So why not an addition to the steam fair program, of some Folk music (a singaround or session perhaps), and maybe a Morris side or two.

Seems to me that'd fit in right well with the whole ambience of the steam fair.

I'm sure prior contact with local folk club and session organisers would produce plenty of performers, especially if there's a beer tent on site.

Steam, coal, hot oily metal, vintage fairground, acoustic/folk musick, the rolling Sussex countryside, and ale. It all seems like a good combination to me :o)

Hope the steam rally went well Mark - John Joseph (another steam nut) was trying to work out how to be at that as well as at the Folk Ale but fortunately we persuaded him to stay! Wonder if any of the traction engine types might be able to stop by the Kentish Horse some time over the weekend? It always used to cause great excitement at Marsh Green school when they stopped overnight on the village green!

The Friday morn Dawn chorus was a right row. Never herd such a concern from birds?

I doubt there would be a lot more there on Thursday by making that session an official part of the programme, it just means we're better geared up for those who are.

If we do get lots and lots of people we might consider hiring the village hall across the road for a ceilidh, thus easing the pressure on the session.

Feel free to nitpick (as long as you don't mind if we choose to ignore you!). No point planning for an extra day if no-one really wants it. We always have a post mortem as part of the planning for next year. So I want to know what y'all think.

Having said that it WAS a brilliant weekend and I will pass on all the votes of thanks to Gina to make sure she knows how much we all appreciate her. TKH could very easily become someone's country retreat and be lost to us all if she didn't run it as a successful business. Think on this next time you pull a face at the price of a chip butty....

No doubt Gina was hoping for a quieter Thursday. We were surprised at the number of folk who had arrived before we did at around 5.00 p.m. She does work very hard, and it shows.. not the least in her need not to open until at least lunchtime on Monday. If we started officially with the Travelling Folk Session on Thursday, could there also be a session in the marquee please. There was just the right number at the session this year, and to have an official start would maybe get a considerably greater attendance. I may be wrong, lots of people still have to work on Fridays. More portaloos - yes please, or at least, have them serviced daily. No real need for showers is there? We can improvise, and have already discussed how to do it using sunlight. Anyway. Stop all being Grumpy Gusses. We had a wonderful time, if somewhat knackering.

Essex Girl.... it was a fortuitous accident... we missed the turning and went the longer but more straight way to and through Westerham.

We have decided next piggies that will be the route we take.

We are really quite chuffed at how smoothly everything went after John B and Richard B got us sorted. Looking forward to Knockers. Even considering letting TSO bring me, Crow Sister (I need to discuss this with her) and van on Thursday evening. After we get set up, he can go back home and return to Knockholt Friday after work.

Pete, The number of arrivals on Thursday caught the pub a little by surprise...they were hoping for a gentle lead-in to the manic weekend!!

Hence my question - if we're going to start Thursday evening, we need to officially start Thursday evening so everyone's prepared for it. There's a significant difference for us as organisers to the festival starting 7.30 pm on Friday with a Travelling folk session in the bar Thursday evening, and starting the festival Thursday evening with Travelling Folk. May all look the same to you guys but believe me, it isn't!! Running the folk ale is a continuous learning process for all the organisers, that's why the feedback is useful.

The friday idea is not a bad one, as quite a few turn up for the thursday night session, and quite a few more turn up before mid-day friday, so that could work too. It doesn't give you much time to set up though, so maybe a 2pm start would be better?

Chris Wood is one that comes to mind for me - very English for Richard Bridge, and as a group Mawkin:Causley. Finally my other wish would be Ian Bruce, one of the best voices around bar none.

I was 1st on site on the Thursday and I found the Padlock open on the chain around the gate.
so I went in and pitched tent.

If the padlock had been locked I would have enquired in the pub to weather I could go forth and pitched

Once pitched I went to the pub for a drink and got told off for pitching?
apparently I was supposed to await the arrival of some Tom Dick or Harry
but nothing was mentioned on this site prior to Thursday in regards to Thursday arrivals so I used me own judgement.

So yes please next year

we met a 12 wheeler but were lucky enough to have had time to stop and edge into a roadside passing bay we all braced for impact.
I had visions of me Tangle-wood becoming match wood.

On another occasion a speeding passing car passed us with a coat of paint between us?
It took all of Fisheyes skill and judgement to knock her knock mirror
'' sending it into orbit and beyond.
That was one of two time I nearly got out while the car was in motion~?

Fisheye drove very well all this Fiasco was down to the bloody Sat Nav.

We went over the same river three times?
On bridges I hasten to add.

When we eventually got to our destination which was a camp site in Dartford I leapt from the car opened me rick sack and downed a strong Beer.

these Tom Toms are bloody useful when they work which is all very well
but when they keep asking you to U Turn "Twice it happened on route when pulling a Caravan it can be a damn Rigmarole and in some cases bloody dangerous.

I have never been engaged in such a palaver before whereby a navigation aid re driving can place one in a predicament in regards too
" finding some self on a country lane pulling a caravan where if a Tractor and trailer was to meet us head on chaos would Reign?

If John Bardens Tom tom allows him to navigate around speed bumps has shown to me last year.
Why the hell cant these things have a Caravan in tow button so cars pulling caravans do not end up on country lanes and have to face the gamble of the scenario above.
all this technology is bloody dangerous?

Regular bog cleaning and re-stocking. Maybe even more bogs.

How about a shower block (or one for each gender)? I'm not sure where such could be put, or how to supply water to them (or dispose of waste water) or even if the pub's electricity supply could cope with another user - maybe a generator for the control circuitry and light: the heating of the water is usually by propane.

Water flow to the field was very slow this year and children at least were getting grumpy at the wait to fill water containers. Maybe a plan for the future is needed

So long as we can get onto field early Fri I am not bothered about having the PA on any earlier, folkies can folk without it - even Thurs if permitted.

I'd like to see at least a seeding of singers of English folk booked each festival.

If there is to be a policy of "vans here, tents there" then it should be enforced - at least two tents were placed so as to make exit much harder than it needed to be (until they came down again). But on the other hand where groups have planned to be together they may legitimately want to have vans and tents together. This is not an easy thing to sort, and it has been a bone of contention at Ely before now.

Maybe a man with a chainsaw could cut logs (and provide them on hire to users, to defray cost) to level vans when the amount of levelling exceeds the usual limit of the yellow plastic blocks sold by caravan shops.   They'd probably need re-doing every year or so (but could go on the pub fire at end of life so would not be wasted).

When mailing out tickets, include a local map showing how to access Markbeech from the other approach roads - at least a couple of users must have found the right turn into the pub carpark nigh on impossible. Alternatively sketchmap showing how to drive round in a circle to approach pub carpark from the north-east.

I think the "open mic" needs a bit of a rejig. Diligent self-promoters and bands are tending to take over. Maybe the hosts could actually ask some people in advance to do some open mic slots (John Barden would be a prime candidate for such an invitation), allocate some on a "first pre-booking" basis, some on a "first come in person" basis, and save some for allocation on the day. Just a thought.

RB: Not hard when you drive yourself,however with a Tom Tom that advices you to do a U turn where possible, it does get a little funny. My memories of driving in Kent are a little faded, so modern technowlogy was called for.

The Nags Head drunken sailor is still very much memorable both to myself and clearly a lot of others and I know some Folk would like me to do it again one or two have indeed rehearsed it with me a few times .

Indeed a child returned from some part the field the next Day (Sunday I think ?) and offered me and others with me at the time

The music was excellent and I spent a lot of time enjoying the musicians/ Bands and singers. and equally comedy.

Last year the Loo,s survived the event remaining clean with ample bog rolls through out
