Shepley Spring Festival, near Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, is coming up just around the corner, a weekend later than usual from 21st-23rd May. (So it might be a bit warmer this year!)

The festival has a full weekend of events celebrating the best of traditional music, song and dance, including concerts, ceilidhs, morris dancing, music and song sessions, and music and dance workshops.

Artists include:
Seth Lakeman, 3 Daft Monkeys, Jackie Oates, Mawkin:Causley, Tim O'Brien & Kris Drever, Skerryvore, Saltfishforty, Jim Moray, Bedlam, Shepley Singers

There is also a special event on the Sunday called 'To Slay a Bullock' which is a collaboration between Grenoside Sword Dancers and The Newcastle Kingsmen (current champions of DERT!) to celebrate the 100th year anniversary of Cecil Sharp's "Sword Dances of Northern England - Part1." The day will include a rare performance, several dance workshops and an illustrated talk.

And you can even hire a Yurt for the weekend!

Hi all,
There is still hostel accommodation available at the lovely Cliffe House if you think it might be a bit nippy for camping!

Cliffe House Conference Centre is in Shepley village and is the venue for all the music and singing workshops.

It's only a couple of minutes walk from the main festival site and offers dormitory style bed and breakfast accommodation in 2, 4 or 6 bedded rooms.

The new price is £20 B&B per night for old and new bookers. Now available Sunday night too.

Sounds good to me, but I'll be in mi VW!

The weather forecast is looking good for the rest of the country but everyone knows Sheply has it's own weather. On top of that mountain (we have nothing like it in the Fens so it must be a mountain) the wind always blows. We will still be packing double pyjamas to wear under our normal clothes for the evening concerts coz we don't want to miss any part of the event. We hitch up Bella (our caravan) tomorrow morning should be there by mid day to do some stuff and check the water table. It will be great to see old friends again.

And it will probably be warmer in Shepley than a certain event in January that I could name,but won't!!!!!!!

23 degrees forecast!! (during the day......the night will be rather different I'm sure!).

Just cleaning out Trundle (the vw) and loading him up with plenty of duvets in between choir stuff and schools showcase and various other chaotic things!!

Re too loud
Anything that includes drum with mics probable Seth Lakeman and whoever was on the dance area when Joe broughton was playing in the Hub on Sunday afternoon.As to whether it was to loud is of course to each person tastes but at 100 yds. in the caravan it felt very uncomfortable.

The most perfect weekend!! Loved it from start to finish!

I was next to the speakers most of the weekend.. no probs with it being too loud for me!

Beer Tent was loud Friday.. with The Young'Uns prompting a very fab sing song! Amazing atmosphere!!

See you all next year! Good job done Shepley! :-)

Is it just as we get older that we feel pain in the chest cavity from bass frequencies. I do remember at Fylde not many years ago when Little Jonny England started half the audience walked out after the first tune
not because of quality but quantity.And every one was an older person someone back me up on this one.

I was sat at the front at most of the concerts and the sound was indeed very good no problems. It`s the choice of acts who seem to want a more
pop/rock rather than acoustic made louder sound. After all I hope it was a Folk Festival rather than a more Glastonbury type festival.Sorry about complaining but I did have a great time honest.

No complaints were made to me.. and I was with the Main Stage the whole time.. and I had Ear Plugs available to anybody who became uncomfortable with the noise.. non were requested..

If you think Seth was loud (and it is not the first time this has been mentioned about Seth at a festival) then you might take it up with his management. Nowadays many artists travel with their own sound crew, monitor engineers and the festival will have little influence about the level.

But the festival was a great experience, and I think both the organisers and artists deserve a huge round of applause. Having seen the worst that the weather can throw at Shepley we have now seen the best.

The Young 'Uns were great and I was very impressed (second time) by Moore Moss Rutter. A measure of their talent is that there were a number of their peers in the audience.

"Guest" says that festivals have little influence over sound levels.
I know of one festival that states that they would prefer artists to use their own equipment and professional sound engineers. But they add that if bands wish to use their own engineers "the quality and volumes at soundchecks and performances will be monitored by the festival's PA manager who will have ultimate control over such matters." This is because of the agreement with the local authority. It's a green field festival, using marquees.
So it is possible for festivals to influence sound levels.
You just have to make sure that you tell artists in advance and that your own equipment and PA people are as professional as possible.

I was at Shepley, stayed for a few songs from Seth, didn't think it excessively loud. I left for other reasons. I did notice that Seth's own PA person seemed to do a longish line check before he went on, presumably after a soundcheck before the concert started. seemed excessive. I didn't stay for 3 Daft Monkeys on Sunday, but suspect they might have been louder...

Incidentally, there seems to be an increase in people posting as "Guest" - I thought this wasn't allowed under the Mudcat rules.

Indeed and I apologise for remaining anonymous, I am having difficulties with cookies at the moment.

I can only call it as I see it. I didn't see and hear Seth - just saying that you need to complain to the correct person. I have never come across a PA manager at a folk festival. I have known of sound limiters on the perimeter at a pop festival.

Who has a PA manager. (Wychwood has sound limiters installed). Saw Three Daft Monkeys and Skerryvore. Both were loud IMHO but I am old.

Loud from the beer tent? Yes!!!

Could not understand a word Seth Lakeman sang, we left after 3 songs. The quality of his sound was better half way across the camp site. Skerryvore were loud but excellent. We tend not to do concerts now because of the poor quality and loudness. Moore, Moss and Rutter are a trio to watch out for. The weather was brilliant as was Slay the Bullock. All in all a great event well done Shepley, we will be back, if we are allowed.

Did any of you see Tim O'Brien and Kris Drever there? We already had tickets to see them at Bury Met on the Saturday so couldn't stretch to going to Shepley too. They were absolutely wonderful at Bury. Lovely harmonies, great playing, top notch stuff!

Hi all, I didn't manage to catch many other acts cos I was busy running around performing myself, but I did manage to catch a bit of Seth. The marquee was rammed so I only popped in at the back, then the beer tent called me.....but yes, I could hear it from there pretty well!

I was sad I missed The Young 'Uns, but heard brilliant reports about them.

I did hear Moore, Moss and Rutter though. WOWZERS!! I need to get practising, they were brilliant.

White Rose were on top form and the other dance teams were all of a very high standard.....and nice to be able to watch the dance showcase on the outside arena in the glorious sunshine rather than the usual steamy dance tent!

I think I'm still catching up on sleep....might not fully recover for another week or so!
