[1995:] Sudako Suzaki was just a baby when the bomb was dropped on Hiroshima. She survived but later developed leukemia as a result of the radiation. There's an old belief in Japan that if you make a thousand paper cranes (the crane being the symbol of health and long life), you can have any wish that you want. This is the true story of what happened. Today there is a statue of Sudako in the Peace Park of Hiroshima and children still go there with paper cranes. I prefer the song 'Hiroshima Child' by Nazim Hikmet, translated into English by Jeanette Turner, made famous by Pete Seeger with the "Great Selkie" tune written by James Waters. Moves me to tears every time I listen.

The Sadako books are both by Eleanor Coerr. There's also a video (news to me--must see if I can borrow it from a library).

I'm not sure which song about Sadako and the Thousand Cranes Tommy Sands sings, but I know of two songs about her. I think one is by Pete Seeger, or maybe he just recorded it. The other is by Fred Small. If the one Sands recorded ends with "This is our cry. This is our prayer. Peace in the world," it's Fred Small's. I don't know the Seeger song well enough to give you a line from it, and there may be others I've never heard. There are also two children's books about Sadako by the same author. One is a chapter book for young independent readers. The other is a picture book for even younger children. Both books are probably available in the children's section of most well-stocked libraries.

Having listened to Tommy Sands cds lately, he does a song called, Sudako or Sadako and the 1000 cranes. Any idea who wrote it and where I might find the chords or know what key it is in? Thanks.
