I wandered around Tewkesbury Abbey recently snapping pics of the many foliate heads all painted up in red and gold, and found something else quite charming, see here:
Angel playing the bagpipes (not my photo, as I don't have my pics online)

In fact there's a whole folk club going on up there in the 'clouds', including fiddle, tabor and of course naturally enough, harp.

The only thing I didn't spot in the Angel folk club was any real ale. So those of you planning an obit in the near future, might want to smuggle some in past St. Peter (probably not an issue under those voluminous robes), but otherwise it would appear that there is a folkie heaven..

Any more examples of the same elsewhere?

Manchester Cathedral has this
dulcimer player
along with other carvings of musicians playing stringed and wind instruments, including portative organ, shawm, bagpipes with arm bellows and a single chanter, Irish-style bagpipes with a chanter and one drone, trumpet and (at the West Tower, end) a
recorder .

Sometime soon people will use this as an argument for the continuing existance of pagan / pre-christian influences in churches / life / everything

Best wishes

Les, I've yet to spot any bagpipe or dulcimer playing angels on any of the stone circles or ancient tombs I've visited, so hopefully we're safe from such conclusions for a bit?

Otherwise thanks for the Manchester examples Howard, any more folkie angels anyone?
