Subject: Lyr Add: Lollipop (Dixson and Ross)
From: Q (Frank Staplin)
Date: 22 May 10 - 04:38 PM

Lyr. Add: LOLLIPOP
Julius Dixson and Beverly Ross, 1958

Chorus:
Lollipop, lollipop
O lolli, lolli, lolli,
Lollipop, Lollipop. ("pop")
(Sung three times at the beginning)

1
Call my baby lollipop,
Tell you why,
His kiss is sweeter than an apple pie,
And when he does his shaky, rockin' dance,
Man, I haven't got a chance.
I call him-
Lollipop, lollipop,
Oh lolli, lolli, lolli,
Lollypop, lollipop.
2
Sweeter than candy on a stick
Huckleberry, *chimry or lime
He'd be your pick
But lollipop is mine
I call him-
Lollipop, etc.
3
Crazy way he thrills me,
Tell you why,
Just like a lightning from the sky
He loves to kiss me till I can't see straight-
GEE, MY LOLLIPOP IS GREAT!
I call him-
Lollipop, etc.

As sung by the Chordettes

Chords at http://www.guntheranderson.com/v/data/lillipop.htm

*chimry- that's what it says- you tell me. Not part of my childhood vocabulary.

All youse guys singing the one about candy, straighten up!

Missing line:
Sweeter than candy on a stick
Huckleberry, *chimry or lime

IF YOU HAD A CHOICE

He'd be your pick
But lollipop is mine
I call him-
Lollipop, etc.

Dare I ask - what has this to do with folk or blues?

Thanks for the missing line. My sloppiness.

SINS< of course it's folk. This timeless classic has entered every major language and inspired other versions, including "My Boy Lollipop" (hmmmm, I should add the lyrics). "Die lollipop melody" was popular in Germany. "My Girl Lollipop" a hit in Italy. I could add others, but I will refrain. These examples are sufficient.

"Lollipop" is used in Dell commercials. An obvious rhyming pair, 'laptop - lollipop' inspired their version.

Also listen to a changling, "If all the little raindrops were lemon drops and lollipops"- oh, superb rhyming; quickly entered kidfolk.

"My Girl Lollipop" the Italian bombshell:

Chorus:
La mia ragazza Lollipop, fate il mio cuore andare Giddy up,
È possible impostate il mio mondo in fiamme,
tu sei il mip unico deiderio,
Si la mia ragazza Lollipop.
"POP"

A prime example of modern folk!

Oh, we must have a little more of the Italian hit!

La mia ragazza Lollipop,
fate il mio cuore andare Giddy up,
È possible impostare il mio mondo in fiamme,
tu sei il mio unico desiderio,
Si, la mia ragazza Lollipop,
la mia ragazza Lollipop,
La mia ragazza Lollipop,
la mia ragazza Lollipop,
La mia ragazza Lollipop,
la mia ragazza Lollipop,
La mia ragazza lollipop,
LOLLIPOP OOH POCO.
"POP"

Lyr, Add: My Boy Lollipop
Ska, Michael Smith

My boy Lollipop, you made my heart go giddy up,
You are as sweet as candy, you're my sugar dandy,
Ha, ho my boy Lolipop,
Never ever leave me,
Because it would grieve me,
My heart told me so,
I love ya, I love ya, I love ya so,
That I want ya to know,
I need ya, I need ya, I need ya so,
And I'll never let ya go,
My boy Lollipop,
You make my heart go giddy up,
You set my world on fire,
My boy Lollipop, my boy Lollipop.

From "The Munchkin Land Song" (extract)

Lollipop Guild-
We represent the Lollipop Guild
The Lollipop Guild, the Lollipop Guild
And in the name of the lollipop Guild
We wish to welcome you to Munchkin Land.

With the Munchkin song, "The Witch is Dead." That song deserves a thread of its own.
