Hi Q,

I'm doing some youtube video of spirituals. Here's one I arranged and did of Chilly Water, one of the Fisk Jubilee Singers songs (see above)

YouTube(Richard Matteson with Jessica Kastor):

The volumes a bit low but you can hear it.

Thanks. I plan to list not only the songs in the Spirituals Index, but also the thread as one of the resource threads. (Ditto your St. Helena group.)

Great work!

The Fisk Jubilee Singers version, No. 20 in Marsh, is posted above; Hampton had an early version as well:

I've Been a-List'ning All de Night Long

Chorus:
I've been a-list'ning all de night long,
Been a list'ning all de day
I've been a-list'ning all de night long,
To hear some sinner pray.

1
Some say that John de Baptist,
Was nothin' but a Jew,
But the Bible doth inform us
Dat he was a preacher too.
2
Go read the fifth* of Matthew,
An' a-read de chapter thro',
It is a guide to Christians,
An' a-tells dem what to do.
Cho.- I've been a-list'ning, etc.
3
Dere was a search in heaven,
An' a-all de earth around,
John stood in sorrow hoping
Dat a Saviour might be found.
Cho.-

*Versions differ; third or fifth.

R. N. Dett, 1927, "Religious Folk-Songs of the Negro as sung at Hampton Institute;" editions by Fenner, 1874, Ludlow, 1891, Moton, 1909, and Dett.

Hi,

There's only about a dozen total new songs (all the rest are in edition you're posted). The book seem to be late 1800s but I'm not sure. It also includes songs by Hampton singers but those are notated. It seem legit to me.

I'll try and put some basic info about these important early spirituals- not sure what you meant about recent versions. Here's an example:

Been A Listening

RECORDED BY: Taggart, Blind Joe (Joel).

The Five Blind Boys of Mississippi- 'Been a Listening'

1938 W.C. Handy's Collection of Negro Spirituals (book) "Been a Listening All de Day Long" (spiritual)

OTHER NAMES: "Been Listening" "Been Listening All Day" "Been Listening All The Day" "I've Been A-list'ning All the Night Long" "I Been A Listenin'"

NOTES: "Been A Listening" is from the Fisk Jubilee Singers book, "Story of the Jubilee Singers" published in 1874. A similar verse was collected by Howard Odum and appears in his 1925 book, The Negro and His Songs (Odum and Johnson). The first verse of Been a Listening is found in the John The Baptist/Lonesome Valley songs.

"Been a listening" was in the Hampton collections (Fenner, Moton, Dett) as "I've been a-list'ning all de night long," and other collections including Ballanta-(Taylor) from St. Helena, SC, 1924 and McIlhenny.
BEAR YO' BURDEN- Odum- Negro and His Songs

The Lord is listenin' all the day long,
Bear yo' burden sinner.
If you only pray He will bear you on,
Bear yo' burden sinner.

"Been a Listening" was in the repertoire of The Five Blind Boys of Mississippi and Blind Joe (Joel) Taggart, an itinerant street singer as "Been Listening All The Day." A cover of Taggart's song is on Youtube. Taggart's version combines two verses from "Dark was the Night" along with the "Been Listening" chorus:

Been Listening All The Day- Joe Taggart circa late 1920s

[fiddle]

Dark was the night and cold the ground
On which my Lord was laid
His sweat like drops of blood ran down
In agony he prayed

CHORUS 2X: I've been listening all the night long,
I've been listening all the day
I've been listening all the night long,
To hear some sinner pray.

Father, remove this bitter cup,
If such Thy sacred will;
If not, content to drink it up
Pleasures I fulfill

CHORUS 2X: I've been listening all the night long,
I've been listening all the day
I've been listening all the night long,
To hear some sinner pray.

If this is OK I'll add some info on the songs,

Richie

The edition, Richie, was not one of the original Pike or Marsh editions, but a reprinting by W. J. Gibbs, publisher of books of hymns (those no longer copyright under British regulations) and owner of a vacation camp, "Ambleside."

The added spirituals are those of "McAdoo's Fisk Jubilee Singers Trio," which I believe was an English group.

There is a thread with information about this edition, which I have, but I have not included the additional songs because I am not certain that they were sung by the original Fisk Jubilee Singers.

My copy of "Negro Spirituals or The Songs of the Jubilee Singers"   was "published by W. J. Gibbs, Bromley, Kent and Ambleside, Clacton-on-Sea," no date. I am surprised to see this book reprinted.

Go ahead and add the spirituals from the W. J. Gibbs volume, but please note their questionable source. I will edit those that you have added above to include the source.

