Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Soldier's Farewell (Dessie O'Halloran
From: GUEST,Máire

I was sitting side by side
With my fond and loving bride
As a soldier who has just returned from war
I've been away for years
From my native land so dear
Fighting for my king and country's cause
But now I have returned
My native land to mourn
I and my loving wife dying in my arms
I pressed her to my heart
Knowing soon that we must part
And these of the loving words he said

Darling live till morn
Let me see the daybreak Dawn
Let me gaze upon your beauty once again
I wished that I was slain
When to Ireland first I came
To meet with you and part so soon again

Our hands they were entwined
I was thinking all the time
When to the church I took you for my bride
You vowed you'd never part
With your fond and loving heart
Till death alone would take you from my side

Darling live till morn
Let me see the day break Dawn
Let me gaze upon your beauty once again
I wished that I was slain
When to Ireland first I came
To meet with you and part so soon again

As a soldier I must go
Oh to fight a foreign foe
Cross the stormy ocean wild and wide
In my eyes there stood a tear
One of sadness not of fear
My darling wife died in my arms that night

Darling live till morn
Let me see the daybreak Dawn
Let me gaze upon your beauty once again
I wished that I was slain
When to Ireland first I came
To meet with you and part so soon again

There's also "The Soldier's Farewell" which is the precursor to "Nova Scotia Farewell" which goes back to the 1790s.

Cheerily,
Charlie Ipcar

There's another version of the 'Soldier's Farewell' but it's not a song, it's delivered with the first & second fingers.

Sorry not to have completed this, but I am unable to access my own computer at the moment.

I downloaded the CD and so will be able to make a transcription when time and computer allow.

Watch this space.

The song you are lookng for is on a CD by Dessie called "The Pound Road" I am not certain exactly where I bought the CD but on the back of it there are 2 websites for reference, they are :- www.daisydiscs.com and www.hummingbirdrecords.com
You may be able to order the CD from one of these sites.

I'd love to help, but I don't have the recording.

It seems there are several different songs called SOLDIER'S FAREWELL. Any idea where Dessie O'Halloran got his?

I searched with Google using several phrases from the lyrics that have been posted so far, and came up with nothing.

The Bodleian Library has these, but I suspect none of them is the right song:

THE SOLDIER'S FAREWELL, OR, HEAVEN DEFEND THE RIGHT
("Farewell, farewell, old England ...")

THE SOLDIER'S FAREWELL ON GOING TO THE WAR
("Farewell, farewell, old England! ...")

THE SOLDIER'S FAREWELL TO MANCHESTER
("In coming down to Manchester to gain my liberty ...")

THE ASHANTEE WAR; OR, SOLDIER'S FAREWELL
("Oh sister I must soon be going ...")

First attempt: (Dessie's diction has never been easy to understand)

I was sitting side by side with my fond and loving bride
As a soldier who has just returned from war
I've been away for years from my native land so dear
Fighting for my king and country's ?...
But now I have returned, my native land (to mourn)?
..? my loving wife died? in my arms
I press her to my heart , ..? that we must part
and these are the loving words I said:

to be continued
