gone the (Am)sun
(C)From (Cmaj7)the (Am)lake
(C)From (Cmaj7)the (Am)hill
(C)From (Cmaj7)the (Am)sky
(Am)All is (C)well
(C)Safely (C)rest
(G)God (G7)is (C)nigh.