The "Story of the Jubilee Singers, 1880, J. B. T. Marsh, is available in reprint by Cornell University Library, 2009.

Q,

The last song should be No. 140 but no number was assigned. I told you about this edition at the beginning of this thread. I assume it's from the 1800s. There is sheet music. I can post more of the songs you you can. Thought I'd wait until you finished that edition.

The Crucifixion
No. 131 From "Negro Spirituals - Or, the Songs of the Jubilee Singers."

A publication of W. J. Gibbs, UK, about 1900 and later. Sung by "Fisk Jubilee Trio" which may have been an English group.

Where you there when they crucified my Lord?
Where you there when they crucified my Lord?
Oh, sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble,
Where you there when they crucified my Lord?

Where you there when they crowned Him with the thorns?
Where you there when they crowned Him with the thorns?
Oh, sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble,
Where you there when they crowned Him with the thorns?

Where you there when they pierced Him in the side?
Where you there when they pierced Him in the side?
Oh, sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble,
Where you there when they pierced Him in the side?

Where you there when they laid Him in the tomb?
Where you there when they laid Him in the tomb?
Oh, sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble,
Where you there when they laid Him in the tomb?

Richie, pertinent discussion is welcomed. I would like to keep to old material as much as possible, however, and not include modern gospel remakes.

Andrew, the Marsh online copies were already linked by Masato. This is an edited thread, and some material will be removed, including my 'misspoke' post of 27 April.

Your comment about the 'hymn-like' nature of the arrangements, however, is pertinent and will remain. Arrangements of the spirituals were made by ministers associated with the school, and, I think, a few completely revised.

Compare In that Great Getting-up Morning as "sung by Hampton students" and posted here, with the actual Hampton version, In Dat Great Gittin'-up Mornin' as printed in Religious Folk-Songs of the Negro as Sung at Hampton Institute and also posted here, in the thread linked above with In that Great......

Sorry, I should have checked- the copy I linked is badly done and NO music. I will look for another- should be online.

I just downloaded the PDF[not the B&W] from this link and all the music seems to be there.
Does anyone sing these arrangements? They're very hymn like compared to more recent arrangements[not classical] of gospel songs.

For those interested in the Jubilee Singers, and able to access the BBC's Radio 3 by some means or other, try the following press release:

THE JUBILEE SINGERS BY ADRIAN MITCHELL adapted for radio by Celia Mitchell
BROADCAST ON BBC RADIO 4 : SATURDAY 15TH MAY 2010 AT 14.30
The play stars London black gospel choir NITROVOX, with musical direction by Felix Cross and Allyson Devenish and a stellar black cast ; Adjoa Andoh, Felix Dexter, Nadine Marshall Tanya Moodie,Alibe Parsons Clive Rowe and Ray Shell are joined   by Jonathan Pryce , for whom Mitchell wrote the play.
THE STORY
The premiere of playwright and poet Adrian Mitchell's drama about   the   extraordinary Jubilee Singers from Fisk University Nashville, who in the years immediately after the abolition of slavery brought their great sorrow songs   to Europe.
The late Adrian Mitchell, who died suddenly last year, was a much loved and revered poet, playwright and human rights campaigner. He was inspired to write this play with music by the true story of the Welsh journalist who toured with the black American Jubilee singers from their University, founded to provide education and a future for black students, in their first European tour in the late nineteenth century, when they brought their Sorrow Songs and Spirituals to the rest of the world for the first time since the abolition of Slavery. The singers enchanted Queen Victoria, and the now iconic song Swing Low Sweet Chariot was heard in England for the first time when they sang it to packed concert halls throughout the country. Mitchell's play was conceived for the theatre but it has not yet had a stage production; this is its premiere; adapted for radio under the guidance of Adrian's widow Celia . The play stars London black gospel choir NITROVOX, with Musical directors Felix Cross and Allyson Devenish and a stellar black cast ; Adjoa Andoh, Felix Dexter, Nadine Marshall Tanya Moodie,Alibe Parsons Clive Rowe and Ray Shell are joined   by Jonathan Pryce who plays the Welsh journalist who is captivated by a completely new kind of song, and hears each singer's own story and begins to be entranced by them, though he experiences the inevitable barriers which nineteenth century culture placed between men and women of different race. The director is Marilyn Imrie for Pacificus Productions

From: Q (Frank Staplin)
Date: 08 May 10 - 08:08 PM

No. 110. In that Great Getting-up Morning
"As sung by the Hampton Students"

