Bill Adair presents his amazing song cycle with narrative commemerating the 50th anniversary (in 2009) of the Auchengeich Colliery disaster. He has a cracking band helping him out with this: John Bushby (smallpipes of many sorts, bouzouki, mandolin, whistles, vocals) Caroline Bushby (Celtic Harp, vocals) & Wendy Arrowsmith (guitar, accordion, whistles, percussion, vocals). Bill is a superb singer and guitar player.

Helping out as M.C. and doing a 40 minute set will be the superlative Stan Graham. Stan has recently toured Australia with Vin Garbutt ..... and sold out of CDs along the way! Expect thought provoking songs from this gentleman of the folk world.

I'll be adding another act to this stellar line-up as well!

No bar tonight so bring your own favourite tipple.

The show will also be presented at The Cutty Wren Folk Club in Skelton-In-Cleveland on Thursday 21 st October.

Check out Banjostead on YouTube. Good ol' Joe Stead stealthily (and some times not so!) makes the rounds and gets some good stuff! He's got an awesome and powerful voice and a passion for the singing his own good self!

If you categorise a clip as private, the people you permit to view the clip must have a You Tube login id, though that is not really a major problem, and you can only permit a maximum of 25 people to view the video.

Even with small numbers I find unlisted to be more useful unless you have good reason to restrict access to the clip as with unlisted anyone you give the url to can pass it on.

I have done several where I have categorised them as "unlisted": this mean that only the person uploading them, and anyone he/she sends the link to, can view them: this works best if you have a large group of people to send a video to.
If you have only one person to send it to, then you can list it as private: if that person then decides they are happy for public viewing you can go back in and edit the category.
However the default setting is "public", so you need to check that this s what you want before releasing it to the world in entirety.

That seems sensible and fair :)

   Someone who just wanted to video a session for their own use, so that they could sit down later and learn the tunes at their own pace, would probably be happy with a few mistakes in the recording which the subjects wouldn't want broadcast to the world :D

I wouldn't like to argue with you AC as I am not entirely sure what exactly the copyright situation is on such videos. Certainly I am the copyright owner of the video itself as I made the video and it is my original work. It may not be of great artistic merit, but it is still my original work. I expect that the performers who I have video'd will have some rights but I imagine they would have to go to court to prevent me uploading it if I was sufficiently determined, though I expect the court would take their side. So in that respect I would say discourteous. As to the material itself, I believe that the owners of You Tube (Google) have come to an arrangement with the PRS over that. Some input from Richard Bridge might be useful.

Whatever the legal situation, I do believe it is wrong to upload videos and put them on public display. I do think it would be OK to upload them and mark them as withheld so the subjects can have a look and decide whether they think they are OK to be made public.

Thanks for that Artful Codger :) I wasn't sure and while I've no objection to someone 'posting me on the web' if they've been polite and asked (and if my playing on the clip is up to scratch ), there have been some who seem hell bent on recording everyone's performance for uploading, especially at folk festival sessions, and get quite aggressive when asked not to. I know some shy musicians/singers (not all of them beginners either) who feel put off taking part when the 'paparazzi' youtubers are hovering   :(

I have a number of videos I have taken at the Black Bull Bender in N. Yorkshire which I have not posted because I believe it is discourteous to post them without asking the performers first and I have never got round to asking them.

P.S. Ann, I don't think there is any automatic requirement to get the subject's approval before putting things up on YouTube, although there might be scope for them to complain and have videos withdrawn if they don't approve. The quality is very variable and some videos, like some demos, may do more harm than good.

The fact that these videos exist and are now on u-toob are, just that, an actual fact. Several of mine are now up there.

That said, they are all not ones I ever would've chosen to make available for the world to watch. I was a kid singing and practicing in public over 40 years ago. Yes, it's fun to see 'em. But they never would've seen the light of day if they were competing with the much better records I made over the years.

Hootenanny: the "out of synch" thing is prob NOT the fault of the camera or the recordist. It's prob more to do with upload/download speeds. I'm having the same problem watching a BBC programme that I downloaded to `BBCIplayer, and I would bet that the out of synch is NOT in the original programme.

A good point actually. It is not a club venture but an Italian chap who has started coming to the club and in his enthusiasm started videoing. I mentioned the camera shake of his early efforts and he has started bringing a tripod - with much better results - see All Smiles Tonight in the opening posting of this thread.

I watched a couple of the Waterson songs from Lewes and came away feeling a little seasick Does no-one there own a tripod for the camera.
I also find it a little weird watching Norma sing the words before the sound arrives. Surely she wasn't miming badly. Is it not possible to make video recordings where the sound isn't out of synch?
