Richard & I are planning to come up & join the fun after Moira Fest, so I'm looking forward to meeting you all! |

Subject: RE: Max is coming to Whitby From: Max Date: 23 Jun 10 - 09:09 PM The flight is booked! August 19 through Sept 5. A million zillion thanks to all involved, and especially SINSULL, jacqui_c, Susan of DT, dick greenhaus and (extra special thanks to) My Guru always said for putting up with me through this process, I can be a bit hard to get a hold of sometimes (single-parenthood you know). Got ma and pa to watch the kids and Penn State has agreed not to fire me while I'm gone. My guru always said is officially in charge of my itinerary, so communicate with her if you'd like to participate in this traveling circus. We'll post details as they are firmed. I am very excited to finally meet many of you, and find no coincidence to the timing of this trip at this time of my life. THANK YOU ALL. |
Subject: RE: Max is coming to Whitby From: Susan of DT Date: 17 Jun 10 - 08:05 PM Has anything gotten settled yet? |
Subject: RE: Max is coming to Whitby From: Les from Hull Date: 26 May 10 - 07:05 AM There's no information yet on any Internet site, but it was about 2pm last year Kitty. |
Subject: RE: Max is coming to Whitby From: Herga Kitty Date: 25 May 10 - 06:06 PM And the Red Arrows will be flying over Whitby when? Kitty |
Subject: RE: Max is coming to Whitby From: My guru always said Date: 25 May 10 - 03:35 PM Still waiting flights decision and trying to fit suggestions into Max's UK Jigsaw Puzzle! |
Subject: RE: Max is coming to Whitby From: My guru always said Date: 24 May 10 - 04:40 PM Thanks gnomad!! |
Subject: RE: Max is coming to Whitby From: gnomad Date: 24 May 10 - 03:58 PM Fireworks are on Monday 23rd according to the Regatta website |
Subject: RE: Max is coming to Whitby From: Zen Date: 24 May 10 - 02:48 PM Susan... I'll look out for you in Auchtermuchty! I guess you're both primarily singers? If so, probably some good sessions in both Edinburgh and Glasgow if you're in transit via either. Zen |
Subject: RE: Max is coming to Whitby From: Dave the Gnome Date: 24 May 10 - 02:45 PM Fireworks are still on - Just checked. Dunno what night though - can anyone help? |
Subject: RE: Max is coming to Whitby From: Dave the Gnome Date: 24 May 10 - 01:38 PM If they still do them it is the last night of the Regatta - Which I guess will be the Sunday or Monday. DeG |
Subject: RE: Max is coming to Whitby From: My guru always said Date: 24 May 10 - 12:55 PM Susan, thanks for reminding me, I hadn't 'clicked' that your Scotland trip was before Whitby. Rethink needed, watch this space... Fireworks? What night would they be on? |
Subject: RE: Max is coming to Whitby From: Susan of DT Date: 24 May 10 - 08:29 AM Guys - we are coming over on Aug 13 to Edinburgh, see our going to Whitby thread. Max is unlikely to come over at that time. We considered two plans for this trip and decided on the early/Scots plan to Auchtermuchty. ZEN - We'll be in Scotland, with time between Auchtermuchty and Whitby. Will we do? |
Subject: RE: Max is coming to Whitby From: Dave the Gnome Date: 24 May 10 - 08:20 AM If the regatta still do the firework display it is worth seeing - Anyone know if they do? 198? last time I was there and it co-incided! I can only imagine the crowds now though - It was not too bad in those days but still very busy. We were also lucky enough to be at Whitby when the Moor and Coast do co-incided with the early Goth weekend - It was fantastic! Dunno who were the strangest:-) Funnily enough I am just back from a weekend at Whitby as well. Still one of my favourite places in the world - even without the folk music. DeG |
Subject: RE: Max is coming to Whitby From: My guru always said Date: 24 May 10 - 07:51 AM Thanks for the info Kitty, JHW & nutty! Not sure that we can avoid that first Whitby weekend even though it coincides with the Regatta *sigh* We were already thinking about choosing Max's outward flight to coincide with Dick & Susan's trip to Whitby which would make sense in that they could all travel together and they'll be sharing the cottage too. If we don't extract Max from Whitby till the Tuesday then maybe a Gather could be arranged for the Monday? It would be great to get Max along to Scotland (and Ireland too) but with such a limited visit due to Max's vacation dates I can't really see how we can fit it all in. Unless we miss out all the Southern Catters perhaps? |
Subject: RE: Max is coming to Whitby From: GUEST,^&* Date: 24 May 10 - 07:01 AM Sounds like a few days R & R in Ireland, with largely domestic music might be needed.... |
Subject: RE: Max is coming to Whitby From: nutty Date: 24 May 10 - 06:55 AM MGAS - under normal circumstances many catters would be at Whitby on the first weekend. However, when folk week and the regatta co-incide then many (myself included)avoid what can only descibed as akin to a rugby scrum. The town is overflowing - accommodation is at a premium and if the weather is hot, venues are unbearably full. |
Subject: RE: Max is coming to Whitby From: Zen Date: 24 May 10 - 06:37 AM It's a shame Max can't make it up to Scotland on this occasion. |
Subject: RE: Max is coming to Whitby From: My guru always said Date: 24 May 10 - 02:43 AM Ah, you're saying that Max shouldn't go to Whitby for the first weekend?? I haven't been to Whitby week myself but I heard that most Catters would be there the first weekend, is that not so? The main thing Max wants is to meet Catters, festivals are a bonus! |
Subject: RE: Max is coming to Whitby From: JHW Date: 23 May 10 - 06:08 PM Agree with Kitty - Don't come before Tuesday. |
Subject: RE: Max is coming to Whitby From: My guru always said Date: 23 May 10 - 04:37 PM Kitty, if Max stays the whole week there will be lots of Catters who won't meet him. That wouldn't be very fair, would it? |
Subject: RE: Max is coming to Whitby From: Herga Kitty Date: 23 May 10 - 12:56 PM MGAS - Whitby during the week will be better too because of the weekend coinciding with the regatta. Quite a few Catters will probably not arrive until the regatta has finished. Kitty |
Subject: RE: Max is coming to Whitby From: Susan of DT Date: 22 May 10 - 02:06 PM (and any northern England/southern Scots who want to see we lonely traveling Americans, Dick Greenhaus and I will be traveling between Auchtermuchty and Whitby the week before Whitby, Aug 16-20, post to our thread or PM) |
Subject: RE: Max is coming to Whitby From: My guru always said Date: 22 May 10 - 01:14 PM Hmmm, 10 days eh? You will be spread VERY thinly Max, going to have to get you away from Whitby or we won't get many Gathers sorted!! Possibly flying into Manchester & having the first weekend of Whitby, followed by Gathers & hosting along a route via Midlands, South Wales, London and/or Kent. Actually, London might be better midweek as quite a few Catters will be heading for Towersey at the weekend. Flying out of Heathrow would save time. Looks like Towersey, Shrewsbury, Wallingford, Fylde & Wareham are out! OK then Catters, can anyone organise Gathers (& hosting & lifts) in these areas within the time frame? PM's to ME please, suggestions welcomed!! |
Subject: RE: Max is coming to Whitby From: Max Date: 22 May 10 - 10:47 AM Sorry guys, been up to my ass in alligators. Gotta get my priorities straight right? Anyway, I'm in for about 10 days and am letting the wind take me (that is, any catter that wants me). Thanks again, to everyone. Still hard to believe this is really happening. |
Subject: RE: Max is coming to Whitby From: Susan of DT Date: 22 May 10 - 10:17 AM Max has finally surfaced, so arrangements should get made soon. |

