To ask the obvious question - was it A Long Way to Tipperary before Tipperary was (So) Far Away? The Sean Treacy sets are later, obviously, than the WWI chestnut. Does the "Tipperary (so) far Away" phrase occur anywhere before it?

I have an old collection of Tipperary songs somewhere .... must check it out.

Regards

SEAN TREACY (TIPPERARY SO FAR AWAY)

The [G] sun had set with it`s [D] golden rays
And the [C] bitter [D] fight was [G] over
Our [D] brave boys sleep [C] beneath the [D] clay,
On [G] this earth they [C] are no [D] more
The moon shone over the [C] battle[D]field
Where a [G] dying [C] rebel [D] lay
His [G] arms were crossed and his [D] body stretched,
His [C] life blood [D] flowed [G] away

There were none to weep for you Sean Treacy
Or were keen in to sing in your praise
To decide your deeds like the Gaels of yore
On your face we no longer gaze
In that kingdom of love may your dear soul rest
On the word that we fervently pray
That we`ll all meet above the old friends we love
In Tipperary so far away

The soldiers of Erin bore him high
On their shoulders, they solemnly tread
And many a heart with a tearful sigh
Wept over our patriot dead
In silence they lowered him into the grave
To rest till his reckoning day
Sean Treacy who died, his home to save
In Tipperary so far away

found at a Tripod site. It's all over the www, btw.

The best known song in that thread, Jim, is always known as "Tipperary so far away" and is not what Frank is looking for.

There's another thread called Lyr Add: Tipperary Far Away. It contains lyrics for a couple of different versions of the song, but neither of them contains the lyrics you have quoted.

I wonder can anybody help me find the lyrics of this song.

Tipperary Far Away

Some of the lines go like this

"When I think of Charles Kickham, its no wonder I do mourn
and dream of where his body lies in his native Mullinahone"

"In beautiful Tipperary, Tipperary far away"
"I remember the 1930's when we won the All Ireland crown..."