1
I'm a-going to tell you about the coming of the Saviour,
*Fare you well! Fare you well!
I'm a going to tell you about the coming of the Saviour,
Fare you well, Fare you well!
There's a better day a-coming,
Fare you well! Fare you well !
Oh, preachers fold your Bibles,
Fare you well! Fare you well!
For the last soul's converted,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Refrain
In that great getting-up morning,
Fare you well! Fare you well!
In that great getting-up morning,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

The Lord spoke to Gabriel:
Go look behind the altar,
Take down the silver trumpet,
Blow your trumpet, Gabriel.
Lord, how loud shall I blow it?
Blow it right calm and easy,
Do not alarm My people,
Tell them to come to judgement;
Gabriel, blow your trumpet.
Lord, how loud shall I blow it?
Loud as seven peals of thunder!
Wake the sleeping nations.
3
Then you'll see poor sinners rising;
Then you'll see the world on fire;
See the moon a-bleeding,
See the stars falling,
See the elements melting,
See the forked lightning,
Hear the rumbling thunder;
Earth shall reel and totter.
Then you'll see the Christians rising;
Then you'll see the righteous marching,
See them marching home to heaven.
Then you'll see my Jesus coming
With all His holy angels,
Take the righteous home to heaven,
There they'll live with God forever.

*Fare you well is used tutti between solo lines in the Hampton version published by Fenner 1874 (Dett); in the Jubilee printings, some of the lines have been changed from those used at Hampton and there are other revisions. Dialect is preserved in the Fenner (Dett) printings of Hampton songs.

The extended Hampton version will be posted in thread 101413.

No. 53. I'm Troubled in Mind

"(The person who furnished this song, (Mrs. Brown of Nashville, formerly a slave) said that she first heard it from her old father when she was a child. After he had been whipped he always went and sat upon a certain log near his cabin, and with the tears streaming down his cheeks, sang this song with so much pathos that few could listen without weeping from sympathy; and even his cruel oppressors were not wholly unmoved.)"

Chorus:
I'm troubled, I'm troubled, I'm troubled in mind,
If Jesus don't help me I surely will die,

1
O Jesus, my Saviour, on thee I'll depend,
When troubles are near me, you'll be my true friend.
2
When ladened with trouble and burdened with grief,
To Jesus in secret I'll go for relief.
Cho.- I'm troubled, etc.
3
In dark days of bondage to Jesus I prayed,
To help me bear it, and He gave me His aid.
Cho.- I'm troubled, etc.

Personal Comment- Like several of the Jubilee songs, this one, and the anecdote, seem to bear the imprint of the missionary teachers at Fisk rather than the students and the slaves who created the early spirituals.

Didn't my Lord deliver Daniel,
D'liver Daniel, d'liver Daniel,
Didn't my Lord deliver Daniel,
And why not every man?

1
He deliver'd Daniel from the lion's den,
Jonah from the belly of the whale,
And the Hebrew children from the fiery furnace,
And why not every man?

Didn't my Lord deliver Daniel,
D'liver Daniel, d'liver Daniel,

Subject: Did Not Old Pharoah Get Lost?
From: Q (Frank Staplin)
Date: 30 Apr 10 - 09:28 PM

No. 61. Did Not Old Pharoah Get Lost?

1
Isaac a ransom, while he lay
Upon an altar bound,
Moses, an infant cast away,
By Pharoah's daughter found.

Chorus:
Did not old Pharoah get lost, get lost, get lost,
Did not old Pharoah get lost, in the Red Sea?

2
Joseph, by his false brethren sold,
God raised above them all;
To Hannah's child the Lord foretold
How Eli's house should fall.
Cho.
3
The Lord said unto Moses,
Go unto Pharoah now,
For I have hardened Pharoah's heart,
To me he will not bow.
Cho.
4
Then Moses and Aaron,
To Pharoah did go,
Thus says the God of Israel,
Let my people go.
Cho.
5
Old Pharoah said who is the Lord,
That I should Him obey?
His name it is Jehovah,
For He hears his people pray.
Cho.
6
Then Moses numbered Israel,
Through all the land abroad,
Saying, children, do not murmur,
But hear the word of God.
Cho.
7
Hark! hear the children murmur,
They cried aloud for bread,
Down came the hidden manna,
The hungry soldiers fed.
Cho.
8
Then Moses said to Israel,
As they stood along the shore,
Your enemies you see today,
You will never see no more.
Cho.
9
Then down came raging Pharoah,
That you may plainly see,
Old Pharoah and his host
Got lost in the Red Sea.
Cho.
10
Then men, and women, and children
To Moses they did flock;
They cried aloud for water,
And Moses smote the rock.
Cho.
11
And the Lord spoke to Moses,
From Sinai's smoking top,
Saying, Moses, lead the people,
Till I shall bid you stop.
Cho.

