Hiroshima is our shame. It seems to absolve the Japanese from shame- about the War, about whaling, about exploitative attitudes.

405 cranes would be right for Sudoku.

The song was written by Tomy Sands himself.
I tabbed this song some time ago and you need the chords D G ans A.

This song contains 1000 cranes but no mention of Sudako so it may not be the one that OP was looking for. Small Potatoes - 1000 Candles, 1000 Cranes

SUDAKO AND THE PAPER CRANES
(Tommy Sands)

Sudako, let me make a paper crane for you
Sudako, let me help to make your dreams come true

Sudako was a baby when the cruel bombs were burning
And the homes of Hiroshima turned to hell
But somehow she kept living and she seemed to laugh and play
Just like any little girl of ten
But lately, she's complaining of dizzy spells and headaches
And she's praying for an end to all these pains
And she hears the old folks whisper
Your wishes will be granted if you make a thousand paper cranes

She doesn't wish for chocolate cakes or dolls with coloured dresses
As lovingly she folds each paper crane
The only prayer she whispers, May this sickness go away
And poison bombs don't ever come again
Her hands are growing slower but her hopeful heart is racing
She has made six hundred cranes and forty-four
But the headaches keep returning, her fingers they are burning
She whispers, I just can't make any more

The children leave the classroom, they are crowding round her bedside
They are making paper cranes with loving speed
Soon there'll be a thousand and your wishes will come true
Sudako, are you smiling in your sleep
The pains of life are leaving and the only dream she's dreaming
Is a dream that bombs will never fall again
And that's the dream they carry as they gather at her graveside
And gently place a thousand paper cranes

No chords, I'm afraid, but a little more info:

[1995:] Sudako Suzaki was just a baby when the bomb was dropped on Hiroshima. She survived but later developed leukemia as a result of the radiation. There's an old belief in Japan that if you make a thousand paper cranes (the crane being the symbol of health and long life), you can have any wish that you want. This is the true story of what happened. Today there is a statue of Sudako in the Peace Park of Hiroshima and children still go there with paper cranes. (I thank Patti Mohr from Bethlehem, Pennsylvania for bringing this story to my attention, and Fred Small for a beautiful song on the same subject.) (Notes Tommy Sands, 'The Heart's A Wonder')

[2005:] In the post-war years it was hard to find a Japanese child who did not know the story of Sadako, a young victim of the bombing who folded 1,000 paper cranes - a symbol of peace - as she lay dying from leukaemia. Today's 12-year-olds are barely aware of the importance of 6 August, says Ken Kobayakawa of the Hiroshima Institute of Peace Education. 'The farther you get away from Hiroshima the less children know what happened there.' (Justin McCurry, Observer 20 Feb)

I prefer the song 'Hiroshima Child' by Nazim Hikmet, translated into English by Jeanette Turner, made famous by Pete Seeger with the "Great Selkie" tune written by James Waters. Moves me to tears every time I listen.

Subject: Lyr Add: CRANES OVER HIROSHIMA (Fred Small)

I hope the thread title can be changed to Sadako and the Thousand Cranes so people know that this thread is about more than a math puzzle game. (soduku, sudoku, saduko, soduko, sudoko)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sadako_Sasaki

from the Wikipedia site: "Another song inspired by Sadako's story is Fred Small's "Cranes Over Hiroshima".

This is a beautiful story, and there are instructions on how to fold the origami paper cranes. here:
http://phillesh.net/philzonepages/friends_stuff/nye-cranes.html

there are many (perhaps 1000) of these origami cranes hanging at the
cancer center here...they are a colorful and hopeful sign for healing.

here are the lyrics and chords..

ARTIST: Fred Small
TITLE: Cranes Over Hiroshima
Lyrics and Chords

The baby blinks her eyes as the sun falls from the sky.
She feels the stings of a thousand fires as the city around her dies.
Some sleep beneath the rubble; some wake to a different world.
From the crying babe will grow a laughing girl.

/ E - F#m - / G#m - A B / E - AE F#m / B - E - /

Ten summers fade to autumn; ten winters' snows have passed.
She's a child of dreams and dances; she's a racer strong and fast;
But the headaches come ever more often, and the dizziness always returns,
And the word that she hears is leukemia, and it burns.

{Refrain}
Cranes over Hiroshima, white and red and gold,
Flicker in the sunlight like a million vanished souls.
I will fold these cranes of paper to a thousand one by one,
And I'll fly away when I am done.

/ E - C#m F#m / B - A E / - - AE F#m / C#m B E - /

Her ancestors knew the legend: if you make a thousand cranes
From squares of colored paper, it will take the pain away.
With loving hands, she folds them, six hundred forty-four,
Till the morning her stumbling fingers can't fold anymore.

{Refrain}

Her friends did not forget her; crane after crane they made
Until they reached a thousand and laid them upon her grave.
People from everywhere gathered; together, a prayer they said,
And they wrote the words in granite, so none can forget:

This is our cry; this is our prayer: peace in the world (3x)
This is our cry; this is our prayer: peace in the world
No more Hiroshima, no more Nagasaki.
This is our cry; this is our prayer: peace in the world
This is our cry; this is our prayer: peace in the world
Sing a song of peace, dream a dream of peace in the world
This is our cry; this is our prayer: peace in the world
This is our cry

The Sadako books are both by Eleanor Coerr. There's also a video (news to me--must see if I can borrow it from a library).

I'm not sure which song about Sadako and the Thousand Cranes Tommy Sands sings, but I know of two songs about her. I think one is by Pete Seeger, or maybe he just recorded it. The other is by Fred Small. If the one Sands recorded ends with "This is our cry. This is our prayer. Peace in the world," it's Fred Small's. I don't know the Seeger song well enough to give you a line from it, and there may be others I've never heard. There are also two children's books about Sadako by the same author. One is a chapter book for young independent readers. The other is a picture book for even younger children. Both books are probably available in the children's section of most well-stocked libraries.

Having listened to Tommy Sands cds lately, he does a song called, Sudako or Sadako and the 1000 cranes. Any idea who wrote it and where I might find the chords or know what key it is in? Thanks.
