I've been seeing his videos for a couple years. I'd also recommend checking out Bard of Cornwall, a Canadian that posts a new video every time he learns a new song. Mostly folk and traditional. Great voice.

Raymond has sung a bunch of coal mining songs, including a Woody Guthrie song that had never been put to music ("The Dying Doctor") and some that had never been covered before (e.g., James Low's "Miner's Lullaby"). Some of my favorites that he has covered are: "The Testimony of Patience Kershaw", "The Big Hewer", "Lawrence Jones", "The Mountain", and "No Christmas in Kentucky".

Also, check out an original song that Raymond wrote and sang about a Kentucky coal miner, Charles Scott Howard, who has stood up for safety in the mines for many years. The song, titled "Big Coal Don't Like This Man At All", was based on a Huffington Post article about Mr. Howard written by Dave Jamieson on 9/14/11.

Thanks to Raymond Crooke, I was able to learn the chords to "Bury Me Not On The Lone Prairie"--both of them. I had been trying to fit the tune I know to the many and varied chords required to play an alternate minor key melody. Now Brother Crooke is my go-to guy for hearing and seeing a song done simply and well, the way I would wish to do it.

I am impressed with Raymond Crookes work in Keeping The Old Songs Alive so much so that I have included him on my Claims To Fame Website as the guy was decent enough to pass nice comments on my work. Unfortunately, I am not a purist folky so my stuff might not be popular with some Mudcatters but while I believe Tradition must be preserved I also think there is room for innovation otherwise we would never have had Major and Minor scales.

Checked him out on Youtube yesterday, doing some Sydney Carter songs. Raymond is an amateur in the best sense of the word.

Interesting, I also found about him by searching for Sydney Carter songs. But he has covered an amazing amount, and he is brilliant. I subscribed to his Youtube channel, and I get a notification of something new he has done most days. Raymond, if you read this, thanks very, very much.

Raymond is my inspiration; his channel prompted me to learn guitar, and he's even kindly covered a couple of my own songs (both ones I wrote for Mudcat, actually). He's well past 2,000 videos by now!

One of Raymond's latest ventures is to try and upload the Complete Child ballads, constantly adding to them. Once completed it will probably be the most comprehensive collection of its type. It is a great way to preserve the heritage of these classic folk songs and the one voice, one guitar makes them as authentic as possible. Blondel lives on in Raymond.

Raymond Crooke on youtube My aim on this channel is to share my love of folk music. My posts include original as well as traditional songs and covers of my favourite singer song-writers, such as Bob Dylan, Woody Guthrie and Eric Bogle.
I have been singing folk songs for about 50 years, and play guitar (badly) and fiddle (even more badly).
I have produced 5 CDs:
Axis of Evil and other True Stories
Laws of Chance
Gospel Ship
Pigs Might Fly and other Politically Incorrect Ballads
Who Needs Reality? (with Lew Dite and Ukulele Katie)
I have also collaborated with Lew Dite on a CD of American folk songs simply called "Songs".
I hope you enjoy my channel. All comments are appreciated, including constructive criticism.
Thank you to all those who have subscribed and/or commented.

Raymond Folk This is my folk song page. I have been singing folk songs for over fifty years, and I am using this site to share my songs and information about them. You are welcome to add information and links to your songs.

Wise Owl Story Books Ray's love of words started very early in life as he wrote and read stories for his siblings. Story telling and writing turned into a career as an English teacher which has taken Raymond and his wife Yoong on many travels. Today he is a talented folk singer who writes his own lyrics.