Amos,

I think "A Little More Faith" is by Rev. Gary Davis. If you know the complete lyrics, please post.

Q- actually all the lyrics at my site are there for A-B except "Happy New Year" which will appear in my H titles some day.

Several of the Jubilee songs in the link I posts are different. I'm not sure how many, I'll try and figure it out and post those.

Seems like the songs posted by Masato in the different editions are the same. Anyone see any different songs?

Thanks for posting these.

Hmmm. I think in general when you're posting a number of songs from a hymnal, it's best to put them all in one thread. If you remember, put the title of the song in the title of the message. If you forget, a volunteer will most likely change it for you.
If there's need to study a particular song and post several versions of it, then it would make sense to have a separate thread for a song (but I think I'd still post a copy in the thread from that songbook if you're posting all the songs from a book. You know, like we did for the John A. Stone songs.

It would be nice to have all 128 in Mudcat.
Perhaps each should have its own thread, or join other versions of the same spiritual in a single thread.

Some already have been posted; e. g., Jim Dixon posted He's the Lily of the Valley in thread 120649 (taken from an earlier printing, Pike, 1870s, but identical).

(A different hymn, Lily of the Valley was linked in thread 54116, words Charles W. Fry 1881, music Will S. Hays, c. 1871).

The two should not be confused.

Joe might want to comment.

Children, you'll be called on
Children, we all shall be free
Chilly Water
Come, all of God's children
Come down, angels
Come, let us all go down

Deep River
Did not old Pharoah get lost?
Didn't my Lord deliver Daniel
Don't you grieve after me
Down by the River

Farewell, my brother
From every grave-yard

Gabriel's Trumpet's going to blow
Getting ready to die
Gideon's Band
Give me Jesus
Go down Moses
Go, chain the lion down
Good-bye, Brothers
Good news, the chariot's coming
Good old Chariot
Grace
Gwine to ride up in the Chariot

Hail! Hail!
Hard trials
He arose
He rose from the dead
He's the Lily of the Valley

I am going to die no more
I ain't got weary yet
I know that my Redeemer lives
I'll hear the trumpet sound
I'm a rolling
I'm a travelling to the grave
I'm going to live with Jesus
I'm going to sing all the way
I'm so glad (no. 32)
I'm so glad (no. 107)
I'm troubled in mind
I want to be ready; or, walk in Jerusalem just like John
In Bright Mansions above
Inching along
In the River of Jordan
In that great getting-up morning
I've been in the storm so long
I've been redeemed
I've just come from the Fountain

John Brown's Body
Judgement-day is rolling round
Judgement will find you so

Keep me from sinking down
Keep your lamps trimmed and burning

Listen to the angels
Love feast in Heaven
Lord, I wish I had a come
Lord's Prayer

Many thousand gone
March on
Mary and Martha
Move along
My good Lord's been here
My Lord, what a mourning
My Lord's writing all the time
My ship is on the ocean
My way's cloudy
Nobody knows the trouble I see
Now we take this feeble body

Oh! holy Lord
Oh, Brothers are you getting ready?
Oh, give me the wings
Oh, make a-me holy
Oh, wasn't that a wide river
Oh, yes! Oh, yes!
Old ship of Zion
O redeemed
O! Sinner Man

Peter, go ring them bells
Prepare us
Reign, Master Jesus
Reign, O reign
Ride on, King Jesus
Rise and Shine
Rise, Mourners
Rise, shine, for thy light is a-coming
Roll, Jordan, roll
Room enough
Run to Jesus

Save me, Lord, save me
Shine, shine (no. 28)
Shine, shine (no. 98)
Sweet Canaan
Show me the way
Some of these mornings
Steal away
Swing low, sweet Chariot

'Tis Jordan's River
The General Roll
The Gospel train
The Rocks and the Mountains
The Angels changed my Name
There's a meeting here tonight
The Ten Virgins
The work's being done
They led my Lord away
This Old Time religion
Turn back Pharoah's army

Wait a little while
Way over Jordan
We are almost home
We are climbing the hills of Zion
We'll die in the Field
We'll overtake the Army
We'll stand the Storm
We shall walk thro' the valley
What kind of shoes are you going to wear
When Moses smote the water
When shall I get there
Wrestling Jacob
