Alexis - Mike Hessle might be one of the names you were trying to remember?

Jinks now singing with Rowena and Sylvia in Thorn and Roses.

Also worth a listen whilst on the Lizard theme, is (were) Jinks' Stack. Out of Coverack (well Jinks used to be)with Graham O Callaghan and a couple of others whose names escape me.
Did Holmfirth FF 6 or so years ago. Absolutely wonderful.

Thank you very much everyone especially Jim, the fishermen from Cadgewith Cove are the ones I was looking for, and I've duly ordered them on Amazon. Cheers!

There is a new outfit "Fisherman's Friends" out of Port Isaac in Cornwall. They have two CDs out at the moment, "Suck Em' And Sea" and "Another Mouthful From...". They have there own website.

Kitty;
The only name the BBC index gives is William Barber, but that was in 1956 - long before your time I should think.

After my first Sidmouth festival in August 1968 I went on to Cornwall to visit friends in Cadgwith, along with other members of Herga folk club who had spent the week in Sidmouth, and we sang in the pub with the fishermen. The only fisherman whose name I can remember was Chrissy. (And even though it was so long ago, I'm pretty sure it was Chrissy, not Chris, which may be why I've remembered!)

I think I've found it. I was intrigued because the two titles you mentioned were recorded by the Coppers, who were neither fisherman nor from Devon, but it seems they collaborated with the Cadgwith fishermen in a 1950s album called Sea Songs and Shanties, issued by Saydisc, and Peter Kennedy was indeed involved.

You can sample the tracks here:

Incidentally, it you're Googling for this it's useful to know that there's no "e" in Cadgwith.

There were a group of Cornish fishermen recorded by the BBC in the mid-1950s, indexed as 'The Cadgewith Cove Fishermen's Chorus'.
The songs included Spanish Ladies, Rio Grande, Drunken Sailor, Sailor's Alphabet, My Boy Billy.....
I have no doubt Peter Kennedy issued it, in which case, Dick Greenhaus would be the one to ask.

If it was Devon, it might be the Exmouth Shantymen, who now, I think have 2 CDs to their credit.(With some hilarious pseudonuyms for performers!) They are at least as good as the ones from Port Isaac (Cornwall) who have recently hit the BBC news and other headlines.

Hi there. I once had a tape done for me by a friend of fishermen singing, from Devon I think, or at least from that neighbourhood. It sounded a lot as if it were recorded in a pub and thee were some wonderful versions of 'The Claudy Banks' "Warlike Seamen' and so on. Does anyone know the name of this album, or more details about the singers? I would like to buy it properly. Thanks.