Subject: RE: Max is coming to Whitby From: Soldier boy Date: 19 May 10 - 08:36 PM I am certainly looking forward to meeting up with Max during Whitby Folk Week and will keep on looking out for his itinery and where us Mudcatters can gather together to join him. Whitby Folk Week is a very good choice Max. I'm sure you won't regret it and we will all make you very welcome indeed. Chris |

Subject: RE: Max is coming to Whitby From: GUEST,Guest - puzzled Date: 16 May 10 - 07:08 PM Thanks Joe I am not so puzzled now. I presume you are from the other side of the pond too and that Max is an accomplished guitarist. |
Subject: RE: Max is coming to Whitby From: Joe Offer Date: 15 May 10 - 03:34 PM You have a point, "puzzled." Mudcat would be a more interesting place for visitors if thread originators would take the time to ensure that the first post explains the topic of discussion. Max is Max Spiegel, the owner of Mudcat. He's somewhere in his mid-30s now, but was much younger when he started this thing in 1996. Gee, he may well be approaching the age of 40, but I think he still has all his teeth and most of his hair. Max has a weekly radio program on wpsu in State College, Pennsylvania. We really have no idea where State College is, but we believe it has a university and that it is located someplace in the middle of nowhere - which is where everything in Pennsylvania is located. Oh, and Max plays a mean guitar and sings pretty well, too. You can see him on his YouTube channel. -Joe- |
Subject: RE: Max is coming to Whitby From: GUEST,Puzzled! Date: 15 May 10 - 02:44 PM Who or what is Max?? If we knew everything the internet would not be needed. Ta |

Subject: RE: Max is coming to Whitby From: bill\sables Date: 14 May 10 - 05:35 PM Scarpi do I detect you are trying to organise a lift from Iceland to Grimsby on a trawler?. If you are Doug Chadwick lives in Grimsby. |
Subject: RE: Max is coming to Whitby From: GUEST,Skarpi Date: 14 May 10 - 04:14 PM right , have to look into that , hmmmm kv Skarpi |
Subject: RE: Max is coming to Whitby From: Les from Hull Date: 14 May 10 - 10:01 AM It's 141.300403 kilometres or about 2 hours 19 minutes by car(according to various Internet sites). But if you're travelling from Grimsby by public transport you can get the train to Doncaster, change for York and then you've got various options for Whitby (Coastliner bus direct to Whitby or train to Scarborough then bus to Whitby). All this takes 4/5 hours. This site will help plan journeys in the UK by public transport journey planner Perhaps some kind Grimsby mudcatter will see this and offer lifts. See you in Whitby! |
Subject: RE: Max is coming to Whitby From: GUEST,Mr Red Date: 14 May 10 - 09:56 AM Does that mean he won't be a Sidmouth? I can't do both (well I could but for the money). Where else will he be that I can't get to cheaply? (Think Gloucestershire and maybe Towersey). |
Subject: RE: Max is coming to Whitby From: Zen Date: 14 May 10 - 09:14 AM Around 150km by road Skarpi. |

Subject: RE: Max is coming to Whitby From: Rob Naylor Date: 14 May 10 - 07:51 AM If not the Wail, then how about a day or two in Kent or East Sussex, just doing clubs/ sessions? The folk scene's so active down here that it would be a pity for him to miss it. |
Subject: RE: Max is coming to Whitby From: Dave the Gnome Date: 14 May 10 - 07:49 AM Hey Sue - It was fine before you and Dick drowned it! :D |
Subject: RE: Max is coming to Whitby From: Susan of DT Date: 14 May 10 - 07:48 AM Liz I'm not sure Max will go to the Wail, but Dick and I are probably going. Have you enough camping gear for us? Hopefully in better shape than what Dave the Gnome lent us for Fylde a few years ago... Susan |
