It looks like we have Monday nite August 16 (after Auchtermuchty) in Glasgow with a music night and a place to stay and probably Tuesday in Ayrshire near Glasgow. People have suggested some musical possibilities in Scotland and Yorkshire from then until Whitby - we have not made definite plans as yet.

We need a place to stay near Manchester for our last night, August 28. Can anyone help us there? We can do a motel or B&B, but getting to know 'catters is more fun.

Sarah - we will look for you at Whitby. We saw you there two years ago.

I am glad to see that Max's trip is getting sorted out. We will see him at Whitby and share a cottage for several days.

We still have room to visit with a few mudcatters is southern Scotland and northern England Aug 17-18 or thereabouts. It is much more fun to get to know people rather than to stay in B&Bs. See our schedule three posts up. We can also use a place to stay in Manchester our last night.

Decisions, decisions.

Whether to follow the plan above, being in the UK from Aug 20 to Sept 7, going to the Wail after Whitby, visiting southern 'catters between Whitby and the Wail and flying out of Heathrow.

Or to come earlier, Aug 13, and leave right after Whitby, going to Auchtermuchty, flying in to Glasgow and out from Manchester, visiting any northern 'catters who want to see us between Auchtermuchty and Whitby.

So who wants to see us where and when?

Has anyone been to the Auchtermuchty Festival the weekend before Whitby? Can anyone put us up or loan us camping gear if we go there?

If we go to Auchtermuchty the week before Whitby, we would not go to the Wail, but would fly home shortly after Whitby.

That leaves lots of visiting time Aug 28 to Sept 3
   Dick is talking about heading north to Scotland first and then we head south toward Wareham, perhaps heading out to Cornwall, if there is time. So who would like to see us? It is unclear whether/when Max will be traveling with us.

2000 was our first trip over to Whitby. Bill Sables insisted we come. We love it. All trad festivals are really hard to find in the US.

If we stay for the Wareham Wail, we would be moving south after Whitby and probably into Cornwall, where we have never been. Can any 'catters put us up on the way? Or near the Wail?

Susan - Whitby is where I was introduced to the Digital Tradition - when you and Dick turned up at Graham Moore's workshop in 2000; to Mudcat in 2001 (when Tyke took me to the Ducks' Mudcat BBQ)and to Joe Offer, when he came to the Whitby Mudgather. So I hope to see Max in Whitby this year too, even if he can't get to the Wail!

There is a great session at the Tap & Spile York, Friday nights, worth a trip (can be a bit bruising!), and I can thoroughly recommend the wednesday night at Flaxton.

Friday Robin Hoods Bay folk club at the Dolphin (5miles south of Whitby)

All of these I would call traditional certainly the majority of what is sung is trad.
But there will always be something else thrown in. There will be if I'm there

If I had to order them
You have to go to the Bay on Fri thats a tourist thing and its a nice club
Its got a big hill to get up and down on foot but if you can do it then it is worth the effort
Google Robin Hoods Bay folk club

The Rugby club on Sun
They have by far the most accomplished group of performers
Google Guisborough Folk club

After that
Mickelby at the White Hart is a small club but friendly enough
Even Tootler and I go there
Definitly Trad The web site is a bit out of date

There's Saltburn Folk Festival on the 13th, 14th & 15th of August, Just a week before Whitby, smaller but very friendly.

Friday nights there's Bay Folk Club at Robin Hood's Bay about 5 miles from Whitby.

A bit further afield but an excellent night is the Wellington (The Welly) at Wolviston on Thursday nights. About 40 miles from Whitby. Run by Ken Wilson of the Co. Durham Wilsons. Plenty of trad stuff there.

Fantum - That's an amazing amount of music. We don't get that concentration of music events anywhere outside of a large city in the US. Are these all fairly trad? At the moment I am collecting info to design the trip.

You'd always be welcome in Farlington on a Wednesday night where we meet each week and get together and sing and play. It's not all traditional but you'd hopefully enjoy it. Once described by an Irish friend "like singing in a friend's front room in Ireland". We're about 50 miles south of Whitby about 10 miles north of York.

There's a link here with some info on what we are about though the music is a year or two old it's still representative.

Dick and I are planning to go to Whitby Folk Week again this summer, as we do roughly every two years. We love that festival. We have arranged a cottage, but have not yet decided exactly when to fly in and out to leave room to visit mudcat friends old and new. Would anyone like us to visit them before or after Whitby? Are there any other trad folk events right before or after?
