Subject: Folklore: New NC free folk fest, Laurinburg 4/24 From: lisa null Date: 13 Apr 10 - 02:36 PM My son John Null, an alumnus of St. Andrews Presbyterian College in Laurinburg, NC, has launched a new folk festival there in conjunction with their Alumni Weekend. It will feature Debby McClatchy, who is flying in from California for this, and Big Medicine-- wonderful old time string band from Raleigh with Joe Newberry, Bobb Head, Kenny Jackson, and LaNelle Davis. Of course I will be taking part too-- my son says I am the honored guest--hmmm, I must be getting to be one of those old timers they haul out on stage to talk about the old days. No way, not me! But I will sing my heart out. The festival will open with members of the Laurinburg Scottish Pipe Band. I am very excited that John is carrying this interest in trad music to the next generation. He is starting small: 1:00-4:00 in the afternoon, outside on the Patio of the Belk Center on campus. You can find it by following the signs. The local motels are full because of the weekend, but Laurinburg is near a lot of other wonderful places in the NC Sandhills. Subject: RE: Folklore: New NC free folk fest, Laurinburg 4/ From: Janie Date: 24 Apr 10 - 11:33 PM Wonderful performances by Lisa, Carly, Debbie McClatchy and Big Medicine! Intimate setting, lots of singing along and a small but wonderfully appreciative audience. I'll have snatches of song running through my head from this one for weeks! Lisa, I've always loved your singing at the Getaway, but to watch you perform a full set, and really get to see how you engage the audience was an absolute delight. I had never seen Debbie McClatchy, and mostly know of her work through post to Mudcat. I expected to enjoy her set, and was not disappointed. Wonderfully energetic. (And I luvs the banjo!) Joe Newbury and Big Medicine are always a treat. One song they did I have never heard, and now I can't get it out of my head. "Sit Down. I Can't Sit Down. I Just Got to Heaven and I want to (Have to?) Walk Around." |
