Subject: BS: name needed for community choir
From: GUEST,Jiggers
Date: 28 May 10 - 02:59 PM

Hi,

my community choir is looking for a name. We do a range of stuff including African chants, sea shanties and other folk, contemporary pop, old classics (e.g. country roads). These are usually arranged in 4 part harmonies by my two teachers.

We are based in Cardiff in the UK but I think a location independent name would be good.

Here are my ideas so far so you can see the lines I am thinking along :

Dawn Chorus
Keynotes
Accidental Harmonies

Does anyone else have any good ideas ? Note that Grace Notes and Devil's Interval are already in use by bands.

The "Accidental Harmonies" suggestion reminds me that my wife used to sing with a group who called themselves "Grevious Bodily Harmony"!

That said, "The Accidentals" or "Passing Notes" might be better...

I like that one , it might make the group laugh.

There is already a band called the Accidentals based in Sussex.
Passing notes is a possibility.

Thanks for your suggestions

Jiggers

Thanks for the suggstions.

I like the simplicity of Take Note. It contrasts nicely with hemi-semi-demiquaver UnDiminished.

I spent some time with a super womens harmony group - 'Loud Mouth Women' they're still going strong as far as I know although I can't get to it any more.

My husband called us 'the Big Mouth Birds!'

I will make some of these suggestions to my group, but I won't be surprised if we actually get beyond something undynamic like Cardiff Community Choir (yawn)

Hi,

it meets in a chruch hall in Canton. It has moved there recently from Severn Road School. If it moves again, who knows if it will be even be in Canton. I think there is already a group called the Canton Chorus. Canton Chanters and the Canton Cantoiri are possibilities as long as we stay in Canton. We were introduced once as the Canton ladies choir - quite annoying for the us men in the group at the time - all 2 of us :-)

Hi Jiggers,
Whatever you call it get the names Canton and Cardiff in it and you've got the attention of millions right away, make them press that button !
Here's one... Canton us not Cardiff, and of course don't forget it's the home of the greatest female singer... no I'm not Welsh !

Good Luck

Sorry I can't help with the name - good luck, but I don't think there's ever been a better name for a choir than one in Dundee, which singer/songwriter Michael Marra works with occasionally. They're called :
"Loadsaweeminsingin'".

At the end of the day, it'll be the women that decide, so it will probably be something flowery and spiritual that provokes images of summer meadows and well being.

Song Spirit
Soul Music

How about Llantwit Mixolydian?

I was a member of a community chorus in California named 'The OK Chorale'.
The group is defunct so the name is available but, perhaps it's not as relevant a name in your area as it is in the Western US.

I don't think Cardiff should be in the name as there are multiple community choirs in Cardiff.

Someone from my choir has suggested, A Choired Taste.
