Subject: Lyr Req: London NW2 From: GUEST,Iffy Date: 20 Apr 10 - 03:59 PM Does anybody have the full lyrics to the song London NW2 (or Leaving London NW2). I believe that it starts something like this: I worked upon the highways for 5 long years or more, And I've driven a 10 ton cat' 'till my hands were blistered sore, I can't remember any more of it and I can't find the lyrics anywhere. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: London NW2 From: GUEST,guest -jim younger Date: 20 Apr 10 - 04:15 PM Written by Mick Flynn, and recorded on "'Til the Wildbirds', an album by The Tinkers, who were at that time (1970 or thereabouts) Mick Flynn, Gerry Fox and Joanna Wheatley - so you might track it down from that reference. Fontana was the label, I believe. Bargain bins/ebay? |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: London NW2 (Mick Flynn/The Tinkers) From: GUEST Date: 09 May 10 - 10:00 AM Thanks for the info. Definitely the right reference. I found several copies of the vinyl available, but since I no longer have the wherewithal to play vinyl that's no much help. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: London NW2 (Mick Flynn/The Tinkers) From: GUEST,Nik Cookson Date: 18 May 10 - 03:19 PM I distinctly remember the TInkers playing at a cafe in Queensway - LOndon, back in around 1968. A great cafe with a steel band called Les Flambeau playing in the basement. Joanna Wheatley singing folk songs- mainly as a solo artist on the ground floor cafe and a restaurant on the upper level. I do not remember the particular song London NW2 but I do remember that she was very good. Is Joanna still around ? Maybe still performing ? It would be nice to say hello after so many years. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: London NW2 (Mick Flynn/The Tinkers) From: GUEST,Martin Monahan Date: 06 Aug 10 - 06:40 AM Can,t help with the lyrics but Mick shared a flat with my brother-in-law, Neil Bridgford, in Heath Street, Hampstead, NW3 in the mid-60s just about the time that the tinkers recorded Carrickfergus and he was best man at my brother-in-law's wedding. I seem to remember that Maureen Kennedy-Martin was then the female vocalist. Neil has been dead these ten years but I think that my sister-in-law is still in touch with Cora, Mick's sister who might know something about Mick's songs. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: London NW2 (Mick Flynn/The Tinkers) From: Terry McDonald Date: 06 Aug 10 - 09:07 AM The Tinkers were one of the four English (or English based) groups who were chosen to take part in the 1966 Kilkenny Beer Festival's folk group contest. In those days they were Mick Flynn, Gerry Fox and Maureen Kennedy Martin. The other three groups were the Teesside Fettlers, the Kerry Singers from Coventry and the Biddles from Poole. |

If you still haven't got them I can take them down from the LP. I'm still playing and singing but purely for fun and on a non-professional basis. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: London NW2 (Mick Flynn/The Tinkers) From: GUEST,Charlotte Clark nee Wheatley Date: 06 Nov 10 - 06:26 PM Well, my cousin and I may have missed out on experiencing my aunt's singing and playing back in those days (so, sorry can't help with lyrics) but she stills wows us - we're proud of her! |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: London NW2 (Mick Flynn/The Tinkers) From: GUEST Date: 08 Nov 10 - 10:19 AM Hi Joanna, yes, I found out on Mudcat that Gerry had died - sad news. I'm still playing, but I prefer sessions in the kitchen or going down to the oldtime American session (to play with Tom Paley and others) these days, although I still play as a resident (along with Gail Williams) for Sheila Miller's club, Cellar Upstairs. I remember us appearing live on Kenyan TV back in '71 - beamed out into the bush. Here's a glass raised to fond memories and absent friends. Hugs all round! Jim |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: London NW2 (Mick Flynn/The Tinkers) From: GUEST,Alan Baker Date: 22 Nov 10 - 11:15 AM I used to go to the Oval Folk Club in Hendon when The Tinkers were resident there. Used to enjoy their music very much, guess this about 1970 time. Still have 2 of their LP's. Once met Joanna in Oxford street when she was on her way to an interview. Grat memories of that time including people like Derek Brimstone & Tom Paley |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: London NW2 (Mick Flynn/The Tinkers) From: GUEST,Roy Carcary Date: 12 Dec 10 - 04:02 PM I used to work the bar at the Three Horseshoes in Hampstead where the Tinkers (Gerry Fox, Mick Flynn and Maureen Kennedy-Martin) ran their folk club in the mid-60's. A few years ago when in a pub in Amsterdam I spotted a photo of Mick and the barman told me that Mick was playing the following night. Unfortunately I was leaving that afternoon and was unable to meet up. I should add that running the folk club bar was a labour of love, a party every Friday night. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: London NW2 (Mick Flynn/The Tinkers) From: GUEST,Paddy Harries Date: 03 Aug 11 - 12:06 PM Hi Joanna! It's been a while since you, Marian Shutler (nee McKenzie)& I were residents at the Holy Ground; Marian & I were talking about you last night and she was concerned that she hadn't heard from you for several years. I said that I'd try to track you down. The Yetties have retired and Marian sees a bit more of Pete now, but she would really like to hear from you. All the best. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: London NW2 (Mick Flynn/The Tinkers) From: Kevin Sheils Date: 10 Dec 11 - 07:03 AM Hi Mick and Joanna. Good to read your notes and that you're still around and playing. Like Jim Y I heard the news about Gerry here. I remember Gerry yourself and Maureen dropping in regularly to CSH when I worked there for Tony Wales in 69/70. At that time Joanna was mostly a solo performer, I'd see here mainly at the Enterprise and CSH. I remember J joining the Tinkers which seemed a surprise at the time bit IIRC worked well. Good luck to both. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: London NW2 (Mick Flynn/The Tinkers) From: GUEST,Tony Cawley Belmullet in Mayo Date: 30 Dec 19 - 04:48 PM I gave this song to Seamus Moore back in 1989.He recorded it was the title song for a tape he made at the time "London's NW2.The Photo for the tape cover was taken on the corner of Chichelle Rd and Cricklewood Broadway where the NW2 sign is on the railings.Another song of the Tinkers I have and would still give blast to after a few points would be,"Paddy on the Road.I had the Tinkers recording of that but the old rape recorder got damaged.Id love to get the words of Paddy on the Road as I've forgotten a few lines of the last verse.By the way Seamus now runs Monaghans Tavern beside Woodgreen Green Station. |
