I am listening to my copy of Norman's CD, again...and, I LOVE it just as much as when I received it. Some excellent songs, tunes, singing, etc. Still highly recommend this CD and esp. LOVE TAMARACK JACK! Great song!!

From what my mother told me of the translation, its about a little boy that fell through the ice of a river??It is very old as her grandad would sing it to her when she was a little girl..She denied it of the cd telling me i was foolish,but a time before she said it to me..I am off to JAMACA mon where ther better be no ice .tomorrow..YEP EEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!! thanks

Everything around the Dartmouth(Halifax twin city)area is posted as Micmac. But for reasons I do not know the natives want to be known as Mi'kmag. Much like right here close to me. It was always called Caughnawana, but now it has been changed to Kahnawaka. I sure don't have a problem with the name changes and I have never heard anyone objecting to it. Must have been the white man that gave the original. That is the names that us folks were brought up with.

Norm, thanks for telling us more about each musician per track, esp. My Rog has a good ear and picked out the spoons before I did. He had an uncle who played all types of instruments including being pretty wicked with a set of spoons.

It was obvious to both of us what a wonderful and professional mix you had for musicians and your own songs are simply super. I love them all, but the one that will NOT get out of my ear is Tamarack Jack! Your mom leading into it sets the stage so well and is just perfect. The pace, tune and words just get me going. I can help but do a powwow shuffle dance and sing along whenever I listen to it!

3 songs .. that's more than enough for a 45...
I still have one of mine unplayed plus an LP made back when vinyl was King... don't laugh too much.. a lot of audiophiles prefer this format
Prine re-released "Fair and Square" on vinyl

I'd love to do a 78... a thick one, lots of shellac

Well,well, this is certainly nice to wake up to..The reviews ..Many thanks..Ckut played (FROM THE PULPIT TO THE PRISON) last Thursday i was plesantly surprised .I dout had it been fifteen years or so ago,it would a been spun? Brave on their part . It was a difficult song to write although it came to me very fast.Lets say it was a difficult song to release.However,My friends that worked with me on the CD are the BESTTTTT .
Ron Bankly delivers music scapes that makes Van Gough look for his lost ear.
Steve Smith on cello in (ANGEL WITH A BROKEN HEEL),makes the heart question the new direction it`s traveling.
Murry Webster with his 100 Hammond organ has the church comming at you for a wedding or a funeral at the same time..Beautiful job.
Daniel Faille on bass whome i never knew came on board and did a brillient job on this complex project and has become my new found friend..
Gary Dillon up from New Jersey for a weekend in Prince Edward County got roped in Paul Johnson`s studio(through the cedars music productions( and laid down a great fiddle track.   
Jake DeVries on jews harp .Christina Grave`s call of the copper skin queen. And of course my Mother ,Alice Doucette doing the intro to Tamarack Jack sung in French and Mig Ma or Mic Mac not too sure how to spell it,but it sure sets a spell..Tonya my daughter on SOME MOTHERS SON,puts the song from a mothers perspective.
GONE FISHING got a great feel with Jean Bourdeau on spoons that made the CD a little lighter in the right place.
Quentin Meek a gentleman Ron introduced me to i am ever greatful for..Unassuming and low key and excellent musician guided me in a direction i had at no time fully understood its course.There were a lot of magic moments in this studio.
Thanks to these friends the project sailed and Quentin was at the helm I trusting his navigating..Many thanks really..norm

A little note. "Angel With a Broken Heel" is about a very young lady on the streets that Norman tried to save. Even Norman has a hard time singing it.

