I have not been able to locate the lyrics to this song. Follows is what I think I interpreted from recording on The Ultimate Encyclopedia of American Blues Classics.

SLEEP TALKIN BLUES

You gotta bad habit daddy
Talkin in your sleep
You gotta bad habit daddy
Talkin in your sleep
You talk so much some these nights
It should be worth one dollar a piece

Do all your talking daddy
Before you go to bed
Do all your talking daddy
Before you go to bed

If you speak out of turn
Your friend will help you be _____

When you talk in your sleep
Be sure your mamma's not awake
When you talk in your sleep
Be sure your mamma's not awake

You call another woman's name
You think you wake up in a nice way

Do all your talking
Be careful as you can
Do all your talking
Be careful as you can

______________ bringin
______________ my man

I warned you daddy
Nice as a mamma could do
I warned you daddy
Nice as a mamma could do

You hear me talking to you

Any thoughts? Sure would like to have the whole song.

I went to The Red Hot Jazz Archive to hear Ma Rainey singing SLEEP TALKIN' BLUES, and they're supposed to have it, but what I heard there sounds like a totally different song. I suspect the Archive got something mislabeled.

I did find out, though, that the lyrics to SLEEP TALKIN' BLUES might be in the book Blues Legacies and Black Feminism: Gertrude "Ma" Rainey, Bessie Smith and Billie Holiday by Angela Yvonne Davis (New York: Vintage, 1999). WorldCat.org might help you find it in a library.

Yes, I think it's that Angela Davis. It might be a good read.

I found a couple more books that contain partial lyrics to SLEEP TALKIN' BLUES:

Mother of the Blues: A Study of Ma Rainey by Sandra R. Lieb (Amherst, Mass.: Univ. of Mass. Press, 1983), page 117.

and

The Message of Ma Rainey's Blues: A Biographical and Critical Study of America's First Woman Blues Singer by Sandra Robin Lieb (Thesis--Stanford University, 1976), page 141.

I think I have the whole song now:

SLEEP TALKIN' BLUES
Ma Rainey

1. You got a bad habit, daddy, talkin' in your sleep. (2x)
You talk so much some these nights, it should be worth one dollar a peep.

2. Do all your talkin' daddy, before you go to bed, (2x)
If you speak out of turn, your friends will hear of you being dead.

3. When you talk in your sleep, be sure your mama's not awake. (2x)
You call another woman's name, you'll think you wake up in a earthquake.

4. Do all your talking. Be careful as you can. (2x)
The insurance will bring in take for my man.

5. I warned you, daddy, nice as a mama could do, (2x)
You hear me talkin' to you: undertaker will be visiting you.
