Subject: Review: Danny Kalb new Cd From: GUEST,Bluesman James Date: 11 Apr 10 - 01:00 PM Just want to let everyone that Danny Kalb - former Blues Project Acoustic Guitarist has a new Cd "I am Gonna Live the Life I sing About" Its on the Sojourn Label.http://www.sojournrecords.com/prod/artist/danny_kalb People associate Danny with the Electric Folk-Rock band "The Blues Project" but that is only a small part of Danny's musical journey. He was, before the Blues Project, an Acoustic player with an excellent technique. He recorded on Prestige and Folkways. He was a member of Dave Van Ronk's Jug Stoppers and he played the background acoustic guitar on Phil Och's "All the news thats fit to Sing" The song "Power and Glory"- that incredible introduction - Thats Danny. I had the pleasure of studying with Danny in the late 70's and I was amazed of his knowledge of Merle Travis. He taught me "Nine Pound Hammer" and "Green Rocky Road" - the latter associated with Van Ronk. Danny does a great job with Billy Boy Arnold's "I wish you would" He reinterprets "Slippin 'N'a Sliddin" to an almost medication. He reintroduces us to "Danville Dane" a tune associated with the late Tim Hardin Pulls out a tune he wrote with the Blues Project "Crazy Girl. Every song is stamped Danny Kalb, either his finger picking or ligh'tn fast lead work on electric. (Danny has a Gibson J200 to die for) He does a beautiful rendition of Gary Davis "Samson and Delilah" where takes the Rev Davis technique but makes it Danny Kalb. He performs with a trio consisting of himself on guitars (acoustic and electric) Bob Jones (guitar repair man) on string bass and Mark Anastasio on drums/percussion. On two tracks he is joined by his brother Johnathan Kalb on harmonica. I cannot recommend this recording enough. Danny is touring and you can go to his website http://www.dannykalb.net/ for updates and touring information. |

Subject: RE: Review: Danny Kalb new Cd From: RWilhelm Date: 11 Apr 10 - 02:39 PM He was my favorite blues guitarist in the 60s when I was just learning. So much more soul than his rock contemporaries. I can't wait to hear what he is doing now. |
