Must admit, I noticed the 'strike' and thought, 'that's neat, never seen that in a title before'. Now I know why!

Hi, Bert-
Jeff's a pretty smart cookie.
He reviewed all the autoSpam posts were were getting, and picked out phrases and conventions that were commonly used in Spam but not in normal posts, and he blocked text that contained those elements.
Then somehow, he set up a information messages that told the poster "your message contains a prohibited HTML tag" - or whatever was appropriate.
I think I know of most of the blocks he set up, but I was unaware that he had blocked HTML in message titles. I can get around the blocks and edit things in, which is what happened in this case.
Jeff had to be pretty clever in creating the blocks, because he didn't want to interfere with normal posting. One block that does annoy some people is that Guests cannot post more than a certain number of links in a message - this is to prevent the page-long Spam messages we were getting that had nothing but links to porn sites or "performance-enhancing" medications.
That being said, I'd also like to say I wish Jeff had time to spend with us nowadays. I really enjoyed working with him. SWe used to stay up late at night, coming up with ideas for tweaking Mudcat to work better. I suppose we made attempts at humor in some of those "tweakings," but not many. Max is usually the one responsible for those...

OK, OK, I plead guilty. I was trying to be clever, and got outsmarted by my own cleverness.

The thread title originally read Clegg resigns UK

The thread originator realized his mistake, and said it should be Vince Cable resigns UK


But the humo(u)r of it all got the best to me, so I changed it to

Clegg Vince Cable resigns UK

....not knowing that would prevent others from posting. Sorry about that. I'll go hide in the corner in shame.

And yes, I know I've told others not to use HTML or special characters in thread titles because it affects searchability, but I didn't know it had other effects. It must have tripped one of the anti-Spam blocks Jeff has in place.
