Does anybody have the full lyrics to the song London NW2 (or Leaving London NW2). I believe that it starts something like this:

I worked upon the highways for 5 long years or more,
And I've driven a 10 ton cat' 'till my hands were blistered sore,

I can't remember any more of it and I can't find the lyrics anywhere.

Written by Mick Flynn, and recorded on "'Til the Wildbirds', an album by The Tinkers, who were at that time (1970 or thereabouts) Mick Flynn, Gerry Fox and Joanna Wheatley - so you might track it down from that reference. Fontana was the label, I believe. Bargain bins/ebay?

Thanks for the info. Definitely the right reference. I found several copies of the vinyl available, but since I no longer have the wherewithal to play vinyl that's no much help.

I distinctly remember the TInkers playing at a cafe in Queensway - LOndon, back in around 1968. A great cafe with a steel band called Les Flambeau playing in the basement. Joanna Wheatley singing folk songs- mainly as a solo artist on the ground floor cafe and a restaurant on the upper level. I do not remember the particular song London NW2 but I do remember that she was very good.

Is Joanna still around ? Maybe still performing ? It would be nice to say hello after so many years.

Can,t help with the lyrics but Mick shared a flat with my brother-in-law, Neil Bridgford, in Heath Street, Hampstead, NW3 in the mid-60s just about the time that the tinkers recorded Carrickfergus and he was best man at my brother-in-law's wedding. I seem to remember that Maureen Kennedy-Martin was then the female vocalist. Neil has been dead these ten years but I think that my sister-in-law is still in touch with Cora, Mick's sister who might know something about Mick's songs.

The Tinkers were one of the four English (or English based) groups who were chosen to take part in the 1966 Kilkenny Beer Festival's folk group contest. In those days they were Mick Flynn, Gerry Fox and Maureen Kennedy Martin.

The other three groups were the Teesside Fettlers, the Kerry Singers from Coventry and the Biddles from Poole.

Iffy, my son sent me your enquiry as to the words of London NW2 which we recorded on Til The Wild Birds. If you still haven't got them I can take them down from the LP. I'm still playing and singing but purely for fun and on a non-professional basis.

Well, my cousin and I may have missed out on experiencing my aunt's singing and playing back in those days (so, sorry can't help with lyrics) but she stills wows us - we're proud of her!

Hi Joanna, yes, I found out on Mudcat that Gerry had died - sad news. I'm still playing, but I prefer sessions in the kitchen or going down to the oldtime American session (to play with Tom Paley and others) these days, although I still play as a resident (along with Gail Williams) for Sheila Miller's club, Cellar Upstairs.

I remember us appearing live on Kenyan TV back in '71 - beamed out into the bush.

Here's a glass raised to fond memories and absent friends. Hugs all round!

Jim

I used to go to the Oval Folk Club in Hendon when The Tinkers were resident there. Used to enjoy their music very much, guess this about 1970 time. Still have 2 of their LP's. Once met Joanna in Oxford street when she was on her way to an interview. Grat memories of that time including people like Derek Brimstone & Tom Paley

I used to work the bar at the Three Horseshoes in Hampstead where the Tinkers (Gerry Fox, Mick Flynn and Maureen Kennedy-Martin) ran their folk club in the mid-60's. A few years ago when in a pub in Amsterdam I spotted a photo of Mick and the barman told me that Mick was playing the following night. Unfortunately I was leaving that afternoon and was unable to meet up. I should add that running the folk club bar was a labour of love, a party every Friday night.

Hi Joanna!   It's been a while since you, Marian Shutler (nee McKenzie)& I were residents at the Holy Ground; Marian & I were talking about you last night and she was concerned that she hadn't heard from you for several years.   I said that I'd try to track you down.   The Yetties have retired and Marian sees a bit more of Pete now, but she would really like to hear from you.   All the best.

Hi Mick and Joanna.

Good to read your notes and that you're still around and playing. Like Jim Y I heard the news about Gerry here. I remember Gerry yourself and Maureen dropping in regularly to CSH when I worked there for Tony Wales in 69/70. At that time Joanna was mostly a solo performer, I'd see here mainly at the Enterprise and CSH. I remember J joining the Tinkers which seemed a surprise at the time bit IIRC worked well.

Good luck to both.

Subject: Lyr/Chords Add: LONDON NORTH WEST TWO / LONDON NW2
From: GUEST,Mick Flynn

From mick flynn , ill try to get a recording of the music if i can its been recorded by Mushroom records

LONDON NORTH WEST TWO

D                                     G          D            A7                               D
I've worked upon the motor ways for five long years or more
D             G             D                                                    A7
Driven a ten ton cat till my hands were blistered sore
D                               G   D                                        G
I rise up in the morning where no mountain dew
D                G                              D                A7                                 D
I curse my luck on board a truck leaving London North West two
Chorus
D                G          D                  G       D                   G                         Em       A7
For we're emigrants paying double rents from Hammersmith down to Kew
G                  DD                   G               D                G                        A7
In Camden town for the rough lie down and Cicklewood I'll bid you adieu

I've worked upon the highways the great hydro dams so tall
Lived the life of Riley when wages were not short or small
A long distance traveler sees a lot before his time is trough
As long as he stays healthy leaving London North West Two
Chorus
A health to the gallant Irish men who left the native shore
If they've shoveled gravel or grit may they shovel it no more?
Raise a glass to him the darky Finn who waved well by at Crew
Though heaven bent some time he spent in London North West Two
Chorus
Now that road is finished we're living on the dole
I rise up each morning I hear the big wheels roll
The man who drives that ten ton truck will never think of you
When times are bad pack the bag leave London North West Two

Hi Mick, great to pick up your thread on Mudcat. Watched you on Youtube didn't half bring back memories. To think that it all started with someone wanting the words to London NW2, must make you feel proud. Best wishes for 2012 may it bring you good health, good friendships and much happy singing. Love Joanna.

Hi Mick, glad to hear you're still making music. I expect you heard that Gerry Fox died about five years ago. I'm still in touch with his wife and family. Noel Murphy is living in Cornwall, but he's retired due to heart problems. I've been back in Dublin since 1974. All the best, Eddie McGinley

Mick - if you are still around, good on yer. After 17 years in L.A I'm enjoying the tranquillity of the Isle of Wight. If I had kept that great flat in Belsize Park, I'd be a millionaire. Keep on strummin'.
