Thunderbird will import address books in .csv format. It's how I transferred my outlook contacts when I retired. It was also how I transferred them from the Windows to the Linux version of Thunderbird.

Also I've just checked to be sure.

If you used Outlook for more than email - for calendar for example, you would have to look at an another alternative than Thunderbird if you can't get Outlook sorted. Try Evolution. Originally developed for Linux (It was the default when I installed Linux) there is a Windows version. It claims similar functionality to Outlook and is open source (no license fees)

If you want to find product keys registered on your system easily and quickly, try downloadng 'Magical Jellybean Keyfinder'...

The Product ID found in 'Help/About' isn't the 'CD Key' required by the install process.

You quite probably can read the Product Key for Outlook by clicking Help|About Outlook in Outlook. It should give you the name of the person/business who is the registered owner, and the Product Key originally used to register the product.

If you put "Product Key" in the Windows Help (from the Start Button), or in the Office "master program" Word, you should find a description of any variations necessary for the version you have.

When (if) transferring to Outlook from other programs, it's been recommended that you save (export) a copy of the info you want to transfer as a .csv file (comma separated variables) from the other program. Outlook has always been able to import csv files, but may not make an accurate/complete transfer from some other programs that have their own "private" formats.

The method(s) needed to go from Outlook to another program may depend on the target program, but most other programs are reported as being able to transfer your addy book (contacts). For Contacts/Address Lists, with a little effort you can read the .csv files as "text" (by importing into Word or Excel, if you're clever) so saving before you dump the old program at least gives you a sort of backup if things go sour during the transfer.

Depends on the new email client, Mozilla Thunderbird imports all data from outlook. I am sure at least some of the other e-mail software will as well.

If I change to the upgrade or change my email client, would I lose my inbox, address book, directories?

The key on my PC case is for XP - not for Office.

Take a look at your computer (CPU) case. If you bought it with the operating system installed, then you should find the hologram sticker (about the size of a regular Bandaid) somewhere on the side of the computer. The key is the series of numbers (it'll look something like 12345-23456-34567-23456-12345-23456 and there will probably be both numbers and letters). Otherwise, you can call an 800 number that may be popping up with the message, and they can issue you a new key. Explain what is happening.

Meanwhile, you could simply get a better resident email program. I prefer Thunderbird, put out by Mozilla, the same folks who do Firefox. It's free and it's easy to use.

over the last week or so my PC keeps trying to update from Outlook 2002 to a more up to date version - then it asks for the registration key which I can't find so it won't install.

The only way I can get to my email and extensive contact list is to constantly restore the 31 March system backup?

How can I get my PC/Microsoft to leave my outlook alone. I'm perfectly happy with the version I have.
