Subject: Tech: Cookies on Opera?
From: Gurney
Date: 10 May 10 - 07:19 PM

I haven't got one, and nor can I get one to work.
Opera has gone through two updates in the past two weeks, and now does not seem to recognise my cookie. It must be there, somewhere, because Mudcat won't reset it, but I can't post as a Guest, nor start threads, nor search. The submit button is missing, as is the search box.
Other cookies work.
Oddly, I transferred my 'Favourites' to Internet Explorer (using it now) and the cookie transferred, along with other cookies.

Any comments or suggestions?

Don't know if this has anything to do with your problem, but Joe Offer mentioned on a different thread that there are currently some sort of problems with the membership process on the main Mudcat site, but they didn't seem to be happening on the "test site" where Max is playing with possible new features.
Try going to http://dev.mudcat.org/ and see if you have better luck there.
Quack!

Geoff, that didn't work. I keep going around in circles - log out, reset cookie- didn't reset -try logging out......
I assume that, because the cookie is there, it won't reset, but somehow Mudcat doesn't recognise it.

Are cookies on the computer, or are they in the browser? I'm reluctant to remove them manually, in case I can't get on at all.

I did a full virus scan yesterday.
I'm assuming that Max is altering Mudcat so that guests can't post, because (on Opera) I have no submit button and no search box.

Cookies are in the browser...you 'could' have 5 browsers, 3 with cookies set & 2 without...etc. Some setting in Opera is awry.

If you have a later version of Opera (I'm looking in 10.10 right now), go to 'tools'->preferences->advanced->cookies...and check settings..especially 'manage cookies', where you can tell the browser exactly how to handle **Mudcat** cookies.

Bill, I'm on version 1053, newly downloaded and installed, and no change.
I don't know HOW to manage cookies. Mudcat cookies are on there, seemingly, six of them.
Can't 'tick' the buttons in Opera like you do in other programs.
Can't seem to find the cookies on I.E. to compare them.

Would you suggest I delete them individually and reset? If I can!

Opera is noticably faster than I.E.

I hope I've not become a persona non grata here!

If in doubt copy the cookie files to another location, so you can put them back if needed. Once you have done that, delete the ones in the original location and try logging onto Mudcat from scratch. See what happens!
Hopefully you should get a bunch of new cookies that work.
Quack!

I am not sure what is wrong... I am now in 10.53, and my 'current' cookie setting is "accept cookies only from the site I visit". Then, I have about 6-7 from Mudcat, and it all works fine.

(Each cookie can be 'edited' separately, as to 'secure' etc., but I have never bothered to mess with those as long as all is working)

Try reading thru the help page on cookies and see if anything is different from your known settings.

Latest effort. On Opera. Removed the Mudcat cookies in Opera Tools. They seemed gone. Couldn't reinstall them from Mudcat. Mudcat was still the same, with no 'search' box in the top left corner of forum page and no submit button on the Reply to Thread box. Other links missing, too.
I used Add and Remove to uninstall Opera and right-click-delete to remove the desktop shortcut.
Reinstalled Opera 10.53 from yesterday's download.
What!!! Still had the Speed dial page complete! Still couldn't download cookies. Still no Search Box nor Submit button

To Hell with it. Downloaded and installed Firefox (on that now.) Asked it NOT to import cookies.   Mudcat cookies reinstalled and working, as you see.
Oddly, when I first used Firefox to visit this forum, the Search Box was there!
I'm going to remove Opera file-by-file from Search.

Check out the addons for FF - lots of useful stuff like toolbars that allow you to do html coding for underline, bold, italics, etc and leetkey - that allows lots of useful text manipulators etc, also download helpers, etc.

"Still couldn't download cookies. Still no Search Box nor Submit button"

That is beyond weird. I suspect the problem lies somewhere other than Opera, but of course you can't deal with that. You need it to WORK, no matter where the problem is.

No problem logging in to the Mudcat with Opera for me.

I assume you've tried reinstalling Opera. Might be worth doing it again anyway.

Well, I removed all files that contain 'Opera' in the filename using 'search,' downloaded and installed a fresh copy of 10.53, and I've done that TWICE, running CCCleaner betweeen installs.
Surprise surprise. Still no Search-Box or Submit button in Opera, still can't install a cookie. Just cycles to Log-out and back.
I suspect something in Opera Speed Dial. It proved tough to remove, and I'm not sure I got all of it. Possibly something that doesn't have Opera in the filname.

I'm giving up on Opera and using Firefox for now. Thanks for the suggestions, all.   Chris.

Oncew you get used to FF, you'll never regret dumping Opera.

My son agrees with you, he uses it. They look pretty much alike.

The problems that I've had, as I said, may be in Speed Dial. It is back, and fully populated, which it shouldn't be.

I've been using Opera since my early days on the computer, when an update wrecked I.E., and I had to find an alternative.