Singer, Songwriter Tom Ghent (Whiskey, Whiskey) had this to say about Norman Doucette:

I don't know exactly what it is, but, somehow, the northern US and Canada, seem to produce a variety of music, which is, at the same time, both country and folk.....a type of music which I find far more palatable and exciting than the watered down stuff that, all too often, seems to dominate the airwaves. Recently, I was fortunate enough to be in Canada sharing a bill with friend Ron Bankley and my long lost Greenwich Village contemporary, Bruce Murdoch. While I was up there, Ron arranged for me to be on the bill with singer/ songwriter, Norman Doucette, who was performing at the out door stage behind he Lil Crow Cafe in Tyendinaga, Mohawk Territory, Ontario.
Well, Norm, aside from being a great guy, is a refreshing throwback to the music of the1960s! There is a haunting vocal similarity between him and my old friend Paul Siebel, writer of such 60s classics as "Louise" and "Spanish Johnny"....Much of Norm's music has an almost ragtime feel, which cleverly, and often humorously, wraps itself around some extremely serious subject matter!
I often found my foot tapping while he sang about war, soup kitchens, lost love, and even child molestation. Then suddenly the tempo slowed, and Norman's expressive voice tackled the tragic death of a drug addicted prostitute in "Angel with a Broken Heel", it's haunting refrain, "everybody thinks your coming home" still resonates!
Norm throws himself into each song with an abandon that makes it easy to see why he's been lovingly nicknamed "Stormin" Norman, by his friends! Both I, and the audience sitting outside on that beautiful evening were treated to a truly moving performance.
Since returning home to Nashville, I have often listened to Norman's newly released 12 song CD, "Some Mother's Son". The songs are all originals, and Norman, backed by a contingent of excellent studio musicians, is just as exciting and convincing as he was that evening, months ago in Ontario!

I think the CD is brilliant. The songs have fairly wide appeal, although the pictures they paint are detailed enough to get a feel for the people in them. Real people, powerful ideas, tied together in a delicate balance of unpretentiousness and unexpected but perfect language. Kinda John Prine-ish.

Thanks Norman--I believe your music deserves to be more widely heard.

Thanks for reminding me Kat. I picked the CD up from Adrien a couple of weeks ago when I went to Bruce's concert and have been meaning to tell Norman how much I like it. The writing is from the heart and the tunes and arrangements complement the lyrics perfectly. The delivery is genuine. Well done Norman and everyone who had a hand in putting it together. A special mention to the backing vocalists.

I LOVE that song, Adrien and Norman! We just got your CD and both of us listened to it this morning. Rog and I both really love it, but that song, esp. the beat and sound of the rattles which remind me of powwow dances we've been to, really went to my heart. All of the songs are great, your ability to present in so many different styles so naturally without artifice, is really impressive, Norman. Thank you both, so much. Oh and you should have seen Roger's ears perk up when he heard your mom...it reminded him so much of his relatives..granny, aunts and uncles...all from Quebec. What a precious treasure that recording is. My Rog says he'd love to hear what you do in French, too.

Anyway, I hope you can *see* the smiles in our hearts and on our faces. We are most grateful and to all we send a big Thank You!

FYI.. another project Quentin has been working on for awhile and will be ready this summer is by Dave Andrews from Ottawa.. he's a really superb singer. I finally met him this week, but felt like I knew him already as I had contibuted several tracks to the project.
He does a cool version of 'Those Dance Hall Girls' by another ol' compadre, Alan Fraser..

yeah Quentin's great... a longtime friend whom I met in a coffee house in Kitchener Ontario back in '69. He moved to Montreal later and worked at Studio Six where he did the first albums by Les Seguins, Jim et Bertrand, Gilles Valliquette ( who went on to become Quebec music legends) There were lots of others... We lost track of each other over the years but he contacted me last year while I was down south. We ended up pulling all the pieces of 'Thunder Thieves' together last fall.
It took a lot of time and skill to meld 7 different studios into a consistent sound.. we'll be cookin' up some more stew in the not-too-distant, no doubt...

Oops!! forgot to mention the Engineer's name. Quentin Meek is the gentleman directing Norman's work.
Just an added note to some who maybe wondering. Norman's song is not of personal experience. We were both alter boys for a number of years and have nothing but high respect to those priest we served. They were great influences on our lives and their service to there community was in most cases beyond their call of duty. Back to music please.
