Subject: Lyr Req: Whaling Warning Song From: GUEST,CoriSCapnSkip Date: 11 May 10 - 03:41 AM Did anyone catch the PBS "American Experience" on whaling? The pbs.org server must be down; I can't get it to open with any browser. Near the end of this incredible two-hour program, anyone know the song the dying survivor of the "Essex" was singing? (There was dialogue and narration over it.) It sounded like "The Buffalo Skinners" but for whaling. If authentic, it would be the same type of song far predating "The Buffalo Skinners" or "Canaday I-O" which inspired it. Basically your classic work song warning BEWARE THIS JOB! There is an audio CD for the program but don't know what's on it. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Whaling Warning Song From: SINSULL Date: 12 May 10 - 01:03 PM Watch it on line here: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/americanexperience/schedule/ I tuned in too late to see the scene with the sailor. If you have not read "In The Heart Of The Ocean", put it on your to do list. The story of the Essex drawn from written records of the time. Sept 11, I sat locked in a court house in NYC reading the scene of the whale attack while people went mildly nuts all around me. Maybe it contributed to my impression of the book. SINS |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Whaling Warning Song From: Gibb Sahib Date: 12 May 10 - 05:26 PM At the beginning, 1:19, he's singing "Coast of Peru." I can't make it out, but it sounds like he may drift off onto another song. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Whaling Warning Song From: GUEST,CoriSCapnSkip Date: 14 May 10 - 05:02 AM Well, it's not included in the transcript or among the couple of songs as bonus material on the website. It occurs at 1'19" into the video and all I can make out is, "Come all ye poor sailors who rounded Cape Horn." |
