Watching "Have I Got Election News for You" (the extended version) on Saturday night I was stunned to see Alistair Anderson appear over Kate Bush's shoulder (along with his concertina) doing - what they considered to be - a Gordon Brown impsersonation!

Or was I just hallucinating?...

No you weren't hallucinating - that was an ancient clip from Top of the Pops! Which I remember seeing at the time...

Links for those who didn't see it -

Have I got Election News For You - scroll to about 2:00 for the pertinent moment ...

and the whole clip, from a 1991 Wogan chart show, is here. Thanks to Leo & Ranson from concertina.net for posting these links there.

And 1991-era AA really does look remarkably like soon-to-be-ex-Prime-Minister Gordon Broon doesn't he!

Wogan *chat* show, not chart show.

And who was the unseen uillean piper who kicks in to the Kate Bush track for the final choruses? AA is, of course, one of the very best EC players going, but even he can't get that sound out of them ...

Kate Bush released a single
in 1991 with Rocket Man on one side and Candle in the Wind on the other - Ali Anderson on concertina and Davy Spillane on Uillean pipes.

amazing to see Ali Anderson on that Wogan clip. I had no idea ...

are there any other examples of legit folkies making surprise appearances on pop shows ?

there must surely be some, but off-hand I can't think of any.

I know John Peel played mandolin live on Top of the Pops on Rod Stewart's "Maggie May", but that doesn't really qualify, does it ...

John Peel didn't play the mando, he mimed it... like almost all the performers on TOTP in those days.

Stefan Hannigan popped up in the London wedding episode of 'Friends'....

Kathyrn Tickell turned up on Top Of The Pops with Sting occasionally in the 90s.

Not sure if this counts but Danny Thompson quite often appeared around that time too, memorably with Everything But The Girl in their "electronic" period.

Eliza Carthy's bass player Emma Smith was on Jools Holland as part of Gorillaz last week...

Richard Jones of Climax Ceilidh Band fame can also be seen on YouTube in his previous persona as keyboard player with the Climax Blues Band on TOTP. It's the big hair-do that gives it away...

I saw the clip and recognised him as his arms and the concertina went around Kate's neck. The thought I had was ...

"What's going to happen to her head when he swings the concertina for the church bells effect?"

Quack!
GtD.
