Subject: What's a permathread

Sorry to hassle you all with this, but I haven't managed to find the answer in the FAQs.

I've seen the new FAF "permathread" - what is a permathread and how is it different from other threads?

Cheers,

Weasel

From the FAQ:
"PermaThreads™
(threads maintained by various Mudcatters for use as permanent references)"

You can look at the index of Permathreads to see what other ones exist.

Thanks,

I didn't find that reference (all I could find was a list of "permathreads") but how are they different from ordinary threads? (What does the "perma" bit mean?

Sorry, this isn't really important, I'd just rather know than not know.

Cheers

I think perma=permanent.

Permathreads can be edited by whichever member is tending them.

example:
If this was a permathread, edited by you, you could delete this post. It's a way to have more control over the content.

If you had a permathread, you would sort of be the Joe within the thread.

Generally what happens in a PermaThread, is that the "moderator" takes command of the first two or three messages in a thread, so the most pertinent information is at the top of the thread. Other people post information or comments, and the person in charge consolidates that information into the top messages and deletes the others.

The PermaThread Index lists them all. My favorite is the Basic Folk Library PermaThread. I also like the DTStudy threads which are edited studies of the songs in the Digital Tradition.

And some of them (if nobody has visited for a while) become "Permafrost Threads"
(Sorry, couldn't resist!)

Thanks - now I get it.

Mousethief - it's that very connection between perma and permanent that was puzzling me - I thought all the threads were permanent.

Like I said, not important, but I'm wiser now that I was yesterday! :-)

Cheers,

Weasel

Yup - all threads are permanent - but the Perma
Threads are supposed to serve as a permanent information resource.

Just so you don't mind enabling those opposed to operate perma threads as well. Being devil's advocate here....I actually support FAF. Just seems that a political perma thread calls for balance should someone step forward and wish to do one.....

Well, no, Conrad, we can't allow PermaThreads for political opinion - too easy to manipulate something like that. And we allow only known "regulars" of good reputation to moderate PermaThreads. If I get the impression that a person wants a PermaThread for manipulative purposes or to control what is being said by people, their request is denied, appealable to Max.
I realize there is some question about the Folk Against Fascism PermaThread, and I am watching that thread carefully. I'm hoping it will allow the conveyance of announcements in a non-controversial manner.

It's all to do with string theory. Permathread can never actually be destroyed, whereas theoretical string is largely an unreliable nuisance.

I've noticed that a few performer and folk club PermaThreads are way out of date. If you've asked for a PermaThread, you're supposed to be keeping it current. If you want a PermaThread to be suspended or closed, please let me know.

Thanks.

Well... a permatread is a tread dat is permanent. Becuase it is a tread dat is permanent it is a good tread and dat's why it is a permament tread.

Apologies to Jean Chretien and all my Acadian relatives who distrust Quebec politicians (except Trudeau).

We use a permathread for Gainsborough Folk Club and delete all posts escept the venue details every fortnight. Over the years this amounts to many thousands of posts (which would have no research value) reducing the load on the system. Just doing our bit to promote smooth running of the site!

I suppose the closest analogy is with the word "permafrost" - ice water below ground which has stayed under 0 deg C for more than two years.

We have a number of PermaThreads that have had no activity for months or even years. We really need somebody to maintain these threads and keep them up-to-date. If you'd like to volunteer, please contact me. The list of PermaThreads is here (click).

Somebody wrote and told me she was the moderator of a PermaThread ©, and wondered why she wasn't able to edit the thread. She hadn't contact me about it in the beginning, and just started the thread on her own.

If you'd like to start an edited PermaThread to advertise a performer or folk club or to launch a special project, please contact me first.

Thanks.
