Subject: BS: Concert: Ginny Hawker/Tracy Schwarz From: Ebbie Date: 08 May 10 - 09:42 PM I put this below the line because it is more of an opinion piece- after all, I don't expect *any* of you to make it to the concert. :) Have any of you heard Ginny before? She, with Kay Justice, was the Guest Artist at the Alaska Folk Festival in 1995. Put on a tremendous show, as well as leading workshops of various kinds. I loved their songs so much that I bought a copy of all the CDs and cassettes they brought along- I was not alone, they ran out. In the couple of weeks afterward, I learned 7 of their songs all at the same time. Not the most efficient method. Anyway, they're coming to Juneau again next week. Tracy's son, Peter, is part of the party. A local woman has invited the three of them to stay at her house. They'll be landing in Juneau on Friday the 14th, the concert will be on the 15th, and they'll leave again on the 17th. We hope to have a potluck and jam on Friday night. Last time they were here, I was caretaker at a house museum and we had a big jam there for them. It won't be as big this time - my friend's living room isn't big enough - but it will be great fun. Anybody else ever hear them? A bit about them |
Subject: RE: BS: Concert: Ginny Hawker/Tracy Schwarz From: katlaughing Date: 09 May 10 - 12:34 AM I really liked Fog On the Water, enough to want to learn it. Thanks for the link, Ebbie. I think this should go up top, though, as it is certainly musical and, even if we can't be there, it never hurts to learn about artists who may be new to us and whose works we might want to purchase. So...please let me know if you change your mind and I'll give them a *lift*. |

Subject: RE: BS: Concert: Ginny Hawker/Tracy Schwarz From: Ebbie Date: 09 May 10 - 01:08 AM How about a compromise, kat? Leave it down here overnight then uptop? *g* My notion is that there will be some who will want to discuss the shows AND the personalities. The folk clubbish concert series several of us began five years ago is bringing them up to Juneau from Seattle. We don't really expect to come out even but the Alaska Folk Festival Board has agreed that they'll take half the loss. Gold Street Music (the club) charges only $5 for each concert so we don't make big bucks for the kitty. For this concert we're charging standard prices: $18 early purchase, $20 at the door. Nancy, come on up! (Ah, heck, kat- move the thread any time you wish.) |

Subject: RE: BS: Concert: Ginny Hawker/Tracy Schwarz From: Ebbie Date: 09 May 10 - 01:43 PM So far as I know, Mike will be retiring this year. (Or was that last year? Suddenly, it seems to me that the date was 2009.) He wasn't at the Alaska Folk Festival this year but if I remember correctly he and his wife planned an overseas jaunt. You can always send him a PM. |
Subject: RE: Alaska Concert: Ginny Hawker/Tracy Schwarz From: artbrooks Date: 09 May 10 - 08:05 PM I think that we get to Juneau on the 17th...drat! I "spoke" to Mike about 3 months ago. He said that he expected to retire in May or June and almost immediately relocate to the Lower 48 to be closer to his grandkids. |
Subject: RE: Alaska Concert: Ginny Hawker/Tracy Schwarz From: Ebbie Date: 16 May 10 - 11:10 AM Last night Ginny did it again. Her vibrant, rich, strong, flexible voice is as amazing as ever. They put on a wonderful show (and Tracy used my guitar on stage! Never sounded better), ranging from Appalachian to Cajun to the Carter Family. This afternoon we're having a potluck (covered dish supper) for them and a jam afterwards. I'm looking forward to it. |
