Subject: RE: 'Oss 'Oss From: Little Robyn Date: 01 May 10 - 08:08 AM We had a phone call from Padstow a couple of hours back, as the Blue Oss came up St Edmund's Lane. The streets are really crowded with visitors as it's Spring Bank Holiday and the dancers were having bother dancing. Our friends will be having Pasties for lunch about now and we had them for dinner about 6 hours back. I'm still wearing my whites but it's just after midnight here in NZ so I'm off to bed. OSS OSS WEE OSS Keep 'er gain' Robyn |

Subject: RE: 'Oss 'Oss From: Cats Date: 03 May 10 - 04:34 AM Had a briliant time in Padstow. Very special this year as I took my young great nephew with me. His Mum was taken under the Old 'Oss skirts and he was born the following year on.... May 1st! See, it does work. He has been told for 10 years that he was special and this year chose to come from Sussex to Cornwall for his birthday as he wanted to be in Padstow and find out why he was special. His face when the Old 'Oss came out was worth the long wait. I have to admit I did have a tear in my eye. I did say he could have whatever he wanted for his birthday but we had to buy it in Padstow. With no prompting whatsoever, he chose a red necker and Mike O'Connor's book of Cornish Folk Tales. A really special Padstow May Day to remember. Wee Oss |
Subject: RE: 'Oss 'Oss From: GUEST Date: 03 May 10 - 05:43 AM His Mum was taken under the Old 'Oss skirts and he was born the following year on.... May 1st! A whole year gestation period - fantastic!! |
Subject: RE: 'Oss 'Oss From: Cats Date: 04 May 10 - 03:39 AM It is the tradition that if you are taken under the Oss' skirts you will be married within the year or if you are already married you will give birth within the year... |
Subject: RE: 'Oss 'Oss From: scouse Date: 04 May 10 - 08:00 AM Still got the tape I recorded there back in the 70's somewhere!! Must dig it out and listen again. As Aye, Phil. |
Subject: RE: 'Oss 'Oss From: Joybell Date: 04 May 10 - 06:30 PM Cats, how wonderful. Thank you for sharing everyone. May all of our days be filled with blossom and bird-song. (With a bit of rain by night.) It's coming on to Winter here but that's when we get wattle blossom and Magpie songs. I'm three generations removed from Cornwall but I love to hear about the old traditions in the home of my ancestors. Joy |

Subject: RE: 'Oss 'Oss From: Little Robyn Date: 05 May 10 - 02:54 AM Joy, were your ancesters from Cornwall? Do you know where exactly? My 3xGreat grandparents are buried at St Petrocs in Padstow and their home at Crugmeer is still inhabited but not by anyone related. Our family came to NZ in 1856 and they didn't pass on any details of Mayday to their descendants - I discovered it independently, through folk books and recordings. I had to re-educate my Grandmother and her sister. Robyn |
