Subject: RE: Sheffield Folk festival 2010 From: stallion Date: 14 Oct 10 - 04:18 AM Why not go down the York route, we started with a one day celebration of local performers and now it is two days, all free with no paid guests.True it is based on one pub with a Marquee in the car park, being free makes the B & B option more attractive although people i think come for one day or the other. Roland manages to get great line ups for the Marquee, our slot was sandwiched between Edwina Hayes and Blackbeards Teaparty. The weekend is has something going on in three of the four remaining rooms all weekend muso sessions, singaround. Ah well good luck with it |

Subject: RE: Sheffield Folk festival 2010 From: GUEST,Lowden J Date: 13 Oct 10 - 06:05 AM Is that true Dave? I've not been for a while but the last I heard was she had moved into a larger room there in order to accommodate rising numbers! Your point about support for other festivals is certainly true; Whitby is getting more and more like Sheffield Folk on tour. |
Subject: RE: Sheffield Folk festival 2010 From: GUEST,MC Fat (at work) Date: 13 Oct 10 - 06:04 AM I sort of agree with Dave iin one respect about another festival in the current climate. The Venue as Dave says is currently shut and is in Stocksbridge some way from the centre of Sheffield. One of the reasons Sheffield worked (to an extent) in it's first four years was the proximity of the then main venue (Kelham Island Museum) to the city centre and to some excellent city pubs. We even managed some camper van space and some indoor camping at the City Life Church all within walking distance. |
Subject: RE: Sheffield Folk festival 2010 From: Folkiedave Date: 13 Oct 10 - 05:58 AM Errr......the Venue has just shut down Folk nights with Charlie Barker! Though the Wortley Folk CLub has moved there and indeed hosts Kevin Dempsey and Peter Knight this weekend. Mark Davies runs a small traditional festival at Bradfield - I go to that every year. There is no doubt as M.C. Fat says - there are problems seeking a venue - and there is a distinct lack of camping places. However Sheffield people do support other festivals in large numbers (Shepley being a great example). I am not sure another festival is a good idea in the current climate anyway. |
Subject: RE: Sheffield Folk festival 2010 From: GUEST,Lowden J Date: 13 Oct 10 - 05:37 AM The Venue (Stocksbridge) hosts very successful folk nights with Charlie Barker. It would be an ideal venue, and with Charlie involved on the organisational front I'm sure it could be a great success. There are many folk and acoustic music evenings in the Sheffield area and should (in theory at least) be plenty of support for a festival. |
Subject: RE: Sheffield Folk festival 2010 From: GUEST,MC Fat (at work) Date: 13 Oct 10 - 04:31 AM I think Stallion there is general support for a Festival. The trouble is it ended up being a smaller and smaller group of active committee members that coupled with the lack of venues of a good size to put on concerts and ceilidhs. The sessions and there were many ran themselves and were of good quality. |
Subject: RE: Sheffield Folk festival 2010 From: stallion Date: 13 Oct 10 - 04:13 AM Seems a pity a place the size of sheffield can't support a festival of sorts, not that I get off the leash that often to attend such events! But one of our number works in Sheffield, one never knows! |
Subject: RE: Sheffield Folk festival 2010 From: GUEST,MC Fat (at work) Date: 12 Oct 10 - 07:03 AM I'm sorry to say that not much has been done. I've not heard if the Music for Malcolm event is going on this year. I have had premilnary discussions with some people and I am keen to resuurect certain aspects of the Festival as mention in this thread. I think there is scope to carry on with the excellent sessions that the Festival produced but Sheffield's perennial problems with regard to lack of decent size venues for concerts and ceilidhs come to the fore. I do not have the time to invest as I had before but I am willing to give my expertise and help. We also still have a bank account (with a small amount in it) and a logo. I do remember the help that you did give David, to Trev and the sound team and it was much appreciated. Lets have a debate on here and see what interest there is. I know that venues like the Kelham Island Tavern for interest would support it. |
Subject: RE: Sheffield Folk festival 2010 From: GUEST,David Anderson Date: 12 Oct 10 - 06:54 AM can you tell me if anyone has any thoughts about keeping Sheffield Folk festival going. We are Hebden Sound and Accusound, a microphone manufacturing company based in Sheffield producing studio mics and mics for live bands. We have done some work with the festival in past years but not had any contact with anyone for a couple of years and would quite like to put something back. We sponsor a few folk based festival and groups so would like to see something closer to home. If you have any plans or names of those who may can you let me know. email david@hebdensound.co.uk |
Subject: RE: Sheffield Folk festival 2010 From: MC Fat Date: 25 Apr 10 - 05:16 AM Only plans at present are a tentative idea of mine (Jim McDonald) to position a few sessions around the Music for Malcolm event which is scheduled for end of October. If anyone else is interested get in contact with . The Festival has lapsed because of lack of venues and lack of organisers. |
Subject: Sheffield Folk festival 2010 From: northernmunkeh Date: 24 Apr 10 - 06:51 PM Anyone got any details on this year's Sheffield Folk festival? I have heard it's in May, but the .org website has lapsed. |
