I've created a new line of wood guitar stands that are designed as furniture for the home. If people are interested, I would develop a stand for violins/violas. Since these are a custom hardwood stands, they are a bit more expensive than your typical metal stand. If anyone is interested, please contact me or visit the website at www.takeastandinc.com. Thanks.

Here ya go, Jane!

This is what I have and it's great! Five minute installation and the fiddle's there and ready whenever you are. The nice thing about leaving it on the wall is that when you have only five minutes, like when you're waiting for your ride to show up or the noodles to boil, you can get a tune or two in while you wait.

Amazon has several right now for under $10.00.

Well, for gigs anyway, for practices and storage we use our cases.

In our band we have just used a wire coat hanger, bent the hanger into shape hooked it on to the microphone stand, and taped foam on to it to cushion the violin from the metal. Cheap as chips.

the Hercules is excellent - we use one on our gigs and also a Hercules triple guitar stand for 2 guitars and a bouzouki. very robust and stable.

I wouldn't recommend a violin stand, don't they like to sit down?

I read in a book from the 18somethings, Victorian anyway, that the best way to to keep your violin is to;
"leave it in an open case covered with a silk handkerchief on top of the piano".
I was wondering if you don't have a piano would an 'I Pod' do just as well.

My dad was a welder and one-man band. He welded an ingenious stand which held his mando, fiddle, and banjo. It was not lightweight, but he could still carry it in to gigs on his own until he quit going to them at about 85-86 years old. It had a middle vertical bar round which there were three hanging pegs/brackets for each instrument. While he was playing one, he could round robin that stand, getting ready to hang up the one instrument he was playing and pick up the next.

We never, ever left our fiddles out, but I do remember his guitar and banjo being case-less, always. Out here, I'd be too concerned about one drying out and cracking were it kept out. Good luck, regardless!

Jane, is it really such an onerous task to take a fiddle out of a case? For the protection against accidental damage I think it's time well spent.

Dust - if you leave it out, you need to dust it... :-)

Here's a hanger for a mic or music stand - I take this to a gig and attach it to the mic stand, and I also attach it to my heavy-duty Manhasset stand in my music room. And also a wall hanger.

Katriona Gilmore had a nice one, with bow store, when she played in Kent last week. Looked something like this, but a bit more robust:

Oh yes - slacked off bow hangs from the same hook by the hair - done it for years with no problems.

I've put a couple of cup hooks in the wall and a small loop of cord round the scroll to hang them up.
Easy

Hercules makes a nice floor stand (that we use for mandolins), they also make hangers. The good thing about them is that they have two little fingers that enclose the neck, making it more secure. Don't know if they're available in the U.K.

Why not get a Pub Prop and attach it to a shelf or a block of wood screwed to the wall? The Pub Prop will come in handy anyway.

I'd be interested to know how other fiddlers store their fiddle. I need either a stand for mine or something to hang it on the wall. I don't have much space in my flat but I want to keep my instruments out rather than have to get them out of their case every time I want to practise. If anyone can advise me on this I'd appreciate it.
